Google Ends Production of Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Lock: What Owners Need to Know

Google announced on March 28, 2025, that it was ending production of the Nest Protect smoke and carbon-monoxide alarm and ending sales of the Nest x Yale Lock. Neither product was immediately switched off. Existing Nest Protect units were promised software and security updates through their expiration dates, while Google said existing Nest x Yale Locks would continue functioning and receiving security updates.

The practical issue is different for each product: a Nest Protect must be replaced when it reaches its 10-year manufacturing-date limit, while a functioning Nest x Yale Lock does not require an emergency replacement solely because sales ended.

What Google discontinued

Product What ended What current owners should do
Nest Protect Manufacturing ended; remaining stock was to be sold while supplies lasted. Keep using a healthy, unexpired unit, but replace it 10 years after its manufacture date.
Nest x Yale Lock Sales and production ended. Keep using a functioning lock. Check the Nest Connect bridge if remote control is unavailable.

Ending production means no new units are being manufactured. Ending sales means the product is leaving the normal retail lineup. Neither phrase automatically means that cloud services, app control, updates, or local operation stop immediately.

Nest Protect: do you need to replace it now?

No—not solely because Google stopped making it. Google said existing Nest Protect alarms would continue working and receive software and security updates through their expiration dates. The important deadline is the alarm’s certified service life, not the date Google announced the product change.

#1 Best Overall
Kidde Smart Smoke & CO Detector with Ring, AA Battery, RGCUDR-RW | Ring App Enabled, Wireless Interconnect Capability, Voice Alerts, Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detection for Homes & Apartments
  • Double the Detection: Alerts you to both smoke and carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Real-Time Ring App Notifications: Home or away, get smoke, CO or low battery warnings (no subscription required)
  • Over 25% faster smoke detection (based on internal testing vs a leading competitor)
  • Optional Ring subscription (sold separately) with 24/7 smoke and CO monitoring for $5/month
  • No Wiring Needed: Operates on 2-AA alkaline batteries (included) for simple use throughout your home

Second-generation Nest Protect units should be replaced 10 years after their manufacture date. A unit bought recently may already have used part of that service life if it came from old inventory. Check the date and replacement information on the back of the alarm; the purchase date is not the relevant date. See First Alert’s replacement guidance.

Replace a Nest Protect when:

  • It has reached its 10-year manufacturing-date limit.
  • It reports a sensor, battery, or other fault.
  • It fails its test or cannot be tested reliably.
  • Its age cannot be verified, particularly if it is used or marketplace stock.

An alarm appearing online in the Nest app is not proof that it remains certified for safety use. Follow the device’s replacement warning and applicable local fire-safety requirements.

The official Nest Protect replacement

Google directs owners to the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm, including battery-powered and hardwired versions. First Alert says its SC5 is designed as a compatible replacement for the second-generation Nest Protect, can work alongside existing Nest Protect devices through Google Home, and may use the existing Nest Protect mounting bracket. The hardwired version includes a quick-connect adapter.

This is a transition product, not necessarily identical hardware or software. Setup and some management may involve the First Alert app, and Google Home grouping, notifications, troubleshooting, and interconnect behavior may differ from the original Nest Protect experience. Confirm the exact battery or hardwired model before ordering.

  • Whole Home Smart Connectivity: Get mobile alerts for every hardwired alarm in your home by adding just one Kidde smart detector; check the user guide for more information

For a hardwired alarm, switch off power at the circuit breaker before disconnecting or handling household wiring. A compatible mounting bracket does not guarantee that every connector, electrical box, installation condition, or local-code requirement is identical. Google’s replacement instructions should be followed.

Can you still buy a Nest Protect?

Google’s US Store now labels Nest Protect “No longer available.” Remaining retailer inventory may exist, but used or old-stock alarms are a poor choice unless the manufacturing date and remaining service life are clear. Avoid unverified marketplace listings for a safety-critical device. Preserving the familiar app experience is not worth buying an alarm with only a few service years left.

Nest x Yale Lock: does it need immediate replacement?

No. Google ended sales and production of the original Nest x Yale Lock but said existing locks would not be remotely deactivated, would continue functioning, and would receive security updates. Google did not publish a new final support date in that announcement.

There is an apparent inconsistency in Google’s public security-update information: a general table lists the lock’s standard five-year window as ending March 31, 2023, while Google’s March 2025 announcement separately promised continued security updates. The safer conclusion is to rely on the specific announcement for Google’s stated commitment without treating support as indefinite or assigning an unconfirmed end date.

  • Over 25% faster smoke detection (based on internal testing vs a leading competitor)

  • No Wiring Needed: Operates on 2-AA alkaline batteries (included) for simple use throughout your home
  • Whole Home Smart Connectivity: Get mobile alerts for every Kidde alarm in your home through wire-free interconnectivity — when one alarm sounds, they all do. (Check the user guide for more information)

Local operation versus remote operation

  • Keypad: The lock can still be operated locally at the door.
  • Remote control: Requires the lock to remain connected through the required bridge arrangement.
  • Cloud features: Notifications, remote locking, activity history, and passcode management can depend on Google’s current app and service support.

Why Nest Connect still matters

The original Nest x Yale Lock relies on Nest Connect for Wi-Fi connectivity and remote control. Nest Guard can no longer serve as this bridge after Nest Secure cloud support ended. Google’s support guidance identifies Nest Connect as the required bridge for the affected setup.

If the keypad works but the lock is offline in the app, check that Nest Connect is powered, connected, and within suitable range. If remote access is unavailable, the keypad may still work locally. Not every Nest x Yale owner needs a replacement lock; this issue mainly affects configurations that depended on Nest Secure or lack a working Nest Connect.

What replaces the Nest x Yale Lock?

Google and Yale’s intended successor is the Yale Smart Lock with Matter. It uses Matter over Thread, supports Google Home and other Matter ecosystems, includes a physical key, and is advertised with battery life of up to 12 months. It is not simply the same Nest x Yale Lock under a new name.

Nest x Yale Lock Yale Smart Lock with Matter
Connectivity Nest Connect bridge for remote access Matter over Thread
Key Key-free original design Physical key included
Platforms Primarily Nest and Google Google Home and compatible Matter platforms, including Apple Home, Alexa, and SmartThings
Requirements Nest Connect where required Matter hub and Thread border router for Matter connectivity and remote access

Before buying, check door thickness, bore and deadbolt dimensions, keyed versus key-free preference, and whether your home has a compatible Matter hub and Thread border router. Yale lists devices such as the Google TV Streamer, second-generation Nest Hub, Nest WiFi Pro, and Nest Hub Max among compatible Google devices. Availability should be verified directly: Yale’s product page has displayed a $189.99 price signal while also labeling the product “Coming Soon.”

Should you buy remaining discontinued stock?

Nest Protect

Only consider remaining stock if the manufacturing date leaves substantial certified service life, the seller is reputable, and the exact battery or hardwired version is suitable. Do not buy a used alarm with an unknown age. A lower sticker price can be misleading when the device is already several years into its 10-year life.

Nest x Yale Lock

Retailer-dependent leftover inventory may exist, but Google no longer sells the original lock as part of its current portfolio. Do not rely on an old indexed Google Store price, including the historical $249 listing, as a current price or availability signal. Check warranty status, return rights, bridge requirements, and the seller’s support arrangements before paying a premium.

Practical decision guide

  • Keep your Nest Protect: It is unexpired, passes testing, has no fault warnings, and meets your needs.
  • Replace your Nest Protect now: It is expired, faulty, untestable, or of uncertain age. The First Alert SC5 is Google’s designated transition option, but verify certification, power type, installation, and local requirements.
  • Keep your Nest x Yale Lock: It works mechanically, you have the required Nest Connect where needed, and the existing Google/Nest setup remains suitable.
  • Replace your Nest x Yale Lock: It is failing, Nest Connect is unavailable, you want Matter or other platforms, or you need a physical-key backup.
  • Wait before replacing either product: The device is functioning, within its service life, and you are not gaining a meaningful safety or compatibility benefit from changing it now.
