How this review-based ranking works
Retailer star ratings are useful signals, but they are not controlled product tests. Review volume, verified-purchase rules, product age, customer mix, and installation quality vary between listings. A 4.8 rating from 20 reviews should not automatically outrank a 4.6 rating from hundreds of reviews.

- Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home. Lock feature: No
- Programmable thermostat that lets you create an energy efficient schedule in the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone
- Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
Best Buy’s available listings showed the Nest Learning Thermostat, 4th Gen, at approximately 4.7/5 from more than 500 reviews, and ecobee Premium at approximately 4.6/5 from more than 700 reviews. The standard Nest Thermostat showed approximately 4.4/5 from more than 2,000 reviews. These figures are retailer observations, not permanent scores. See ecobee Premium reviews, Nest Learning reviews, and current Nest listings.
1. ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium
Best overall for most mixed-platform homes. ecobee Premium ranks first because it combines strong review volume with broad compatibility, a clear touchscreen, room sensors, and support for Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Assistant. Independent coverage also frequently places it among the best overall smart thermostats. See the official ecobee Premium specifications.
Customers commonly praise the display, setup, sensor-based comfort control, air-quality features, and smart-home integration. The main complaints are price, app complexity, connectivity issues, and confusion about compatibility with heat pumps, multi-stage equipment, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and ventilators.
A remote sensor measures temperature and sometimes occupancy; it does not independently heat or cool the room. It can prioritize a bedroom, for example, but cannot repair poor ductwork, inadequate insulation, blocked registers, or an undersized system.
Choose it if: you want room-by-room comfort, use more than one smart-home platform, or have a heat pump and want a feature-rich interface. Look elsewhere if: your system is very simple and price is the overriding concern.
2. Google Nest Learning Thermostat, 4th Gen
Best for Google Home users. The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat has one of the strongest available retailer review profiles and is widely recognized for its design, physical interaction, automatic scheduling, and Google Home integration. See the official product page.
Reviewers frequently mention its appearance, ease of use, overall performance, and learning schedule. Its main trade-off is ecosystem dependence: it is a better fit for Google households than for Apple-first or mixed-platform homes. Customers also report occasional app, connectivity, and integration concerns.

“Learning” does not guarantee lower energy bills. Results depend on climate, equipment, insulation, occupancy, setpoints, and whether household members accept or override the automatic schedule.
Choose it if: you want a premium Google thermostat with automatic scheduling. Look elsewhere if: Apple Home support or broad platform neutrality is essential.

- An Alexa thermostat - Amazon Smart Thermostat is an easy way to switch from a traditional thermostats for homes and help reduce energy usage.
- Create comfort zones throughout your home by connecting to select Alexa devices to automatically adjust heating and cooling based on temperature readings or presence detection.
- Save money and energy - After purchase, Amazon will send you an email with details about home thermostat rebates that may be available from energy providers in your area.
- Save energy - According to EPA estimates, ENERGY STAR certified thermostats save an average of $90 on yearly energy bills.
- Programmable thermostat and automatic control - Create your own home, away and sleep schedules, or have Alexa automatically control the temperature with Alexa+ advanced features.
3. Honeywell Home T9
Best alternative for hot and cold rooms. The Honeywell Home T9 uses remote sensors to help prioritize occupied rooms and is a strong comfort-focused alternative to ecobee and Nest. Resideo positions it for room-by-room temperature management, and independent comparisons regularly identify it as a good sensor thermostat. See the official T9 information.
Its strengths include familiar HVAC heritage, broad conventional-system support, and useful room sensors. The app and ecosystem experience are generally less polished than Google’s or ecobee’s, and Honeywell’s product names can be confusing. Confirm the exact package, sensor count, equipment support, and installation requirements before buying.
Choose it if: one bedroom or living area is consistently too hot or cold. Look elsewhere if: the smoothest app and broadest smart-home integration matter more than sensor-led comfort.
4. ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced
Best ecobee value. The Enhanced model preserves much of ecobee’s compatibility and scheduling experience at a lower position in the product range. Best Buy listings have shown approximately 4.7/5 with hundreds of reviews, although the score and volume can change by listing. See the official ecobee Enhanced page.
It is a sensible choice for buyers who want ecobee’s broad platform support without paying for every Premium feature. Check whether the package includes the sensor, voice-assistant functionality, air-quality features, or other accessory support you want. A less expensive model is not necessarily less suitable for basic heating and cooling.
Choose it if: you want ecobee’s core experience at a lower cost. Look elsewhere if: you specifically need Premium-only hardware or monitoring features.
5. Emerson Sensi Touch 2
Best for conventional scheduling and manual control. The Sensi Touch 2 offers a familiar touchscreen thermostat experience, remote control, scheduling, and a privacy-oriented alternative to heavily automated products. See the official Sensi Touch 2 page.
It suits homeowners who want smart access without aggressive learning features. It generally requires a C-wire, so it is not a universal replacement for every old thermostat. Verify current Apple Home, Matter, Alexa, and Google support for the exact model and firmware rather than assuming that every Sensi product has identical capabilities.
Choose it if: clear schedules, physical controls, and straightforward operation matter most. Look elsewhere if: you need advanced room sensing or complex accessory control.

6. Google Nest Thermostat
Best lower-cost Google option. The standard Nest Thermostat offers an approachable design and Google Home integration at a lower price than the Learning model. Its substantial retailer review volume makes it a meaningful comparison product.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →It ranks below the Nest Learning Thermostat because it does not provide the same learning-thermostat experience and has more limited feature and HVAC-system support. It is best for compatible, relatively straightforward systems rather than complex equipment or buyers seeking robust remote-room control. See the official Nest Thermostat page.
7. Amazon Smart Thermostat
Best for Alexa-first households on a budget. Amazon’s thermostat covers basic scheduling and remote control while fitting naturally into an Alexa home. Its principal advantage is price and ecosystem convenience, not premium hardware or the broadest comfort-control strategy. See the current Amazon product listing.
It is less compelling for Apple Home or Google Home households and offers fewer premium room-sensing and automation features than the leading models. A low purchase price cannot compensate for an incompatible HVAC system or an ecosystem mismatch.
8. Honeywell Home T10 Pro
Best treated as a professional-installation product. The T10 Pro can be appropriate for more complex HVAC configurations, but availability, setup, and configuration often depend on an HVAC professional. It should not be confused with the consumer-oriented T9. See Resideo’s T10 Pro information.
Consumer review evidence is sparse. One Best Buy listing showed only one review and a 2.0 rating, which is far too small a sample to establish a reliable product verdict. The T10 Pro therefore ranks low for consumer transparency, not necessarily because it is technically inferior.
Choose it if: an HVAC professional recommends it for your equipment. Look elsewhere if: you want a simple DIY purchase with abundant comparable customer feedback.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Wyze Thermostat
Best for basic compatible systems where upfront cost matters most. Wyze offers a lower-cost entry into connected thermostat control and a straightforward app. See the official Wyze Thermostat page.
It sits near the bottom because it generally offers less sophisticated HVAC control, room sensing, ecosystem depth, and support than the leading models. Compatibility, wiring, cloud-account requirements, app reliability, and support quality should all be checked carefully. Product availability and policies can change.

- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: The top-rated mobile app for Android and iOS devices makes it easy to control your comfort from a smartphone or tablet
Choose it if: you have a basic compatible system and want to minimize hardware cost. Look elsewhere if: you need complex equipment control, broad integrations, or premium support.
10. Mysa Smart Thermostat V2
Best specialist choice for electric baseboard heating. Mysa is designed for electric baseboard, radiant, fan-forced convector, and other line-voltage heating systems. It is not a normal replacement for a low-voltage furnace-and-air-conditioner thermostat. See the official Mysa product page.
Mysa ranks tenth only in a general U.S. comparison because its audience is narrower and exact voltage and heater type matter greatly. For an apartment or older home with electric baseboards, it may be the correct first choice. Do not purchase it for ordinary central HVAC without confirming the system type.
Choose by household and HVAC system
| Need | Strongest candidates | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall | ecobee Premium | Confirm equipment and accessory compatibility |
| Google Home | Nest Learning 4th Gen | More dependent on Google’s ecosystem |
| Apple Home | ecobee Premium, ecobee Enhanced, Sensi Touch 2 | Verify exact model support |
| Alexa | Amazon Smart Thermostat or ecobee | Alexa support does not make features identical |
| Hot and cold rooms | ecobee Premium or Honeywell T9 | Sensors cannot increase HVAC capacity |
| Manual control and privacy | Sensi Touch 2 | A C-wire is commonly required |
| Electric baseboards | Mysa | Check voltage and heater type |
| Complex professional HVAC | Honeywell T10 Pro or ecobee Premium | Use the manufacturer checker and an installer |
Compatibility matters more than the star rating
Most mainstream smart thermostats are designed for low-voltage HVAC, including conventional furnaces, central air, and many heat pumps. They are not automatically suitable for electric baseboards, millivolt systems, communicating HVAC equipment, or every dual-fuel, multi-stage, variable-speed, boiler, humidifier, dehumidifier, ventilation, or zoned system.
Before purchasing, identify whether you have:
- A conventional furnace and central air system.
- A heat pump or dual-fuel system.
- Two-stage or variable-speed equipment.
- A boiler, radiant system, or millivolt setup.
- Humidifier, dehumidifier, ventilation, or zoning controls.
- A proprietary communicating thermostat.
- Electric baseboard or other line-voltage heating.
Use the manufacturer’s compatibility checker for the exact model. If your thermostat has no visible C-wire, photograph the wiring and inspect the furnace control board before assuming that a power adapter or power extender will work. A C-wire supplies continuous power, but “works without a C-wire” does not mean every system configuration is safe or supported.
Installation checklist
- Record the current thermostat model and photograph every wire before disconnecting anything.
- Identify the HVAC type, including heat pump, dual fuel, stages, zones, and accessories.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility tool using the exact terminals and equipment details.
- Confirm the C-wire, power extender, or approved alternative power method.
- Turn off HVAC power at the appropriate breaker or service switch.
- Check whether the new wall plate covers existing holes or requires a compatible trim plate.
- Use professional installation for communicating systems, complex heat pumps, multi-stage equipment, accessory controls, or uncertain wiring.
Do smart thermostats guarantee energy savings?
No. A smart thermostat can make efficient scheduling, remote adjustment, and occupancy-based changes easier, but savings depend on climate, insulation, equipment efficiency, occupancy, setpoints, heat-pump strategy, and whether users accept or override automated schedules. Utility rebates also vary by ZIP code, utility, model, and program year; check the current rebate page for your utility.
Do subscriptions matter?
Separate the thermostat’s core heating and cooling control from optional services. Scheduling, remote control, and basic sensor operation may be included, while advanced energy reports, security or monitoring services, AI features, extended support, or other premium functions can have separate terms. Subscription policies change, so check the manufacturer’s current support and pricing pages before purchase.
Final verdict
The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is the strongest general recommendation because it balances customer sentiment, room sensors, compatibility, and cross-platform support. Choose the Nest Learning Thermostat, 4th Gen if you are committed to Google Home and want automatic scheduling and a premium design. Choose the Honeywell T9 or ecobee Premium for uneven room temperatures, the Sensi Touch 2 for straightforward manual scheduling, and Mysa for electric baseboard heating.
