Its motor turns a fan that lowers pressure inside the air path; the higher-pressure room air then flows through the cleaning head, carrying loose dirt into a bag or bin. Filters or a separator retain the debris while air passes through the machine and exits through the exhaust.
How does a vacuum cleaner create suction?
An electric motor spins a fan, also called an impeller. The fan transfers energy to air and moves it toward the exhaust. As air is moved out of the intake-side passages, pressure there falls below the surrounding room pressure. Room air then flows toward that lower-pressure region. That flow is what people experience as suction: the machine does not pull dirt with a mysterious force separate from the moving air.
The cleaning head shapes and directs the incoming air. Loose dust and debris become entrained in the stream and travel through the hose or internal ducts toward the collection area. The appliance maintains a pressure difference and airflow; it does not produce a perfect vacuum. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s vacuum-cleaner scoping report describes how fan, airflow, pressure, and the rest of the system work together.
What happens to the dirt and air inside?
The machine must separate dirt from the air before the air continues through the appliance. The exact arrangement varies, but the main stages are intake, transport, separation and filtration, then exhaust.

- LIFT-AWAY FUNCTIONALITY FOR ABOVE-FLOOR CLEANING: Detach the pod to clean stairs, furniture, and more—attach the upholstery or crevice tools to clean dust and debris from baseboards, curtains, blinds, tight spaces and other surfaces.
- PERFECT FOR PET HAIR CLEANUP: Powerful suction and a specialized upholstery tool removes pet hair from carpets, furniture, and stairs with ease—ideal for homes with pets and everyday messes.
- HEPA FILTER WITH ANTI-ALLERGEN COMPLETE SEAL: Advanced HEPA vacuum technology traps dust and allergens* inside the vacuum, helping deliver a cleaner home environment. *Allergens refer to non-living matter.
- SWIVEL STEERING FOR EASY MANEUVERABILITY: Navigate tight spaces, corners, and around furniture with ease using smooth swivel steering for effortless control across floors.
- Intake: The floor head or nozzle guides room air and loose debris into the cleaner.
- Transport: Air carries debris through a hose and internal passages. Bends, narrow passages, blockages and leaks can affect flow.
- Separation: Dirt collects in a disposable bag or removable bin. Some bagless designs use cyclonic separation to remove particles from the moving air.
- Filtration and exhaust: Filters capture particles that remain in the air stream, and air exits through the exhaust. How much dust is retained depends on the filters, seals, their condition and the machine’s design; not every vacuum can be assumed to emit dust-free air.
Samsung’s component overview also illustrates the basic motor, fan, collection and airflow arrangement. In a bagged cleaner, the bag collects debris and can also act as part of the separation system. A bagless cleaner uses a removable container and reusable filter or filters; exact designs vary.
Why do some vacuum cleaners pick up better than others?
Pickup depends on the complete airflow and cleaning system, not just on the motor. The fan and motor must move air through the nozzle, hose, collection stage and filters, each of which can add resistance. The head also has to suit the surface and debris: its opening, seals and brush mechanism influence how effectively it dislodges and captures dirt. Brush agitation can help loosen debris where the surface and head design call for it.

Electrical input wattage tells you how much electrical power a motor uses, not how much dirt the cleaner will remove. The EPA report says input power has minimal correlation with cleaning performance and notes the importance of head design, brush mechanisms, sealing and overall design. It also cautions that an air-power figure is not the same as cleaning efficiency; nozzle design can be especially influential in some comparisons. Compare performance claims only when they use comparable test methods and conditions, rather than treating one number as a universal ranking.
For context, the European Commission reports that domestic vacuum input power in Europe rose from 1,200 W in 1990 to 2,300 W in 2020. Those are historical EU figures, not current product specifications or recommended power levels. The Commission notes that consumers have historically treated input power as a performance proxy, even though higher input power does not always mean better cleaning. European Commission guidance on vacuum cleaners explains this context.

How do the nozzle, hose and filters affect airflow?
The fan operates against the resistance of the entire air path. A blocked hose or dirty filter can restrict the flow; a leak can let air enter through an unintended route. The floor head also matters because it determines how air meets the surface and debris. That is why a strong motor alone cannot guarantee effective pickup: performance depends on how well the components work together.
For people comparing technical claims, ASTM’s catalog description of ASTM F2105-17 lists measures such as suction, airflow, air power, maximum air power and input power in a motor/fan test method. It is a description of a test method, not a consumer ranking, and figures from different methods or test conditions are not necessarily directly comparable. Confirm the applicable standard edition before relying on a claim about current standard status.

What maintenance helps preserve suction?
When a filter or airway becomes blocked, airflow can be impeded and pickup may suffer. The European Commission advises cleaning the appliance according to its instructions and changing or washing filters regularly when required. It also recommends cleaning beneath the brush roll and on attachments. Follow the manual for the exact model: a filter may be washable, replaceable or neither.
- Check and clean the brush area and attachments as directed.
- Inspect accessible hoses and airways for obstructions.
- Wash or replace filters only as the manufacturer instructs.
- For bagged models, use the correct replacement bag for the specific model.
What does the EU energy-label rule mean?
The European Commission’s vacuum-cleaner page says the energy-labelling rules under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 665/2013 have been annulled and products no longer carry an energy label under that scheme. This is an EU-specific statement, not a rule for every market. The former regulation excluded some products, including robot vacuums and handheld or cordless stick vacuums. Regulatory requirements can change, so check the Commission’s current page for the latest EU status.
