Cornerstone Bible Church in Glendora, California, renewed its roof by removing failing asbestos diamond-shaped shingles and installing ATAS International CastleTop metal panels. The replacement preserved the church’s traditional diamond-shingle appearance while adding an aluminum roof system selected for its reported durability, expected longevity and fire-resistance attributes.

ATAS’s September 30, 2020 case study describes the project; the installation account is associated with Dustyn Howard, president of Howard & Sons, Inc. The published account identifies the principal materials and method, but it does not provide the project’s cost, roof area, panel count, installation date, measured performance or project-specific warranty terms.

The dimensions describe individual panels and their stated coverage, not the church’s total roof area. ATAS also lists anodized aluminum, copper and zinc among CastleTop material options and says the product can be used as wall cladding; the church project is identified specifically with aluminum panels.

Why the church needed a new roof

The starting point was failure of the existing asbestos shingles. The case study describes them as diamond-shaped and says they had begun to fail, prompting removal and replacement. It does not publish a condition survey, a failure analysis or a measured remaining service life, so those details should not be inferred.

Replacing an older asbestos-containing roof is a specialized construction decision. A building owner normally needs a jurisdiction-appropriate asbestos survey, a written removal and disposal plan, and contractors qualified for the applicable regulations. The case study confirms that the old shingles were removed, but it does not identify the abatement method, testing laboratory, disposal facility or regulatory approvals.

Why CastleTop was selected

Preserving the diamond-shingle reference

Visual continuity was central to the choice. ATAS says the CastleTop panel shape resembled the church’s original diamond shingles, allowing the replacement roof to retain a familiar scale and pattern rather than introducing a visibly different standing-seam or large-panel appearance.

Durability and expected longevity

The case study reports that the church’s selection reasons included the expected longevity and durability of a metal roof. Those are stated decision factors, not a measured life-span result for this installation. No service-life test, inspection series or performance benchmark for the church roof is published.

Fire resistance as a regional concern

ATAS also identifies fire resistance as a consideration in Southern California. That explains why fire-related characteristics mattered to the project team, but it is not a fire test of the installed assembly. A current project in the region should obtain the product’s applicable fire-classification documentation and confirm that the complete roof assembly, including deck, underlayment, flashings and penetrations, satisfies the governing code.

What the published CastleTop specifications mean

Panel size versus installed coverage

The case study gives both a nominal panel size and a smaller coverage size. The difference reflects the way adjacent panels overlap or interlock in the finished installation. Estimators therefore cannot calculate material quantities by multiplying the nominal panel dimensions alone; they must use the manufacturer’s coverage figure, layout details, waste allowance and the roof’s geometry.

Minimum slope

The published minimum slope is a design boundary, not a recommendation that every roof should be built at that pitch. Before specifying the system, a designer should measure each roof plane, account for valleys and transitions, and verify that the proposed underlayment, drainage details and flashing are approved for the actual slope. A field condition below the manufacturer’s limit requires redesign rather than an assumption that extra sealant will make the system compliant.

Aluminum, texture and finish

The project used .032-inch aluminum panels with an embossed texture and a 70% PVDF paint coating. Aluminum, copper, zinc and anodized aluminum are listed as CastleTop material options, but material choice affects weight, movement, detailing, color development and compatibility with adjacent metals. The published case study does not say that the church evaluated those alternatives.

How the roof was installed

Removal and deck preparation

According to ATAS, the old shingles were removed and the new panels were installed over a solid wood deck. That sequence establishes the reported substrate for this project; it is not a guarantee that every historic building will have a usable deck after tear-off. A contractor should expose representative areas, check for rot or weakened fasteners, and document repairs before closing the assembly.

Contractor and supply chain

ATAS names Howard & Sons, Inc., based in Corona, California, in connection with the removal and installation account. Panels and trims were purchased through RoofLine Supply and Delivery in Burbank, California. These names identify the participants reported for this project; the published material does not establish their current availability, pricing or any partnership program.

Details that still require project documents

The case study does not state which underlayment, ice-and-water protection, ventilation approach, fasteners, valley construction, edge metal or flashing profiles were used. Those components can determine water management and serviceability, so they should be specified in the drawings and confirmed in the closeout package rather than assumed from the panel description.

How the finished roof preserved the church’s character

The two-color layout was part of the visual strategy. Rocky Grey and Charcoal Grey were used together to create a roof pattern, reinforcing the small-panel, diamond-shingle reference. The embossed surface adds another layer of texture that is visible at normal viewing distance and helps the metal read as a shingle-like surface rather than a flat sheet.

ATAS provides historic context for the setting: the church’s natural stone walls were built before the building opened in 1931, and church members reportedly mined stone from mountain quarries above Glendora’s citrus farms and brought it down for construction. That history comes from the manufacturer’s project page, so it should be treated as manufacturer-published context unless separately corroborated. The roof replacement’s visual objective was to complement those established stone walls, not to make the building look newly constructed.

What the project award does—and does not—show

The project placed third in ATAS’s 2019 Project of the Year competition in the commercial roofs category. That result indicates recognition in the manufacturer’s own competition. It is not an independent rating of the roof, a certification of fire performance, a warranty, or evidence of a measured service life.

Using this project as a guide for another metal-shingle roof

Cornerstone Bible Church offers a useful set of documented decision points, but a similar building still needs its own investigation. Use the following checks before selecting a system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Start with the existing appearance

Photograph the roof from the street, courtyard and nearby elevated viewpoints. Record shingle shape, exposure, coursing, ridge treatment and color variation. Ask manufacturers for full-size samples or mock-ups, because a small color chip cannot show how an embossed panel and overlapping courses will read across a historic elevation.

2. Verify the substrate after a controlled opening

Do not assume that a solid-looking roof has a sound deck. Probe representative areas, inspect framing around valleys and penetrations, and write repair allowances into the scope. If asbestos-containing material is present, coordinate the survey and removal plan before ordinary roofing work begins.

3. Measure every roof plane and compare the manufacturer’s limit

Use field measurements rather than an old drawing to establish slope. Check the lowest-pitched areas, dormers, porch connections and drainage paths against the system’s published minimum. Ask for written details for valleys, walls, ridges and changes in plane at the measured conditions.

4. Compare material and finish documentation

Confirm the alloy or base metal, thickness, coating designation, color range, touch-up procedures and compatibility with flashings and gutters. A 70% PVDF coating is a published characteristic of the CastleTop panels described here; it does not by itself establish how a different product or color will perform on another building.

5. Request fire documentation for the complete assembly

Because fire resistance was a stated concern for the Glendora project, obtain current classification reports and installation limitations for the exact roof assembly. Ask the building official or code consultant whether the required rating applies to the panel alone or to the panel, underlayment, deck and supporting construction together.

6. Plan for maintenance and records

Specify who will inspect fasteners, sealants, flashings, gutters and coating damage, and at what intervals. Keep product data, color names, batch information, approved details, photographs of concealed work and the final roof plan. Those records are especially valuable when a historic building changes contractors or maintenance staff.

Questions the case study cannot answer

Readers should not treat the published account as a complete project file. It does not establish the total roof area, number of panels, project cost, installation dates, labor hours, warranty terms applicable to Cornerstone Bible Church, energy savings, leak history or measured fire performance. It also does not include a verbatim statement from a church representative. Trade and association coverage repeat the manufacturer’s principal details rather than supplying an independent project interview.

For a procurement decision, request those missing records directly from the owner, architect, contractor or manufacturer. In particular, ask for approved shop drawings, substrate repair documentation, asbestos-handling records, inspection reports, warranty registration and photographs of completed flashing. Without them, the case study is best used as a documented example of design compatibility and installation approach, not as a guarantee of results on another roof.

Bottom line

Cornerstone Bible Church’s roof renewal combined a historic appearance with a modern metal system: failing asbestos diamond shingles were replaced by CastleTop aluminum panels, and Rocky Grey and Charcoal Grey were arranged to retain a diamond-shingle visual pattern. The reported installation used a solid wood deck and was carried out with Howard & Sons, Inc., with materials supplied through RoofLine Supply and Delivery. The project demonstrates how panel geometry, color and substrate planning can support a sensitive historic renovation, while its award and product specifications should not be mistaken for independent proof of long-term performance.
