Concrete compressive-strength testing measures the maximum axial load a cylindrical specimen can withstand, divided by its loaded cross-sectional area. A molded cylinder is made, cured, capped or ground, centered in a compression machine, and loaded until it fails. A core follows the same compression test, but it must first be drilled from the structure, conditioned, measured, and prepared under the requirements for cores. Because fabrication, curing, moisture, geometry, and end preparation all influence the result, a core value cannot automatically be converted to a cylinder value with one universal factor.

What the test actually measures

ASTM C39/C39M-26 covers compression testing of molded concrete cylinders and drilled cores. The test produces a maximum load at failure. Compressive strength is calculated by dividing that load by the loaded cross-sectional area of the specimen. The complete standard also controls specimen dimensions, loading equipment, alignment, machine performance, failure identification, calculations, and reporting.

The result is a property of the particular specimen and its test history, not an unchanging number that belongs to the concrete mixture alone. ASTM states in section 5.1: “Care must be exercised in the interpretation of the significance of compressive strength determinations by this test method since strength is not a fundamental or intrinsic property of concrete made from given materials.” Variation can arise from specimen size and shape, batching and mixing, sampling and fabrication, curing age, temperature, and moisture condition.

Testing is normally performed for one of three reasons:

  • Investigation of an existing structure: drilled cores provide a direct measurement on concrete removed from a member.
  • Screening or diagnosis: nondestructive methods such as rebound testing estimate strength and generally need an applicable correlation, often established with cores.

Project specifications and the engineer’s evaluation criteria determine which purpose applies and how results are judged.

How a molded concrete cylinder is tested

1. Make and cure the specimen correctly

Field-made cylinders are commonly made and cured under ASTM C31/C31M. Laboratory-made specimens commonly follow ASTM C192/C192M. Sampling, molding, consolidation, identification, curing temperature, curing moisture, and test age must match the governing specification. A cylinder that was poorly consolidated, mislabeled, allowed to dry, or tested at the wrong age can produce a misleading number even when the compression machine is working properly.

2. Inspect and prepare the ends

The two ends must provide suitable, parallel bearing surfaces. Depending on the permitted method, the laboratory may use a bonded cap, an unbonded cap system, or another preparation allowed by the applicable standard. End preparation is not cosmetic: a surface that is out of plane, not perpendicular to the axis, damaged, or inadequately seated can introduce bending or concentrate load on one edge.

Current requirements for bonded caps and unbonded systems are associated with ASTM C617/C617M and ASTM C1231/C1231M. The laboratory must use the edition and options required by the contract, specification, or governing code.

3. Verify the machine and center the cylinder

Before loading, trained personnel verify that the compression-testing machine is within its calibration and accuracy requirements and that the bearing blocks are clean and properly aligned. The cylinder is placed upright and centered between the platens so the load is applied axially. Eccentric placement can create bending and change the apparent strength.

4. Load continuously to rupture

The machine applies compressive load under the controls and loading rate specified by ASTM C39/C39M. The operator watches the specimen and machine, records the maximum load, and identifies the observed break type. Do not substitute an improvised loading rate or stop and restart the test unless the governing procedure permits it.

5. Calculate and report

Strength is calculated from the recorded maximum load and the measured loaded area. The report normally identifies the specimen, dimensions, age, maximum load, calculated strength, end-preparation method, and failure characteristics, together with any other information required by the project method. The report should preserve enough detail for an engineer to determine whether the specimen and test were valid.

How a drilled concrete core is tested

1. Define the question before drilling

For an existing structure, ACI 437R-19 describes core removal and testing as the direct measurement route for compressive strength. Before sampling, the owner, engineer, testing agency, and contractor should agree on the evaluation criteria, the locations to be sampled, the number of cores, the required conditioning, and how the results will be used. A single core is not a complete structural evaluation.

Core locations must also be selected to avoid reinforcement, embedded services, edges, and areas that cannot safely be drilled. The engineer should document the member, orientation, elevation, and any visible defects so the laboratory can interpret an unexpected result.

2. Extract, identify, and transport the core

A diamond drill removes a cylindrical piece from the in-place member. Record its location, orientation, diameter, length, mass when required, and visible features such as cracking, voids, honeycombing, or reinforcement. Keeping the core identified and protected during transport prevents a sound test from becoming an uncertain one.

Dimensions and mass can be used to estimate density and investigate an anomalous result. A core containing a bar, a large void, a construction joint, or severe damage may require engineering disposition rather than routine acceptance as representative concrete.

3. Condition the core under ASTM C42/C42M

Moisture condition has a direct effect on measured strength. Unless the project specifies otherwise, ACI 437R-19 points to the default conditioning procedure in ASTM C42/C42M, intended to preserve in-place moisture and reduce moisture gradients. Excessive gradients can reduce measured compressive strength.

The correct conditioning plan depends on the purpose of the evaluation. A building investigation may call for treatment that better represents the structure’s in-place condition. A different timing requirement can apply when cores are taken after low standard-cured cylinder results during construction. The current ASTM edition, project documents, and governing code must be checked before setting dates or conditioning details.

4. Measure geometry and evaluate the length-to-diameter ratio

Measure the core diameter and length after the applicable preparation. ACI 437R-19 states that approximate ASTM C42/C42M correction factors should be applied when the core length-to-diameter ratio is below 1.75, to obtain a ratio-2 strength basis. These factors are approximate and require engineering judgment; they are not a substitute for selecting an appropriate specimen or for reporting the uncorrected measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Geometry affects stress distribution. Shorter cores can show a different apparent strength than specimens with a length-to-diameter ratio near two, which is why the ratio and any correction must appear in the test record.

5. Prepare the ends

Core ends often need sawing, grinding, or a permitted capping system before loading. ACI 437R-19 discusses limitations of bonded and unbonded caps, notes that saw cutting may be necessary, and calls for verification of flatness when ends are ground. Exact flatness, perpendicularity, cap, and surface requirements come from the current ASTM C42/C42M, C39/C39M, C617/C617M, and C1231/C1231M provisions that apply to the job.

6. Load the prepared core under C39

Once the core has been sampled, conditioned, measured, and prepared under C42, the compression portion is performed under ASTM C39/C39M. The operator centers the specimen, confirms alignment, loads it to failure, records the maximum load, identifies the break, and calculates strength from load and area.

Can a core test be compared directly with a cylinder test?

Not without qualification. Both tests use axial compression, but the specimens may differ in age, moisture, temperature history, orientation, geometry, curing, and end preparation. ACI 437R-19 notes that core strengths may be lower or higher than standard-cured cylinder strengths.

The guidance recounts historical work in which well-cured slab cores were approximately 85 percent of companion standard-cured cylinder strength. That figure is a historical observation, not a general conversion rule. ACI expressly discourages dividing every core result by 0.85. The relationship changes with concrete age, strength level, curing moisture, temperature history, and the condition of the structure.

Comparison point Molded cylinder Drilled core

What it represents Concrete placed and cured under the specified cylinder regime Concrete at a particular location and condition in the structure
Variables requiring attention Sampling, consolidation, curing, age, dimensions, caps, alignment Location, orientation, reinforcement, damage, moisture, length-to-diameter ratio, ends, age
Interpretation Compare with the project’s acceptance criteria Evaluate with the engineer’s structural criteria and measured variation; do not apply a blanket conversion

A meaningful comparison requires specimens with known histories and a stated evaluation method. The engineer may use the average of several cores, account for variation, and combine direct core results with appropriately correlated in-place methods.

How many cores are needed?

There is no single number that is valid for every structure. ACI 437R-19 says sampling should reflect the expected uniformity of the concrete and the confidence desired in the average. More variable concrete or a higher-consequence decision generally requires a sampling plan capable of characterizing that variation.

  • Define the acceptance or evaluation criterion before drilling.
  • Divide the structure into logical regions based on placement history, exposure, member type, or suspected defects.
  • Select locations that answer the engineering question rather than simply producing convenient samples.
  • Use the average of the relevant cores when the governing procedure calls for an average; do not let one unusually low or high core stand alone.
  • Investigate outliers for damage, reinforcement, voids, moisture problems, geometry, or preparation errors before treating them as representative.

What can make a result unexpectedly high or low?

Moisture and conditioning

Drying or steep moisture gradients can change the measured strength of a core. Conditioning that does not match the governing method can make comparisons invalid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Geometry

A length-to-diameter ratio below 1.75 requires attention to the approximate correction factors identified by ACI 437R-19 and ASTM C42/C42M. Diameter, damaged edges, and irregular shape also affect the loaded area and stress distribution.

End preparation

Nonparallel or nonflat ends can cause eccentric loading. Poorly seated caps, excessive grinding, or a damaged bearing surface can produce a premature break.

Concrete history

Age, curing moisture, temperature history, placement quality, and the strength level itself influence whether a core is above or below a companion cylinder result.

Sampling location

A core through a void, crack, joint, reinforcement bar, or locally deteriorated zone may be valid evidence of that location but not representative of the entire placement. The report should identify such features.

Safety, equipment, and personnel requirements

Compression failure can be sudden. ASTM C39/C39M warns that fragments may be ejected and recommends fragment containment around the test setup. Operators should use the laboratory’s guarding, exclusion-zone, and personal-protection procedures and should never lean over an actively loaded specimen.

The machine must be suitable for the specimen and maintained within required calibration and accuracy limits. ACI’s technician task analysis includes machine calibration, centering, alignment, load application, break-type identification, calculation, and reporting. These are competence tasks, not optional paperwork.

ASTM’s listing states that personnel performing cylinder acceptance testing must meet ASTM C1077 laboratory-technician requirements, including demonstrated performance evaluated by an independent examiner. Certification policies can change; the laboratory should verify the current requirements and document technician qualifications.

  • Specimen source: field-made cylinder, laboratory-made cylinder, or drilled core.
  • Dates of sampling, casting or extraction, conditioning, and testing; concrete age at test.
  • Measured diameter, length, length-to-diameter ratio, and mass or density information when obtained.
  • Curing or moisture-conditioning history and any deviations.
  • End-preparation method, cap type, and relevant surface observations.
  • Machine identification, calibration status, maximum load, calculated area, and compressive strength.
  • Failure type, reinforcement or defects encountered, and comments on specimen validity.
  • The standard editions and project criteria used for acceptance or interpretation.

Report corrected and uncorrected core values separately when a correction is applied, and state the reason and basis for the correction.

When to use a testing laboratory or structural engineer

Use a qualified concrete-testing laboratory for acceptance cylinders, core extraction coordination, specimen preparation, machine operation, and documented reporting. In an existing building, involve a structural engineer before drilling or interpreting results. The engineer determines whether the sampling plan, number of cores, conditioning, correction, and acceptance criteria answer the structural question. A compression number by itself does not establish the safety of a member or building.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a concrete cylinder break test measure?

It measures the maximum axial compressive load carried by the cylinder and divides that load by the loaded cross-sectional area to report compressive strength.

How do you test a concrete core?

Extract and identify the core, condition and prepare it under ASTM C42/C42M, measure its geometry, prepare suitable ends, then center and load it to failure under ASTM C39/C39M.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 85 percent a required core-to-cylinder conversion?

No. ACI 437R-19 recounts an approximately 85 percent historical comparison for well-cured slab cores, but explicitly does not endorse 0.85 as a universal conversion.

Who should interpret low core results?

The project’s structural engineer should interpret them using the agreed criteria, the core average and variation, specimen condition, and the applicable code or specification.
