To grow plants successfully, start by matching a plant to its setting—indoors, in a container or in a garden bed—and the light, space and local conditions you can provide. Then use the plant’s specific instructions to guide watering, growing medium and timing. There is no single schedule or potting mix that suits every plant.

Choose a setting and a plant that fit

Decide where the plant will grow and what you want from it: foliage, flowers, herbs or a garden harvest. Check how much light the spot gets, how much room the mature plant will need and whether you can meet its care needs. For outdoor gardens, the University of New Hampshire Extension recommends planning around the site and considering whether an in-ground bed or raised bed makes sense; soil testing can help identify whether amendments are needed. See UNH Extension’s Getting Started With Gardening.

Choose varieties suited to your area, and use local extension guidance for planting dates and regional recommendations. A plant label or seed packet can help with species-specific needs, but local timing matters because climate and season vary.

Match light to the plant

Light needs differ by species. Place houseplants according to their requirements and the conditions near your windows; Texas A&M AgriLife says most houseplants do best in bright, indirect light near a window, while stressing that needs vary. That is a starting point, not a rule for every plant. Consult Texas A&M AgriLife’s Houseplants 101 and the Royal Horticultural Society’s houseplant guidance for care details.

Seedlings need bright light after they emerge. If a bright south-facing window is unavailable, UNH Extension describes fluorescent shop lights as one option for seed starting. Its placement and timing advice applies to that setup; it should not be treated as a universal specification for every grow light or plant. See UNH Extension’s Starting Plants From Seed.

Water according to the growing conditions

Do not rely on a fixed watering calendar. Check the growing medium first: Texas A&M AgriLife recommends checking moisture about 1 to 2 inches below the surface before watering indoor plants. The right interval still depends on the species, pot, medium and conditions. For container houseplants, Virginia Cooperative Extension’s watering guidance explains that fine or fibrous growing media tend to retain more water and less air, while coarser ingredients drain more readily.

PLANTMEW Lavender Seeds for Planting, English Lavender Seeds Indoor & Outdoor, 7000+ Heirloom Seeds, High Germination, Easy to Grow, Fragrant Flowers, Culinary & Crafts (0.7 oz)
  • 💧 Cold Stratification Seed Prep: Lavender seeds germinate best after 2-4 weeks of cold stratification. Place seeds in a moist paper towel or sand inside a sealed bag and refrigerate before planting, then sow seeds lightly covered with soil.
  • 🌱 English Lavender Heirloom Seeds – High-quality seeds ideal for garden borders, herb gardens, and long-term planting.
  • 🏡 Indoor & Outdoor Growing – Perfect for pots, windowsills, patios, balcony planters, and garden beds.

For seeds, keep the starting medium evenly moist during germination without leaving it flooded or letting it dry out. Water gently, especially for small seeds, so they are not displaced. The USDA-hosted Grow Seedlings Indoors guide also advises checking soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule. Its publication is older, so consult local extension guidance for current regional timing.

Select a suitable growing medium and container

Use a medium appropriate for the plant and container rather than assuming one potting mix fits everything. Ingredients and particle sizes affect both drainage and how much water and air reach roots. The RHS describes commercially produced peat-free potting composts made from combinations of ingredients such as loam, composted bark, coir and sand. Choose according to the plant’s needs and follow reliable, species-specific guidance; see RHS guidance on peat-free compost.

150 Coleus Seeds - Rainbow Mix, Annual & Easy-Grow, Indoor & Outdoor Use, Compact Plants with Multi-Colored Foliage, Ideal for Gardens, Containers & Shaded Areas
  • Highly ornamental with rainbow mix foliage, the leaves have ruffled or textured surfaces. When planted outdoors, the leaves will show richer color layers as they mature, adding visual highlights to the space.
  • Annual and easy-to-grow variety with loose germination conditions: it germinates in 10-14 days when soil temperature reaches 70-75°F. Just cover with a thin layer of soil when sowing, no complicated operations required, suitable for beginners.
  • Compact plant type (mature height 12-30 inches) suitable for multiple scenarios: it can be potted in indoor places with scattered light, or planted in outdoor shaded flower beds and containers. No much vertical space needed, suitable for small gardens or balconies.
  • Low-maintenance and easy to care for: just keep the soil moist but not waterlogged daily. Regular pinching of growing tips promotes full plant shape, and removing flower spikes can extend the bright period of leaves, no tedious care needed throughout the growing season.
  • Strong adaptability: it is suitable for both edging decoration in garden borders and single potted decoration on windowsills or desks. It can still maintain bright leaf colors in partially shaded environments.

When growing in a pot, use a container suited to the plant and its growing medium. A seed-starting tray or kit can make sowing indoors easier, but it is a convenience rather than a requirement; clean, appropriate containers work too. Follow the seed packet for sowing depth and timing.

Start plants from seed

Many annuals, biennials and herbaceous perennials can be grown from seed. Choose reliable seed sources and varieties adapted to your area, then use the packet for sowing depth and local planting timing. UNH Extension’s seed-starting guide covers sowing and seedling care.

Try herbs for a manageable first crop

Herbs can be grown indoors or outdoors in containers or garden beds, provided their light and drainage needs are met. In a July 31, 2026 article, the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture says most common culinary herbs need at least six hours of full sun. That recommendation applies to those common culinary herbs, not every herb or growing environment. The article quotes Krista Quinn, Faulkner County Extension horticulture agent: “I think herbs are some of the best plants for beginner gardeners to try growing,” because “You’re only trying to grow leaves and not a fruit or vegetable, which makes it a little easier, and they don’t usually need a lot of fussy care.” Read the University of Arkansas article on growing indoor and outdoor herb gardens.

  • Inspect moisture below the surface before watering, especially in pots.
  • Use a growing medium suited to the plant and container.
  • For seeds and seedlings, follow packet directions and adjust timing to local conditions.
  • Use plant-specific advice to decide when feeding or repotting is appropriate. The RHS covers these topics alongside watering, humidity and propagation in its houseplant guidance.
