A gravel driveway holds up when its base, drainage, and aggregate suit the soil, slope, and traffic—not because it uses a particular stone color or fabric. The four options below address different needs: ordinary load support, weak subgrade, repeated loading, and runoff management. They can be combined, but none is maintenance-free.
Before choosing a design, identify where water comes from, how it will leave the driveway, and what vehicles will use it. FHWA describes aggregate base layers as part of the load-bearing and drainage structure, while U.S. Forest Service guidance emphasizes that surface defects can reflect problems in the underlying base. FHWA’s granular base guidance and the Forest Service’s low-volume-road guidance offer useful background.
Compare the Four Designs
| Design | Primary problem addressed | Good fit | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crowned, compacted crushed aggregate | Ordinary load support and shedding rain | Firm, well-drained ground and routine household traffic | Soft subgrade or trapped water can cause failure |
| Geotextile-separated aggregate | Soil mixing with aggregate over weak or fine soil | Soft, wet, or fine-grained subgrade | Fabric does not replace drainage or sufficient aggregate |
| Geogrid-reinforced aggregate | Aggregate restraint and rut risk under repeated loading | Weak or variable ground and heavier or repeated traffic | Grid and aggregate need a project-specific design |
| Permeable grid or paver with aggregate reservoir | Runoff storage and infiltration through the surface | Suitable low-speed, low-volume areas with sediment control | Clogging, grades, and underdrain needs must be addressed |
This table is a selection guide, not a substitute for a driveway cross-section designed for local soil, runoff, grade, traffic, frost conditions, and requirements.
Plan the Base and Drainage First
Strip organic material and prepare the subgrade; address soft spots before covering them. Use durable, well-graded crushed aggregate for load-bearing layers. Aggregate names and specifications vary by region, so ask a local supplier or contractor for appropriate crushed road-base and surface materials. Place and compact the aggregate in controlled lifts; the required depth and lift thickness depend on the site and its use.

Shape the surface to move water off the driving line, and route it to a stable, permitted outlet. Depending on the site, that may involve a crown or cross slope, ditches, swales, grade dips, or culverts. Treat drainage features as design items: capacity and outlet protection depend on local conditions. The USDA NRCS Access Road guidance discusses crowns, drainage, and stable outlets.
Design 1: Crowned, Compacted Crushed Aggregate
This is the straightforward choice for a firm, well-drained subgrade and ordinary passenger-vehicle traffic. A compacted, well-graded crushed aggregate structure supports vehicle loads; a crown or cross slope sheds rain. Use a durable crushed material suited to the local road-base and surface specifications rather than assuming one stone label works everywhere. The FHWA granular base guidance explains why gradation, particle shape, durability, drainage, and compaction matter.
Angular crushed aggregate interlocks more effectively than rounded gravel. Oregon State University Extension notes that weak subgrade can allow overlying rock to sink under traffic. If stone keeps disappearing into the soil, inspect the subgrade and drainage instead of repeatedly adding surface stone. Oregon State University Extension discusses this practical distinction.
Best for
Homes with competent, well-drained ground, routine household vehicles, and owners prepared to inspect, regrade, or replenish the surface as needed.

A fresh surface layer will not correct a wet, soft base. If the soil is contaminating the aggregate or rutting persists, assess the site for drainage changes or a separation or reinforcement layer.
Design 2: Geotextile-Separated Aggregate
A road-stabilization geotextile can separate aggregate from fine, weak, or wet native soil that would otherwise mix into the stone. Install it at the prepared subgrade and aggregate interface, as specified for the project. NRCS guidance describes using road-stabilization geotextile beneath a surface treatment where weak-bearing soils require separation. See the NRCS Access Road standard portal.

Separation fabric is not a cure for poor drainage, a substitute for removing organic material, or permission to skimp on aggregate and compaction. It is also not interchangeable with geogrid: the two products have different engineering roles. Choose a road-stabilization product for its stated function rather than relying on a generic “weed barrier” description.
Best for
Soft, fine-grained, wet, or otherwise weak subgrade where soil and stone are likely to mix.
Watch out for
Fabric cannot make standing water or uncontrolled runoff harmless. Correct the water problem and prepare the subgrade before installation.
Design 3: Geogrid-Reinforced Aggregate
Geogrid can reinforce an aggregate base where weak or variable ground, repeated loading, or persistent rutting makes aggregate restraint important. It is a design component, not a magic layer. Grid selection, compatible aggregate, installation, and performance criteria should reflect the subgrade and expected traffic; do not assume it guarantees a particular reduction in stone depth.
Government specifications and a five-year field evaluation of geogrid-reinforced low-volume unpaved roads support treating geogrid as a legitimate engineering option, not a cosmetic add-on. They do not provide a universal residential-driveway warranty. See the Caltrans/ROSA P performance specification and the five-year field evaluation.
Best for
Driveways with repeated loading, weak or variable ground, delivery traffic, or rutting that persists after basic drainage and aggregate work.

Watch out for
Heavy trucks, very soft ground, deep recurring ruts, fill, or major drainage work call for an experienced road contractor or a local civil or geotechnical professional. A retail grid choice alone is not a site design.
Design 4: Permeable Grid or Paver With an Aggregate Reservoir
Permeable grid or paver systems let water pass through the surface into an underlying gravel reservoir, then into soil or an underdrain. They may suit low-speed, low-volume driveway areas where reducing runoff is a goal and the site has a designed infiltration or underdrain path. EPA identifies plastic grid pavers as one permeable pavement surface type and describes the role of underlying soil and gravel layers. See EPA’s permeable pavement overview.
Permeable systems need sediment management, inspection, and cleaning. Sediment can clog surface voids and reduce performance; uphill sediment sources and unmanaged runoff work against the design. On sloping sites, the subbase must be managed so water storage is not lost down the slope. EPA’s Green Streets Handbook discusses use and maintenance limitations.
Best for
Suitable low-speed, low-volume areas where runoff management is important and sediment can be controlled.
Watch out for
Do not assume permeable paving suits every slope or traffic level, never clogs, or needs no upkeep. Site conditions may require an underdrain and local review.

- Ruts or stone disappearing: inspect drainage and subgrade. Adding surface rock alone may fail if native soil is weak.
- Water running down wheel tracks: restore the crown or cross slope and check where runoff enters and exits.
- Fine soil appearing in the aggregate: assess subgrade contamination and whether a separation layer is appropriate.
- Permeable surface ponding: remove sediment or debris and inspect the drainage path; clogged voids reduce performance.
- Culvert, ditch, or outlet erosion: seek local drainage guidance on condition-appropriate capacity and stable outlets.
Permits and Site Safety
A driveway connection to a public road, drainage crossing, shoreland or floodplain work, or significant grading may need local approval. Before ordering materials, check with local road or public-works, stormwater, and utility authorities. NRCS access-road materials note that local regulations can require permits for highway access and that drainage structures need sound design. See the NRCS Access Road 560 guidance.
Keep road sight lines clear and route runoff to a stable, permitted outlet. Do not discharge water where it can erode the driveway, damage neighboring property, or create a road hazard.

Which gravel driveway design should I choose?
Match the design to the site. Compacted crushed aggregate suits firm, well-drained ground; geotextile separation addresses soil mixing; geogrid can help with reinforcement under repeated loading; and permeable systems may suit low-speed, low-volume sites designed for infiltration or an underdrain.
Does geotextile fabric fix a muddy driveway?
No. Road-stabilization geotextile can separate aggregate from weak or fine soil, but it does not replace drainage, subgrade preparation, adequate aggregate, or compaction.
Is geogrid the same as driveway fabric?
No. Geotextile is used for separation at the soil-aggregate interface; geogrid is an aggregate-reinforcement component. They have different engineering roles and should not be substituted based on a product label alone.
Can a permeable gravel grid work on any driveway?
No. Permeable grid or paver systems need suitable grades, a designed infiltration or underdrain path, and sediment management. They are generally suited to low-speed, low-volume applications, not every driveway condition.

What should I do if gravel keeps washing out?
Find and correct the water route before adding more stone. Check the surface profile, where runoff enters and leaves, and whether ditches, grade dips, culverts, or outlet protection are needed. Seek local drainage guidance for crossings and concentrated flows.
