Google Home is gradually replacing Google Assistant with Gemini for Home on compatible speakers and displays while adding AI-powered camera descriptions, searchable video, smarter automations, and a redesigned Google Home app. The core voice-assistant upgrade is included for eligible devices, but Gemini Live, advanced camera intelligence, Home Brief, searchable video history, and some automation tools require Google Home Premium.

The most important catch for existing owners is permanence: according to Google’s support documentation, once a household switches to Gemini for Home, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant.

The short version

  • What is changing: Gemini for Home combines a new voice assistant, AI camera and doorbell features, and new Google Home app tools.
  • Who gets it: Eligible Google Home and Nest speakers, displays, cameras, and doorbells, subject to device, firmware, account, country, and language restrictions.
  • What is included: The Gemini voice-assistant upgrade is included on compatible speakers and displays.
  • What costs extra: Gemini Live, AI camera descriptions, searchable video history, Daily Home Brief, and “Help me create” automation assistance are tied to Google Home Premium and, in some cases, the Advanced tier.
  • What owners should know: The rollout is staged, early access is separate from Public Preview, and Google says there is no rollback to Assistant after migration.

What Gemini for Home actually is

Gemini for Home is not simply a new version of the Gemini mobile app or a single Google Home app update. Google describes it as a broader transition across its smart-home ecosystem, covering speakers, smart displays, Nest cameras, doorbells, automations, and the Google Home app.

Google announced the product direction on October 1, 2025, describing Gemini for Home as an upgrade intended to make voice requests more conversational and complex while giving camera owners richer explanations of recorded events. The announcement is available on Google’s blog.

#1 Best Overall
Google Audio Bluetooth Speaker with Keychain LED - Wireless Music Streaming - Chalk
  • Google Audio Bluetooth Speaker Wireless Music Streaming - Chalk
  • Music here. Music there. Music everywhere - Create a home audio system that fills your home with sound.* Nest Audio works together with your other Nest speakers and displays, Chromecast-enabled devices, or compatible speakers. And it's easy to set up.
  • Rich, full sound. Room filling sound with 30 watt woofer, tweeter and tuning software. Cranks out powerful punchy music to fill your room
  • Connect with family and friends - Nest Audio helps you stay in touch. Just say, “Hey Google” to broadcast messages on every Nest speaker and display in the house. Use your Nest speakers as an intercom and chat from room to room.
  • Huge help around the house. You can say things like, "Hey Google, what's the weather this weekend?" Ask Google about the news or sports scores. - Includes LED Key Chain (Color May Vary)

In practical terms, the rollout has four connected parts:

  1. A replacement voice assistant for compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays.
  2. AI-generated descriptions, notifications, summaries, and search tools for supported cameras and doorbells.
  3. A redesigned Google Home app with faster controls, improved camera navigation, Ask Home, and natural-language automation creation.
  4. New Gemini-oriented hardware, including the Google Home Speaker (2026).

This distinction matters because eligibility is not uniform. A speaker may receive the basic assistant but not Gemini Live. A camera may support some AI features only after it has been migrated to the Google Home app. Advanced camera functions may require the Advanced subscription tier.

Which speakers and displays support Gemini for Home?

Google’s supported first-party speaker and display list includes:

  • Google Home Speaker (2026)
  • Nest Hub, second generation
  • Nest Audio
  • Nest Mini, second generation
  • Nest Hub Max
  • Nest Hub, first generation
  • Google Home Mini, first generation

Google lists these minimum firmware requirements:

  • Speakers: Cast firmware version 3.76 or later.
  • Displays: Fuchsia firmware version 28 or later.

Some older speakers and displays may support most Gemini for Home functions but not Gemini Live. Therefore, “compatible with Gemini” does not necessarily mean “supports every Gemini feature.” Google’s current device and rollout qualifications are documented in its Gemini for Home support article.

What the new voice assistant can do

Gemini for Home is designed to handle more natural phrasing, follow-up questions, and multi-step requests than the traditional Assistant experience. Google’s examples include commands such as:

  • “Turn off the downstairs lights and lock the front door.”
  • “Add ingredients for paella to my shopping list and check off the spices from my pantry list.”
  • “Set a reminder to water the plants every two weeks.”
  • “What time is my yoga class?”

Supported functions include smart-home control, media discovery and playback, alarms, timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, and questions about home status or history where supported.

These examples should be treated as illustrations of Google’s intended capabilities, not a guarantee that every command will work identically on every device, account, language, or connected product. Device names, permissions, third-party integrations, network conditions, and account settings can all affect the result.

Gemini Live and Ask Home

Gemini Live

Gemini Live is the more open-ended conversational mode. Google describes it as a back-and-forth conversation that can be interrupted and continued without repeating the wake phrase. It is associated with Google Home Premium and requires compatible hardware.

That makes Gemini Live different from ordinary hands-free commands. It is intended for continuing discussions rather than isolated instructions, but availability depends on the device, subscription, rollout stage, and supported language. Google’s examples and qualifications appear in its Gemini for Home feature guide.

Ask Home

Ask Home is a natural-language interface in the Google Home app. It can help users:

  • Find devices and automations.
  • Ask about the current status of the home.
  • Search supported camera history.
  • Create or modify automations.
  • Describe an automation in ordinary language instead of building every step manually.

The “Help me create” feature generates a draft automation from a plain-language description. Users can then personalize and save it. Google says this feature requires Google Home Premium.

Google Nest Audio (3-Pack) Smart Speakers – Multi-Room Wireless Home Speaker Bundle with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Assistant, Stereo Sound, Voice Control & Smart Home Integration
  • Whole-Home Smart Audio – Get powerful, room-filling sound in 3 rooms at once or group all three speakers together for seamless multi-room playback. Perfect for homes, apartments, or offices.
  • Stereo Pairing & Grouping – Pair two speakers for immersive stereo sound or assign each to different areas (e.g., kitchen, living room, bedroom) for dynamic audio throughout your space.
  • Hands-Free Voice Assistant – With Google Assistant built in, control music, get answers, set timers, check the weather, and control smart home devices with simple voice commands.
  • Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Connectivity – Stream your favorite music from services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and more via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Works with Android, iOS, and Chromecast-enabled apps.
  • Smart Home Ready – Nest Audio integrates with thousands of compatible smart home devices – use your voice to dim lights, control thermostats, lock doors, and more.

Review every generated automation before saving it. Check the trigger, conditions, timing, affected devices, and what happens if a device is offline. Test low-risk routines first, such as lights, plugs, or reminders. Be especially cautious with locks, alarms, heaters, garage doors, and other safety-sensitive equipment.

What changes for Nest cameras and doorbells?

Gemini adds richer interpretation to supported camera and doorbell events. Depending on the device, plan, market, and rollout stage, features include:

  • AI-generated event descriptions.
  • More detailed intelligent notifications.
  • Daily Home Brief summaries.
  • Searchable video history.
  • More contextual explanations of recorded activity.
  • Personalized descriptions using saved information, such as a pet’s name.

Instead of a basic alert such as “person detected,” a supported system may provide a fuller description of what the camera observed. These are generated interpretations of camera events, not guaranteed identification, proof of intent, or a complete account of everything that happened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says these features are rolling out to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers. Eligibility is narrower than the general voice-assistant rollout:

  • Nest cameras must generally have been set up in the Google Home app and launched in 2021 or later.
  • Legacy Nest cameras must have been transferred to the Google Home app.
  • Access is restricted to adult household administrators.
  • Availability varies by country and supported language.

Google’s camera feature support page should be treated as the authority for a particular model. Do not assume that every older Nest camera receives every Gemini feature.

Google Home app updates

The redesigned Google Home app is intended to make everyday control and camera use faster and easier. Google’s release notes describe:

  • Faster smart-home control, with Google claiming potential command-processing improvements of up to 1.5 seconds.
  • A modernized camera experience.
  • Dynamic theming.
  • Easier access to camera controls.
  • A revised subscription-comparison screen.
  • Continued expansion of automation starters, conditions, and actions.

These changes are associated with Google Home app version 4.18, which Google said began rolling out on June 2, 2026. Version availability can be staged by platform, account, and region, and version 4.18 should not be treated as a universal requirement for every Gemini feature unless the relevant Google support page says so. Google’s release notes are available at this support page.

Free versus paid: Google Home Premium explained

Google Home Premium is now the central subscription for the Google Home ecosystem. Google says existing Nest Aware subscribers were moved to corresponding tiers:

  • Nest Aware became Google Home Premium Standard.
  • Nest Aware Plus became Google Home Premium Advanced.

This describes Google’s subscription migration and does not mean every historical Nest Aware feature is identical to every Premium feature.

Plan US price Main benefits
Standard $10 per month or $100 per year 30 days of event-based video history, intelligent alerts, Gemini for Home features, Gemini Live on supported speakers and displays, and “Help me create” for automations.
Advanced $20 per month or $200 per year Everything in Standard, plus 60 days of event-based history, 10 days of 24/7 history for compatible cameras and wired doorbells, more detailed notifications, searchable video, AI event descriptions, and Daily Home Brief.

Prices above are US prices supplied by Google’s current Store listing and should not be generalized to other countries. Plan benefits can also change. See the Google Home Premium page for current terms.

Google’s launch material also says Google Home Premium is included with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions, with AI Pro receiving Standard-level benefits and an option to upgrade to Advanced for an additional fee, while AI Ultra includes Advanced. Bundle terms can change, so check the current Google One terms before subscribing specifically for Home features.

How to check for the rollout and enable it

  1. Update the Google Home app to the latest available version.
  2. Confirm that your speaker, display, camera, or doorbell is supported and has current firmware.
  3. Make sure you are using the correct Google Account and are a member of the relevant Google Home household.
  4. Confirm that your country and language are supported and that the home has an internet connection.
  5. On Android, update the Speech Recognition and Synthesis components if Google Home requires them.
  6. When the in-app “Introducing Gemini for Home” prompt appears, tap Get started and follow the setup instructions.

If you dismissed the prompt and have Google Home Premium, reopen the app and check the setup prompt or app inbox. Google’s current instructions are at this support page.

Google’s original launch announcement used the path Profile icon → Home settings → Early access. App labels and menu locations may differ as Google stages updates across Android, iOS, accounts, and regions.

Before you opt in: the no-rollback warning

Opting in is a household-level decision, not merely a setting on one speaker. Google says that after the home switches to Gemini for Home:

  • Gemini for Home becomes available to everyone in the household.
  • Compatible devices added later use Gemini.
  • Devices that become compatible later may switch automatically.
  • The household cannot switch back to Google Assistant.

Wait if your household depends on Assistant behaving in a precise, repeatable way, if members object to an experimental AI transition, or if you need a stable camera workflow. Discuss the change with other household members first.

Common problems and what they mean

No Gemini prompt appears

The rollout may not yet be available for your account, household, country, language, or device. Update the app and firmware, verify household membership, and check Google’s current eligibility documentation. Early access is separate from the Google Home app’s Public Preview program.

The speaker works, but Gemini Live does not

Basic Gemini support and Gemini Live have different requirements. The device may be an older supported speaker or display that does not support Live, or the household may lack the required Premium subscription.

The camera has no AI descriptions

Check whether it was launched in 2021 or later, whether it is set up in the Google Home app, whether a legacy model has been migrated, whether the account is an adult household administrator, and whether the Advanced tier and local language are supported.

The automation is wrong

Read the generated draft carefully. Gemini may misunderstand a device name, time, condition, or scope. Rewrite the request using exact device names and test the routine with low-risk actions before enabling anything security- or safety-related.

A camera description is incomplete or inaccurate

AI summaries can omit context or misinterpret what a camera recorded. Treat them as convenience features, not definitive evidence of identity, intent, or an event’s full circumstances.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Privacy and household access

Camera AI features raise different questions from ordinary voice control. Consider what footage is analyzed, who can view descriptions and Home Brief summaries, which household members can use the feature, and whether saved personal details such as pet names can be removed.

Google says it does not train generative AI models outside Google Home with users’ personal data. That statement does not mean that no data is processed or retained. Review Google’s disclosures and the settings available for your specific account and camera before enabling AI features. Camera features are also limited to adult household administrators according to Google’s support documentation.

Is Google Home Premium worth paying for?

For an existing speaker or display owner: The free-included voice upgrade may be worthwhile if you want more flexible commands and accept the permanent migration. Wait if reliability and familiar Assistant behavior matter more than conversational features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a camera owner: Standard may be enough for event history and basic Premium features. Advanced is the tier to consider if searchable video, AI event descriptions, Daily Home Brief, detailed notifications, or 24/7 history are the main reasons to subscribe. Compare the subscription cost with the number of cameras you actually use.

For an automation enthusiast: “Help me create” can reduce setup effort, but it does not remove the need to understand and test an automation. Home Premium offers convenience, not guaranteed correctness.

For a privacy-conscious household: Consider whether AI-generated camera interpretation and cloud-connected services fit your expectations. If you need fully local processing and maximum control, Google Home Premium may not be the right choice.

For Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers: Check the current bundle terms before purchasing a separate Home plan. The included tier depends on the Google AI subscription and can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you buy new Google Home hardware?

Do not replace an eligible speaker or camera solely to obtain Gemini. First check the model, firmware, Google Home app setup, country, language, and subscription requirements.

New hardware may make sense when you specifically want capabilities unavailable on an older device, need a new wired installation, or are building a Google-centered home from scratch. Google’s Store pages have listed the Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, second generation) from $149.99 and the Nest Doorbell (wired, third generation) at $179.99, but promotions can change; one Store view showed a temporary $139.99 doorbell price.

Wired models also require suitable power and installation. Budget for hardware plus one or two years of Premium rather than comparing the device price alone. Google’s official pages are the appropriate place to verify current prices and offers:

Google’s offer page has also listed a one-month Google Home Premium trial with eligible Nest Cam Indoor wired third-generation, Nest Cam Outdoor wired second-generation, and Nest Doorbell wired third-generation purchases. The trial requires a payment method, has eligibility restrictions, and auto-renews unless canceled. The Google Home Speaker product page has advertised six months of Premium with purchase. Treat both as time-sensitive offers, not permanent entitlements.

Alternatives if Google’s approach is not a fit

Apple Home is a natural alternative for households built around iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or HomePod. See Apple’s Home app page.

Amazon Alexa is better suited to households already invested in Echo speakers and Alexa-compatible products. See Amazon’s Alexa page.

Home Assistant is aimed at technically inclined users who prioritize broad integrations, customization, and greater control over their smart-home setup. See Home Assistant.

These alternatives will not reproduce Google’s Gemini camera summaries or Google Home household integration. Conversely, Google Home Premium is a poor fit for anyone unwilling to pay an ongoing fee for advanced camera history and AI features or who requires maximum local control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
