Google’s Nest Doorbell (Battery) is not currently confirmed at the advertised $139.99 price. The $40 discount was reported at Best Buy and Walmart on March 20, 2026, but Google and Home Depot were listing the doorbell at its regular $179.99 price in the latest available checks from August 18. At $139.99, it is a reasonable wire-free option; at $179.99, its older 960p video and lack of continuous recording make the purchase much less compelling.
The $40 deal is historical, not confirmed live
The promotion brought Google’s Nest Doorbell (Battery) down from its $179.99 list price to $139.99. A March 20, 2026 report identified Best Buy and Walmart as participating retailers.

However, that does not establish that the sale is still running. The Google Store and Home Depot product page both showed $179.99 in checks dated August 18, 2026. Best Buy and Walmart may have changed their prices, stock, colors, or sellers since the original promotion.
Before buying, confirm the price in the retailer’s live cart. Check that the item is new, identify who sells and ships it, and make sure the $139.99 price applies to the exact color and condition you want. Which Nest Doorbell is this?
This deal concerns the Nest Doorbell (Battery), not Google’s newer Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen). The battery model offers:
- 960p HDR video
- A 145-degree diagonal field of view
- A 3:4 aspect ratio designed to show visitors and packages vertically
- Person, package, animal, and vehicle alerts
- Two-way audio
- Three hours of event-based video history without a subscription
- Google Home app support
Those specifications are serviceable for identifying a visitor, but 960p is modest by current standards. The wired third-generation model provides 2K HDR video, a wider 166-degree view, and six hours of included event history. It can also support 24/7 video history with the appropriate Google Home Premium plan.
Why the battery model still makes sense
The main advantage is installation flexibility. The doorbell can run from its rechargeable internal battery, so you do not need to run low-voltage wiring to the entryway. That makes it particularly practical for renters, apartments, older homes without usable doorbell wiring, and installations where opening walls or hiring an electrician would add cost.

It can also connect to existing doorbell wiring. In that configuration, wiring helps power or charge the unit and can support a compatible existing chime. Google’s technical specifications list a required transformer range of 8–24 VAC, 10 VA, 50/60 Hz.
Battery life is not a fixed number of months. Google says it varies with activity, temperature, and camera settings. A busy entrance, frequent motion events, cold weather, or more demanding settings can increase charging frequency. Plan on occasionally removing the doorbell and charging it indoors.

The limitations to understand before buying
No 24/7 recording
The battery model records motion and other events rather than continuously recording. Connecting it to doorbell wires does not transform it into a fully wired Nest Doorbell or enable 24/7 video history.
Wireless operation does not use your old chime
If you install the doorbell wirelessly, your existing mechanical or electronic wired chime will not ring. You need compatible wiring for that chime to operate, or you must rely on app notifications and a compatible smart speaker or display.

Cold weather can affect charging
The doorbell is rated for an operating range of −20°C to 40°C, but Google notes that the battery may need to be charged indoors when temperatures fall below 32°F/0°C. This is important for exposed entrances in climates with freezing winters: the device may continue operating, yet charging conditions can still require removal.
Google Home and internet access are required
Setup requires a Google Account, the Google Home app, Wi-Fi, a compatible mobile device, and broadband internet with at least 2 Mbps upload speed. The battery model is managed through Google Home, not the older Nest mobile app or the Nest website at home.nest.com. Wi-Fi or service-provider outages can interrupt live streaming, alerts, and access to saved history.
The free tier is limited
A subscription is not required for basic operation. Without Google Home Premium, you receive three hours of event video history and the doorbell’s standard functionality.
Rank #3
- The Nest Doorbell has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, package, animal, and vehicles and send you an alert in the Google Home app[1], no subscription required
- Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with live HD video with HDR and night vision[1]; see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; or add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of event video history[3]
- If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, the Nest Doorbell will store up to 1 hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]
- The Nest Doorbell is easy to install wired or wire-free; the built-in battery means it works with any door, or connect it to your existing doorbell wires with the included wire connector
- Whether you choose battery or wired installation, the battery-powered Nest Doorbell cannot continuously record 24/7 video history, even with a Nest Aware subscription
Google Home Premium can add longer event history and features such as more detailed alerts, familiar-face detection, package detection, and home automations. Treat that plan as an optional recurring cost rather than part of the doorbell’s purchase price.

The wired model is the better technical choice if image detail, a wider view, or continuous recording matters. The battery model is the more practical choice when installation flexibility is the priority.
Who should buy the battery Nest Doorbell?
Buy it at $139.99 if all of the following are true:
- You have verified that the live price is available from a reputable retailer.
- You need a battery-powered installation or cannot conveniently use wiring.
- You are comfortable using the Google Home ecosystem.
- Three hours of event history is enough for your needs.
- You do not require 2K video, local storage, or 24/7 recording.
- You accept periodic charging and the possibility of more frequent charging in cold weather or at busy entrances.
At that price, the savings are meaningful relative to Google’s $179.99 list price, particularly when avoiding new wiring or professional installation is more important than maximum image quality.

Wait for another sale if the only available price is $179.99 and you are not in a hurry. The battery model’s installation convenience remains useful, but its 960p resolution, event-only recording, cloud dependence, and recurring-cost upgrade path weaken the value at full price.

Choose a different model—or the wired third-generation Nest Doorbell—if you need:
- 2K or sharper video
- 24/7 continuous recording
- Local video storage
- Operation outside the Google Home ecosystem
- A doorbell that works with an existing chime without verifying transformer compatibility
- A solution that avoids periodic battery removal
Homeowners with reliable existing wiring should compare the wired third-generation model before committing. Renters and people without practical wiring have a stronger reason to consider the battery version, especially during a verified $139.99 promotion.
Bottom line on the deal
The reported $40-off promotion was real, but the “right now” wording is stale unless a retailer confirms the price again. The latest available Google Store and Home Depot checks showed $179.99, not $139.99.
Buy at $139.99 if you need wire-free installation and accept 960p, event-only recording, Google Home, and periodic charging. Wait at $179.99 unless installation flexibility is worth paying full price. If you need higher resolution or continuous recording, skip this battery model and consider Google’s wired third-generation doorbell or another product designed for those requirements.
