A coping saw handles intricate curves in thin stock; a circular saw is suited to portable straight cuts; and a miter saw makes controlled crosscuts and angles. Here are ten common saw types and where each fits—there is no single official list of exactly ten.
How to choose the right saw
Start by describing the cut, not by picking a tool from a list. A straight rip cut follows the grain; a crosscut goes across it. Other common jobs include bevels, angles, curves, interior cutouts, pipe cuts, and rough demolition. Each places different demands on the blade, tool capacity, and operator. Hilti’s power saw buying guide maps saw types to these different cuts.
- Material and thickness: Match the blade to the workpiece and make sure the saw can handle its thickness and dimensions.
- Finish and accuracy: A fine-toothed blade generally cuts more slowly and leaves a finer finish; a lower tooth count generally favors faster, rougher cuts. Blade geometry and material also matter, so tooth count alone does not guarantee a particular result.
- Capacity and access: Consider the width or depth the tool can cut, whether the workpiece can be brought to a stationary saw, and whether the blade can reach the cut.
- Blade compatibility: Check the blade type and replacement fit for the specific saw and material.
Ten common saw types and their uses
1. Hacksaw
A hacksaw is a hand tool for small cuts in metal pipe, rods, brackets, and conduit. With a suitable blade, it can also cut some wood and plastic. Its compact frame and blade are useful for modest jobs, but make it a poor choice for large metal workpieces. Use a blade intended for the material. Toolstation’s saw buying guide covers common hacksaw uses.
2. Jigsaw
A jigsaw’s reciprocating blade makes it useful for curves, patterns, and cutouts; many models can also make suitable straight or bevel cuts. The blade can flex, making it harder to keep a very straight, precise line than with a saw designed for guided straight cuts. Select a blade for the material and follow the tool manual. OSHA describes handheld jigsaws in its handheld saw guidance.

3. Miter saw
A miter saw is built for controlled crosscuts and angled cuts, often in trim and other stock that fits the saw. A sliding feature can increase the width of stock the saw can cut; a bevel feature lets the blade tilt to make bevel cuts. Capacity varies by saw, so check the manufacturer’s specifications for the cut you need. A miter saw is a specialized option, not a substitute for every kind of saw.
4. Coping saw
A coping saw has a thin blade held in a U-shaped frame and cuts on the pull stroke. Its fine blade is suited to intricate profiles, trim coping, and other detailed work in relatively thin stock. To make an interior cut, remove the blade, pass it through a starter hole, and reattach it to the frame. This is slower than using a larger saw, and the cited Toolstation guide puts its practical limit at about one inch of stock.

5. Circular saw
A circular saw is a portable power tool for straight cuts. Depending on the blade and setup, it can make rip or crosscuts. It is useful when a workpiece is too large or awkward to bring to a stationary saw, but the cut depends on proper setup and control. Choose a blade suited to the material, use the guards as designed, and account for kickback, dust, and noise.
6. Reciprocating saw
A reciprocating saw is useful for rough cuts and demolition, particularly where access is awkward or the work involves varied materials. Fit a blade intended for the material. Its aggressive action can make the tool harder to control and can cause kickback; Toolstation advises attention to control and blade selection.

7. Band saw
A band saw guides work through a continuous blade and can handle thick stock and irregular shapes. Many models are chosen for speed or shape cutting rather than a fine finish or precise miter. Capacity and finish depend on the particular machine and blade, so check the manufacturer’s specifications for the workpiece.
8. Table saw
A table saw is a stationary workshop tool for rip and crosscuts in wood, including cuts with or across the grain. Its fixed table supports the workpiece, but the blade and work method create serious hazards, including kickback. Use the machine’s guards and follow its manual and applicable workplace requirements; training matters.

9. Bow saw
A bow saw is a hand saw for branches and logs. It is a practical choice for rough outdoor cuts, not for a neat finish on trim or furniture parts.
10. Scroll saw
A scroll saw is a bench-based tool for intricate cuts in thinner material, including interior shapes. For an inside cut, thread the blade through a starter hole before reconnecting it. Its precision comes with limited stock thickness; consult the machine’s specifications before choosing it for a particular piece.

Use power saws with safeguards in place
Power saws can cause severe injuries when users are inexperienced or improperly trained, or when blades are not properly guarded. OSHA’s Machine Guarding—Saws eTool states: “The easiest way to avoid injury is to use properly guarded saws and appropriate safety equipment.”
- Use a blade suited to the material and keep it sharp.
- Keep guards in place and working as the manufacturer intended; do not defeat or remove them for a cut.
- Direct the blade away from nearby people and aisles, and wear appropriate eye and face protection.
- Read the tool manual, secure and support the workpiece as directed, and follow applicable workplace safety requirements.
For U.S. construction work, OSHA’s cited rule requires portable circular saws to have upper and retractable lower guards. That specific requirement should not be treated as a rule for every saw or every jurisdiction; check the requirements that apply to your workplace and location.
