Google ended support for the first-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, the U.S. second-generation model, and the European second-generation model on October 25, 2025. Those thermostats no longer work with the Nest or Google Home apps, and cloud features such as remote control, notifications, Home/Away Assist, third-party assistants, and Nest Protect integration are gone.
The hardware was not completely disabled: Google says owners can still adjust affected thermostats at the wall, and schedules stored on the device continue to run. However, the products no longer receive software or security updates. For many homes, that makes replacement—after checking HVAC compatibility—the more practical choice.

Which Nest thermostats are affected?
Google’s October 25, 2025 cutoff applies specifically to these older Nest Learning Thermostat models:
| Model | Original launch | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 1st generation | 2011 | Affected |
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 2nd generation, U.S. | 2012 | Affected |
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 2nd-generation European version | 2014 | Affected |
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd generation | 2015 | Not included in this shutdown |
| Nest Thermostat E, including the European version | 2017 | Not included in this announcement |
| Nest Thermostat | 2020 | Not included in this announcement |
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 4th generation | 2024 | Not included in this announcement |
Google’s end-of-support documentation and Nest announcement provide the affected-model list. An old Nest is not automatically an affected Nest: the third-generation Learning Thermostat is an important exception.

- Programmable thermostat and automatic control - Create your own home, away and sleep schedules, or have Alexa automatically control the temperature with Alexa+ advanced features.
What stopped working?
After the cutoff, the affected thermostats were unpaired and removed from the relevant app. According to Google, owners lost:
- Remote temperature control from a phone or tablet.
- App-based status checks and notifications.
- Control through Google Assistant, other third-party assistants, and cloud-connected integrations.
- Home/Away Assist.
- Multi-device Eco mode control.
- Software and security updates.
- Integration with Nest Protect, including the documented emergency-shutoff routine.
Important safety-related change: Google says affected thermostats disconnect from Nest Protect and that emergency shutoff will no longer run. Do not assume that this function remains active simply because both products are still mounted and powered.
“Support ended” does not mean Google physically bricked every thermostat. The distinction matters: the wall unit can still operate locally, but it is no longer a fully connected smart thermostat.
What still works?
Google says owners can continue using the thermostat itself to change temperature settings, select available heating or cooling modes, manage auto-schedule settings, and access other controls available directly on the device. Preset schedules stored on the thermostat continue to run.
That local operation may be enough for a household that normally leaves the thermostat alone. It does not restore app control, remote access, alerts, cloud routines, security updates, or the former Nest Protect integration. Google also warns that the lack of updates may lead to declining performance over time; it does not say that every affected unit will immediately stop heating or cooling.
How to identify your Nest model
Do not identify the thermostat solely by age or appearance. Use the following checks:
- Look at the original purchase records, packaging, or installation documentation.
- Check model information on the thermostat, base, or any retained installation paperwork.
- Use Google’s thermostat help center and model-identification guidance.
- If the device disappeared from the app after October 25, 2025, compare its documented physical design and installation date with Google’s model information—but treat appearance as a clue, not proof.
If a thermostat remains visible in an app, that alone does not prove it is supported; cached app data, delayed changes, account circumstances, or a different model may explain what you see. Verify the model number whenever possible.
Should you keep it or replace it?
Keeping it may be reasonable if:
- You are comfortable making adjustments at the wall.
- The stored schedule meets your needs.
- You do not need remote access, notifications, or voice control.
- Your heating and cooling system is operating reliably.
- You accept that the thermostat will receive no further software or security updates.
Replacement is the better choice if:
- You depend on phone control, alerts, or Home/Away behavior.
- Your home uses Nest Protect emergency shutoff integration.
- The thermostat has connection, battery, or reliability problems.
- You want a product with current security support.
- You manage a rental or other property where remote status and control are important.
There is no requirement to replace a unit merely because Google ended cloud support. The decision is whether local-only operation provides enough control and confidence for the home.
Google’s replacement offer
Google said eligible users in the United States and Canada were contacted with an offer for the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th generation) at $149.99 in the U.S. or CA$219.99 in Canada. This was an eligibility-based offer tied to affected devices and household-specific communications, not a price available automatically to every owner indefinitely.

Is the fourth-generation Nest a suitable replacement?
For a household already using Google Home, the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat is the most direct current replacement. Google says it:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Works with the Google Home app.
- Is Matter-certified and can be controlled through other Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants after setup.
- Includes a second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor.
- Supports most 24-volt HVAC systems.
- Adds support for systems involving ventilation, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers.
- Usually does not require a C wire because of Power Sharing technology, although a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be necessary in some installations.
Matter does not mean Google Home is optional during installation. Google says the fourth-generation thermostat requires the Google Home app for setup; Matter broadens control options after setup rather than eliminating Google’s setup requirement.
Do not assume it is a drop-in replacement
The fourth-generation thermostat is designed for many 24-volt gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump, and radiant systems. Compatibility still depends on the actual equipment and wiring. Run Google’s compatibility checker before buying or removing the existing thermostat.
Take extra care with:
- Heat pumps, auxiliary heat, emergency heat, and dual-fuel systems.
- Multi-stage heating or cooling.
- Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and ventilation equipment.
- Zone-controlled systems.
- Homes without a C wire.
- European installations using different wiring conventions or Heat Link equipment.
- Rental properties where the owner may need to authorize the work.
For complex systems, unclear wiring, or unfamiliar equipment, professional HVAC installation is safer than choosing based on the headline price. Photographing the existing wiring is useful, but it is not a substitute for confirming terminal functions and system compatibility.
What are the alternatives?
Staying with Google makes sense if you want the familiar Nest scheduling approach, already use Google Home, or qualify for the replacement offer. Google’s security documentation lists support for the fourth-generation model through at least August 20, 2029 under its minimum five-year policy, calculated from the August 20, 2024 U.S. sale date. That is a minimum security-update date, not a promise that every cloud feature will operate until then.

Switching platforms may be preferable if you want to reduce dependence on Google Home, use Apple Home or another ecosystem as your primary platform, or prefer a different manufacturer’s approach to cloud services and privacy. ecobee’s official smart-thermostat range is one alternative category, but any replacement still needs to match the home’s HVAC equipment and regional wiring requirements.

A first-generation or second-generation Learning Thermostat is a poor used purchase for anyone expecting app control, remote access, voice assistants, notifications, or cloud integrations. Those services have already ended. It may still provide local control, but its low resale price should not be mistaken for a supported smart-home product.
A third-generation Learning Thermostat was not included in this particular shutdown, but it is still an older product. Google’s published list does not promise indefinite future support, so buying one used should not be treated as the same long-term decision as buying a current model.

Practical decision checklist
- Identify the model. Confirm whether it is a first-generation, second-generation, European second-generation, or excluded model.
- List the features you actually use. Include app control, alerts, voice control, Home/Away routines, sensors, and Nest Protect integration.
- Decide whether local-only operation is acceptable. If yes, replacement can wait while the thermostat remains reliable.
- Check Google’s offer. Eligible U.S. and Canadian owners should verify whether their household-specific replacement communication is still valid.
- Verify HVAC compatibility before purchasing. Pay particular attention to heat pumps, stages, accessories, zones, C-wire requirements, and European systems.
- Use a qualified installer when the system is complex. The cost of correcting a wiring or equipment mistake can outweigh the savings from DIY installation.
