The August 2025 Google Nest camera leak was broadly accurate—but it is no longer a leak. Google has since launched the wired Nest Cam Indoor (3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen), and wired Nest Doorbell (3rd gen), adding 2K HDR video, new colors and Gemini-powered camera features. The catch is that the most advanced AI tools, including Daily Summaries, require the paid Google Home Premium Advanced plan, and the new 2K Doorbell is wired-only.
What the 2025 Nest leak claimed
On August 26, 2025, reports based on leaked renders, retail packaging and information attributed to Android Headlines described a forthcoming Google Nest refresh. The reports pointed to:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- New indoor and outdoor Nest cameras
- 2K HDR video
- New color options
- Gemini-powered intelligent alerts
- An AI feature called “Daily Summaries”
- A possible rebrand of Nest Aware subscriptions
The original reporting was not a Google announcement. However, Google later confirmed the core product direction. The company now sells the new hardware and calls its subscription service Google Home Premium.

What Google sells now
Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen)
The indoor model is the least expensive entry into the new 2K lineup. Google’s US product page lists it at $99.99. Its key specifications include:
#1 Best Overall
- Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Indoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Kids are playing soccer in the living room”[3]; and get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Google Nest Cam Indoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; and with a wider, taller field of view, you can see even more of a long hallway or large room[1]
- Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)
- 2K HDR video
- 152-degree diagonal field of view
- Snow, Hazel and Berry finishes
- Wired power
- Built-in alerts for people, animals and vehicles
- Zoom and Crop
- Six hours of event-video previews without a paid plan
The included previews are short clips of up to 10 seconds. The camera requires the Google Home app and is not managed through the legacy Nest app or home.nest.com. See the official Nest Cam Indoor product page for current US availability and terms.
Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen)
Google’s current smart-home overview places the wired second-generation outdoor camera in the same 2K and Gemini-enabled family. Google lists 2K HDR video, a 152-degree diagonal field of view, 24/7 live view and low-light or night-vision features.
Outdoor-specific pricing, colors, weather ratings and installation details can vary by market and should be checked on the current local product page. The important distinction is that this is a wired outdoor camera, not a battery model.
Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen)
The new Doorbell is the headline hardware upgrade. Google’s US store lists a price of $179.99 and the following specifications:

- Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Outdoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- Stay in the know with always-on power: Nest Cam Outdoor keeps you plugged into home, day and night, with no need to recharge or replace batteries
- Google Nest Cam Outdoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Rabbits eating garden plants”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; a wider, taller field of view means almost nothing’s out of frame[1] – even in a long driveway or big yard
- 2K HDR resolution
- 2,048 × 2,048 pixels
- 166-degree diagonal field of view
- 1:1 aspect ratio
- Snow, Hazel and Linen colors
- Built-in alerts for people, packages, animals and vehicles
- Six hours of event-video previews, with clips up to 10 seconds
The square image is useful for seeing visitors from head to toe and monitoring packages near the threshold. But 2K is not 4K, and resolution alone cannot overcome poor lighting, motion blur, compression or an obstructed installation.
This Doorbell is wired-only. Google specifies a 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA transformer and chime, sold separately, and the device requires a Google Account and the Google Home app. It is not compatible with the legacy Nest app or home.nest.com. Google’s product page has also shown a one-month Google Home Premium trial with purchase, subject to the offer terms.
Before replacing an older doorbell, check the existing transformer rather than assuming the wiring is suitable. A construction or electrical professional can verify the voltage and VA rating and determine whether an upgrade is needed. Renters and homes without doorbell wiring may need a different product or an approved power solution.

Daily Summaries are Gemini-generated recaps of recorded camera activity. Instead of reviewing every notification and clip, the homeowner receives a condensed overview of what the cameras observed during the day.

- If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, Nest Cam will store up to an hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]. Nest Cam Outdoor comes with a wall plate that can be mounted on your brick wall.
- Put Nest Cam anywhere, outside or in; it’s battery powered, so you don’t need to set it up near an outlet, and the magnetic mount makes installation effortless
- For continuous power and 24/7 video recording with Nest Aware Plus, add a weatherproof power cable or indoor stand with power cable (both sold separately)
Google presents Daily Summaries alongside related features such as:
- Descriptive notifications
- AI-generated event descriptions
- Searchable video history
- Gemini-generated context around alerts
These features should be treated as a convenience layer, not a verified security report. AI may omit an event, misunderstand what is happening or describe a scene incorrectly. Independent testing found the feature useful but not consistently accurate, and nighttime Doorbell footage remained black and white rather than color night vision. For a security-critical incident, review the original recording instead of relying only on the summary.
What works without a subscription?
The new wired camera and Doorbell provide core operation without a paid plan:

Google Home Premium pricing
Google’s US product pages listed the following prices on August 18, 2026. Prices and offers may differ by country, taxes, promotions or account eligibility.
| Plan | US price | Included features listed by Google |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10 per month or $100 per year | 30 days of event-based video history, more intelligent alerts, zoomed-in alert previews, Help Me Create automation features and whole-home history |
| Advanced | $20 per month or $200 per year | 60 days of event-based history, 10 days of 24/7 continuous history, descriptive notifications, searchable history, Gemini event descriptions and Daily Summaries |
The annual plans reduce the effective monthly cost to about $8.33 for Standard and $16.67 for Advanced, before any applicable taxes or promotional changes. The subscription decision is therefore central to the purchase: the hardware supplies better video, but many of Google’s most distinctive AI features are recurring-service features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Event history versus 24/7 recording
These are different recording modes. Event-based history stores clips associated with detected activity. Google lists 30 days on Standard and 60 days on Advanced. 24/7 history continuously records supported wired devices, with Advanced listing up to 10 days.
Do not assume that cancelling a plan preserves paid history indefinitely. Check Google’s current account and cancellation terms before ending a subscription, particularly if recordings may be needed later.

What changed from older Nest hardware?
- Sharper video: The new wired cameras and Doorbell move to 2K HDR, compared with 1080p-class video on older wired indoor hardware and 960p on the battery Doorbell.
- Wider views: The indoor camera lists 152 degrees diagonally, while the Doorbell lists 166 degrees.
- New finishes: Colors are model-specific rather than universal across the range.
- More AI context: Event descriptions, searchable history and Daily Summaries go beyond simple motion notifications.
- Google Home migration: The new devices are managed in Google Home rather than the legacy Nest app.
- A new subscription layer: Google Home Premium replaces the former Nest Aware branding for these services.
The upgrade is less compelling if an existing camera already provides adequate 1080p footage and ordinary motion alerts. The higher resolution also does not guarantee readable faces or license plates in every scene; placement, distance, lighting and motion remain decisive.
Wired versus battery: the decision many buyers could miss
The new 2K Doorbell should not be confused with Google’s separate battery Doorbell. Google’s comparison lists the wired third-generation model at 2K HDR with a 166-degree view, while the battery Doorbell remains a 960p HDR product with a 145-degree view.
Choose the wired model if your home has compatible wiring and you want the sharper image, continuous-history option and reliable permanent power. It is less suitable for renters, detached entrances without wiring or installations where upgrading the transformer is impractical.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA battery-powered replacement is not a direct plug-and-play equivalent of the new 2K Doorbell. Have the existing transformer checked before ordering, and account for any electrical or mounting work required at the entrance.
Who should buy the new Nest products?
The lineup makes the most sense for:
- Google Home households wanting a native camera experience
- Owners of older 1080p Nest cameras who need more detail or a wider view
- Homeowners with compatible doorbell wiring
- People who value searchable history and natural-language event descriptions
- Buyers comfortable paying $10 to $20 per month for expanded history and AI features
Who should skip or wait?
Consider another option if you:
- Need a battery-powered 2K Doorbell
- Want local storage or a subscription-free long-term archive
- Do not want AI interpreting security footage
- Need strong Alexa integration rather than Google Home integration
- Already own a recent Nest camera and only need basic alerts
- Require color night vision
- Cannot provide the Doorbell’s specified transformer power
Alternatives worth considering
Ring is a stronger fit for households built around Amazon Alexa and Ring’s wider security ecosystem. Blink is more suitable when battery operation and lower-cost hardware are priorities. Wyze is worth examining for budget-focused, multi-camera installations.
Compare wiring, storage, ecosystem compatibility, AI features and recurring fees—not just the resolution printed on the box. A lower-resolution camera that fits the installation and does not require an unwanted subscription may be the better practical choice.
The bottom line
The Nest leak was substantially right: Google launched new 2K cameras, a 2K wired third-generation Doorbell, new model-specific colors and Gemini-powered camera intelligence. The biggest caveats are the ones the original leak framing could obscure: Daily Summaries and the broader Gemini experience require Google Home Premium Advanced, and the new 2K Doorbell requires compatible wired power. For Google Home users with suitable wiring, it is a meaningful upgrade; for battery-only, local-storage or subscription-free buyers, it is not the obvious choice.
