Yes—Google Home can control a compatible garage-door opener or retrofit controller. However, this is not a new 2026 feature: support began rolling out in 2023. You still need compatible hardware, and Google Home compatibility is not guaranteed simply because an opener is Wi-Fi-connected, Chamberlain, LiftMaster, or myQ-enabled.
What Google Home can control
Google Home is the control platform, not a garage-door opener. You need either a smart opener with supported connectivity or a retrofit controller installed on an existing opener.

Depending on the product and integration, the Google Home app may provide:
- Open and close controls
- Open, closed, moving, or stopped status
- Obstruction or fault information
- Notifications and door-state automations
- Remote control when the controller, network, and cloud or Matter connection are available
Google lists garage-door controllers among supported Matter device types, while non-Matter products usually connect through a manufacturer’s Works with Google Home integration. The available controls vary by device.

The feature was reported in May 2023, so headlines describing it as a brand-new Google Home capability are outdated. The current question is whether your specific opener or controller is compatible.

What you need
- A compatible smart opener or retrofit garage-door controller
- A Google Account and the Google Home app
- A reliable home Wi-Fi network
- The manufacturer’s app, if the device is not Matter-enabled
- A compatible Matter hub for Matter setup, control, and remote operation
Google’s current app guidance lists Android 9 or later and iOS/iPadOS 17 or later. The Google Home app cannot be used to set up devices from a computer. Matter hubs include supported Google Nest and Google Home speakers or displays, such as qualifying Nest Hub and Nest Mini models.

How to add a garage-door controller to Google Home
Matter controller
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Add, then Device.
- Scan the Matter QR code or enter the pairing code.
- Assign the controller to your home and a room.
- Give it a distinctive name, such as “main garage door.”
- Test the status, open, and close controls from the device tile.
A Matter device may also be shared from another smart-home ecosystem using Matter Multi-Admin. Thread-based products may additionally require a suitable Thread border router.
Works with Google Home controller
- Set up the controller in the manufacturer’s app first.
- Open Google Home and tap Add → Device.
- Select the manufacturer’s app or search for the manufacturer.
- Tap Link app or Check for devices.
- Authorize the connection and assign the device to a home and room.
- Test control in both Google Home and the manufacturer’s app.
Some third-party devices can appear in Google Home while offering fewer controls than they do in their own app. The manufacturer’s app may remain necessary for calibration, diagnostics, firmware updates, or certain safety-sensitive actions.

Does Google Home work with Chamberlain, LiftMaster, or myQ?
Do not assume it does. An opener can be compatible with myQ without being available as a Google Home device.
myQ’s current setup information promotes the myQ app and selected smart-home partners, but it does not establish a current official Google Home integration. Before buying hardware for Google Home, check the current official compatibility listing for the exact controller—not just the opener brand.
myQ says its Smart Garage Control generally supports many major-brand openers made after 1993 when they use compatible standard safety sensors. That is a myQ compatibility claim, not proof of Google Home compatibility.
If Google Home is essential, a separately supported retrofit controller or a Matter-certified garage-door controller may be a better route than trying to bridge an existing myQ setup. Never bypass safety sensors to make a controller work.
myQ setup and compatibility information
Matter versus a manufacturer cloud integration
| Approach | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Matter | Broader ecosystem interoperability and possible direct Google Home setup | Requires compatible hardware and usually a Matter hub for remote control; advanced features vary |
| Works with Google Home | Often works with existing Wi-Fi hardware and may offer manufacturer diagnostics | Depends on the vendor’s cloud service, account linking, and continued integration support |
Matter can reduce dependence on one manufacturer’s integration, but it does not guarantee every feature is local or available in every ecosystem. Confirm the product specifically supports the Matter garage-door-controller device type.
App control is not the same as voice control
Manual control in the Google Home app is the clearest baseline. Voice commands are more conditional and depend on the device, country, account, assistant, security settings, and whether a PIN is required.
Google’s general voice documentation does not guarantee a universal garage-door voice command for every setup. In a 2026 Google Home community response, a Google employee said Gemini for Home does not support security-sensitive actions such as unlocking a door or garage door, while manual control in the app may remain available. Where supported, switching back to Google Assistant may produce different results.

Therefore, do not buy a controller solely on the promise that “Hey Google, open the garage door” will work. Verify the exact device and current assistant behavior.

How to choose a controller
Before purchasing, check:
- Explicit Google Home or Matter support: “Smart” or “Wi-Fi” alone is not enough.
- Opener compatibility: Confirm the exact model, wiring, protocol, and safety-sensor requirements.
- Physical position sensing: Prefer a controller that reports whether the door is actually open or closed, rather than merely sending a command pulse.
- Security behavior: Check whether opening requires a PIN or confirmation.
- Remote operation: Understand what happens during a power, Wi-Fi, hub, or cloud outage.
- Subscriptions: Separate hardware costs, optional manufacturer plans, Google Home Premium, and installation charges.
- Multiple-door support: Make sure each door has its own sensor and can be named clearly.
- Support longevity: Prefer vendors with documented firmware and integration support.
A retrofit controller is often suitable when an existing opener is reliable. A full smart-opener replacement may make more sense when the opener is old, noisy, unreliable, or due for replacement anyway. Professional installation is sensible for unusual wiring, damaged sensors, high ceilings, heavy doors, or anyone uncomfortable working around garage-door mechanisms and springs.
Automations: useful, but treat the garage as a security system
Google Home can use a door’s open or closed state as an automation starter where the device and integration support it. Practical examples include:
- Notify you if the door remains open
- Remind you to close it at a scheduled time
- Trigger a scene after the door closes
Status notifications are generally safer than automatic opening. Automatic closing must account for children, pets, vehicles, people, and obstructions. Location-based opening can also be unreliable, and some integrations may not permit unattended or PIN-protected actions.

Do not disable, bypass, or misalign the opener’s safety sensors. If the door behaves unexpectedly, stop using remote commands and have the opener inspected by a qualified garage-door professional.

The controller does not appear
- Set up non-Matter hardware in the manufacturer’s app first.
- Use the same Google Account in the manufacturer app and Google Home.
- Confirm the controller is powered and online.
- Check country and model compatibility.
- Resync the linked service: Google Home → profile picture or initial → Home settings → Works with Google → select the manufacturer → Reconnect account.
- Alternatively say, “Hey Google, sync my devices.”
The device appears but cannot be controlled
The integration may expose status without commands, or the device may be locked, obstructed, offline, or waiting for confirmation. Test the opener in its manufacturer app first. If it fails there too, inspect power, Wi-Fi, sensor alignment, and the physical opener.

The reported state is wrong
Check the controller’s physical sensor alignment and recalibrate it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm it is attached to the correct door. With multiple doors, use distinct names such as “left garage door” and “right garage door.”
Voice control stopped working
Check whether Gemini for Home is active, whether the action requires a PIN, and whether the device still works manually in Google Home. A failed voice command does not necessarily mean the underlying app integration is broken.

Google Home labels and availability can vary between Android and iOS, countries, device firmware, and staged rollouts. Installing the latest app version does not guarantee immediate access to every feature.

Privacy and access
Linking a manufacturer account gives that service access to your Google Home connection. Review the manufacturer’s privacy policy, limit shared access to the people who need it, and revoke an integration you no longer use. A garage door is a physical entry point, so convenience should not take priority over accurate status reporting and controlled permissions.
Bottom line
Google Home garage-door control is real and useful, but it is not universal and it did not debut in 2026. Choose a controller with explicit Google Home or Matter support, verify compatibility with the exact opener model, and treat myQ compatibility as a separate question. For most households, reliable manual control in the Google Home app is a safer expectation than guaranteed voice control through Gemini.
