Google’s unreleased Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Outdoor, and wired Nest Doorbell were reportedly spotted at Home Depot on September 8–9, 2025—before Google officially announced them. The products appeared to be stocked behind a locked mesh display, but that did not mean shoppers could legally purchase them early. Google later confirmed the lineup, pricing, and an October 1, 2025 launch.
What appeared at Home Depot?
Reports described three boxed Google security products:

- Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen)
- Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen)
- Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen)
The packaging highlighted 2K video and carried a “with Gemini” badge. The hardware designs looked broadly similar to earlier Nest products, so the more significant changes were the resolution upgrade, Google Home integration, and Gemini-powered software.
The initial sighting was reported by Android Authority and Android Headlines, based on a shopper’s retail discovery. The products appeared to be behind a locked display rather than openly available for purchase. Android Authority reported on the Home Depot sighting, while Android Headlines described the reported prices and attempted purchase.

- Meet the wired Nest Doorbell; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what’s at your door and and what to do next (Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- No need to recharge or replace batteries; the Nest Doorbell keeps you plugged into home, day and night
- The Nest Doorbell keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Person with flowers”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, the Nest Doorbell’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, see in the dark with night vision, and see the bigger picture with an expanded 166° field of view[1]
Could customers buy them before launch?
There was no reliable evidence that ordinary shoppers could buy the devices before October 1, 2025. The sighting showed that retail inventory or packaging had reached at least one store, but it did not establish that the products were enabled for checkout.
One reported shopper said Home Depot refused to sell the products before launch. That account should be treated as a report about an individual attempted purchase, not as confirmation of a universal retailer policy.

| Question | What the evidence showed |
|---|---|
| Were products reportedly seen in a store? | Yes, at a Home Depot location. |
| Did retail packaging or inventory appear to exist? | Apparently. |
| Could shoppers reliably check out? | Unclear, with at least one reported refusal. |
| Was this an authorized early release? | No evidence established that it was. |
In other words, the headline was accurate as a retail-leak story, but “on store shelves” should not be read as “officially released early.” Retailers often receive inventory before a permitted sale date.
Reported prices matched Google’s later launch pricing
The early retail labels reportedly showed the following amounts:
| Product | Reported Home Depot price | Official launch price |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam Indoor, wired, 3rd gen | $99.99 | $99.99 |
| Nest Cam Outdoor, wired, 2nd gen | $149.99 | $149.99 |
| Nest Doorbell, wired, 3rd gen | $179.99 | $179.99 |
The prices turned out to match Google’s official launch pricing. However, before the announcement, retail labels could still have been placeholders or associated with previous-generation inventory. The prelaunch report also contained uncertainty around the doorbell’s generation labeling, so Google’s later announcement is the authoritative source for the final product names.
Google officially announced the lineup on October 1, 2025
Google announced all three products on October 1, 2025, stating that they would be available through the Google Store and major retailers starting that day. The company confirmed 2K HDR video across the new wired lineup and positioned the products as part of a broader Google Home and Gemini strategy.
Google announced the two cameras for the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The wired Nest Doorbell was announced for the United States and Canada.
Hardware availability and Gemini feature availability were not identical. Google said Gemini for Home features would initially reach the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia, with other regions expected to receive them in early 2026. Country, plan, device, and software-rollout restrictions can affect which features are available.

What is new in the Nest cameras and doorbell?
2K HDR video
All three devices support 2K HDR video. Google’s Outdoor specifications list a resolution of up to 2560×1440, frame rates of up to 30 frames per second, HDR, HDR night vision, 6× digital zoom, and H.264 and H.265 encoding.
The higher resolution should provide more image detail than older 1080p Nest cameras, especially when digitally enlarging part of a frame. It does not, by itself, prove better real-world night footage, motion handling, latency, or reliability. Those factors require independent testing.
Wider views and outdoor protection
The Indoor and Outdoor camera specifications list a 152-degree diagonal field of view. Google also describes improved low-light performance and wider views as part of the new lineup.
The Outdoor camera and wired doorbell have IP65 protection ratings. They are designed for outdoor installation, but they still require appropriate mounting, cable routing, and a suitable wired power connection. They are not battery-operated versions of the products.
Google Home rather than the legacy Nest workflow
The new Indoor camera requires the Google Home app and a Google Account. Google’s product information says it cannot be set up or managed through the legacy Nest app or home.nest.com.

The camera may fit naturally into a Google Home household, but people who rely on the older Nest app or web interface should treat the app requirement as a compatibility decision—not a minor setup detail.
The new wired products also require convenient power. They are a poor fit for renters, remote outbuildings without suitable wiring, or installations where drilling and cable routing are not practical.

What “with Gemini” means
Gemini is primarily a software and service layer, not a promise that every camera feature is stored or processed locally on the device. Google describes Gemini for Home features including:
- More descriptive notifications that can explain an action instead of simply reporting motion.
- AI-generated descriptions of camera events.
- Searchable video history through Ask Home.
- Home Brief summaries of activity across the home.
- Zoomed-in alert previews.
These features are more useful than a basic motion alert when a homeowner wants to understand what happened without reviewing every clip. They also create an ongoing dependence on Google’s app, cloud services, account system, and feature availability by region.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that the Gemini badge means every capability is free with the camera. Basic camera operation and limited event previews are separate from longer history and the more advanced AI tools.
Google Home Premium changes the cost calculation
Google Home Premium replaced Nest Aware as Google’s newer whole-home subscription offering. The announced prices were:
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price | Advertised camera benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10 | $100 | 30 days of event-based video history, intelligent alerts, whole-home history, and automation assistance. |
| Advanced | $20 | $200 | 60 days of event history, 10 days of continuous video history, descriptive notifications, video-history search, and Gemini event descriptions. |
Google says Google AI Pro subscribers receive Standard-level Google Home Premium benefits, while Google AI Ultra subscribers receive Advanced-level benefits, subject to the applicable plan and availability.
Using the announced hardware prices, the first-year cost becomes:

These totals use the announced U.S. prices and subscription rates, before taxes or promotions. They are not necessarily the current prices. Google’s store page has shown promotional pricing for the Indoor model, so check the live listing before buying. The Outdoor camera was also announced with a two-pack priced at $249.99.
A 2K camera does not automatically mean unlimited recording or free continuous history. The product information distinguishes event-based history from continuous video history, with continuous history associated with the Advanced plan for compatible devices.

- Always know who’s at the door with the wired Nest Doorbell; get an alert when someone approaches and talk to visitors at your door from anywhere[1]
- With person alerts, this video doorbell can tell the difference between a person and a thing and alert you even if they don’t ring the bell[1]
- Nest Hello is now the Nest Doorbell (wired); no matter which name is on the box, you’ll find the same great product inside
- The wired Nest Doorbell requires the Nest app; it’s not compatible with the Google Home app
- Easily check in from anywhere with 24/7 streaming and continuous video recording; go back and view a 3-hour snapshot history to see what you missed[1,2]

Should existing Nest owners upgrade?
The new devices make the most sense for owners who meet several conditions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You already use Google Home or are comfortable moving from the legacy Nest app.
- You want more detail than an older 1080p camera provides.
- You have suitable wired power at the installation point.
- You specifically value descriptive alerts, searchable history, or activity summaries.
- You accept that the most advanced features may require Google Home Premium.
They are less compelling for buyers who need battery operation, local storage, a subscription-free system, continuous recording without a higher-tier plan, or broad international doorbell availability.
For a construction or renovation project, decide the wiring route before choosing the device. The outdoor camera and doorbell should be planned around weather-resistant power, mounting height, cable protection, and access for future servicing. A camera that cannot be powered reliably will not benefit from its higher-resolution sensor.
Lower-cost Google Home-compatible options
Google also announced Walmart’s onn Indoor Camera Wired at $22.96 and onn Video Doorbell Wired at $49.86 in the United States. These devices offer 1080p live view rather than the Nest products’ 2K HDR hardware. Advanced Gemini-related camera features still depend on Google Home Premium.
They may suit buyers who prioritize price and Google Home compatibility over resolution and Nest branding. Check Walmart’s current listings, stock, warranty terms, and live pricing because retail details can change.
What the original shelf sighting really meant
The September 2025 Home Depot discovery was a genuine-looking retail leak, but it was not proof of an early public release. The reported product names and prices were later validated by Google’s October 1 announcement, while the locked display and refused purchase indicated that inventory placement and authorized sale were separate events.
The more important story was the product transition: Google moved its new wired cameras and doorbell to 2K HDR hardware, deeper Google Home integration, and Gemini-powered monitoring. The trade-off is that the most distinctive intelligence features are tied to Google’s cloud ecosystem and, in many cases, a recurring Google Home Premium subscription.
