Hammer Drill vs. Regular Drill for Masonry: Which Should You Use?

A hammer drill is usually better suited to masonry, but a regular drill can handle some holes with the right bit. Here’s how to choose safely and match the tool to the job.

For most masonry drilling, choose a hammer drill: it turns the bit while adding a forward hammering action that helps it work through masonry. A regular drill can also make masonry holes with a suitable masonry bit, so hammer action is not essential for every small, occasional job. The right choice depends on the material, hole and workload.

What is the difference between a regular drill and a hammer drill?

A regular drill rotates the bit. A hammer drill rotates it while adding a forward percussion action. DEWALT Support describes this distinction in its hammer drill guidance, updated 24 November 2025. That extra action helps the bit work through masonry, which resists ordinary rotary drilling.

DEWALT says hammer action can make masonry drilling faster and more accurate, while reducing wear on the drill. Those are manufacturer-stated benefits, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee for every tool, bit, or masonry type. No universal speed advantage is established.

Can a regular drill drill into masonry?

Yes. DEWALT Support says masonry drilling is possible without hammer action when using masonry bits in its guidance on drilling masonry without hammering, updated 22 December 2020. For a small, occasional hole, a regular drill may be sufficient, depending on the drill, bit, masonry, and task. The source does not establish a universal limit for hole size, depth, or quantity.

Deshuo 1" SDS-Plus Lightweight Rotary Hammer Drill for Concrete/Masonry
  • ATTENTION: This rotary hammer can only be used with SDS Plus (SDS +) bits--NOT with regular drills, SDS Max, or other types of bits(PLEASE CHECK BEFORE ORDERING)
  • Efficient Use: The lightweight rotary hammer weighs only 7.19 lbs. and is ideal for overhead or downward drilling applications. The SDS-Plus bit system offers tool-less bit changes and maximum impact energy transfer. Ideal for DIY enthusiasts, not suitable for heavy-duty demolition work
  • Power: 9 AMP motor delivers 0-1,100 RPM and 0-5,300 BPM, 2.21 ft.lbs.(3 Joules) of impact energy for fast drilling in concrete, cement, brick, masonry and tile removal
  • 4 Modes: "Rotary Hammer" mode is ideal for quickly drilling in concrete. "Rotary Only" mode is suitable for light drilling in masonry or brick work. "Hammer Only" mode is perfect for tile removal. "Chisel position Adjustment" mode allows free adjustment of the chisel angle
  • Convenient Use: Equipped with forward and reverse buttons for easy removal of tightened bits. Variable speed trigger with locking button to accurately start the drill and reduce fatigue

For repeated or more demanding masonry work, hammer action is generally the more suitable option. Consider the material, hole diameter and depth, and number of holes, then check the tool’s rated capacity and intended applications rather than relying on a fixed upgrade threshold.

Choose a compatible bit before drilling

For hammer drilling masonry, use a sharp carbide-tipped masonry bit rated for percussion drilling, as specified in the DEWALT Canada instruction manual. Confirm that the bit’s shank and size fit your drill. A conventional chuck and an SDS-plus rotary hammer use different bit interfaces; a masonry bit is not automatically compatible with every tool.

Keep hammer action off for tile

Do not use hammer action when drilling through tile. DEWALT explicitly warns against hammering through tiles in its masonry drilling guidance. Use the appropriate tile-drilling method and bit, and follow the tool and bit manufacturers’ instructions.

When to consider an SDS-plus rotary hammer

An SDS-plus rotary hammer is a separate option for more demanding concrete or masonry drilling. For example, Bosch identifies its GBH 2-26 as intended for drilling and chiselling in concrete and masonry. That example does not establish a universal point at which you should upgrade. Compare the job with the specific tool’s rated capacities and intended applications, and check that your bits match its SDS-plus interface.
