Neither glass nor polycarbonate is best for every greenhouse. Single-pane glass generally offers more light transmission and a clearer view; multiwall polycarbonate generally insulates better and weighs less. The right choice depends on the specific panel, your frame, local climate, and how you use the greenhouse. Here is how to compare them.

Glass vs. polycarbonate greenhouse: how the figures compare

Compare a specific glazing construction and thickness, not just the material name. Virginia Tech Extension’s 2026 educational comparison gives these typical values; product specifications can differ, and its cost figures are estimates rather than live quotes.

Glazing type Light transmission U-factor (BTU/hr·ft²·°F) Estimated lifespan Estimated cost per ft²
Standard single glass, 3 mm 88–94% 1.0–1.1 25+ years $2.50–$6.00
Twin-wall polycarbonate, 8 mm 80–83% 0.5–0.7 20+ years $3.00–$6.90
Twin-wall polycarbonate, 10 mm 78–82% 0.5–0.6 20+ years $3.50–$5.50
Twin-wall polycarbonate, 16 mm 74–80% 0.3–0.5 20+ years $4.50–$11.95
Corrugated polycarbonate 88–94% 0.8–1.2 20+ years $2.00–$5.00

These values are from Virginia Tech Extension’s 2026 table of common greenhouse glazing materials. Lower U-factor means less heat transfer through the listed glazing. The figures do not predict whole-greenhouse energy use: the frame, seals, ventilation, climate, and heating practices also matter. Lifespans are educational estimates, not guarantees for a particular product or installation. Virginia Tech Extension explains the comparison and its qualifications.

What matters most when choosing greenhouse glazing?

Light and visibility

Standard 3 mm single glass is listed at 88–94% light transmission. Twin-wall polycarbonate’s listed range varies with thickness: 80–83% at 8 mm, 78–82% at 10 mm, and 74–80% at 16 mm. Corrugated polycarbonate is listed at 88–94%. These are typical material figures, not a guarantee of the light level inside a finished greenhouse. For a clear view and high transmission, single glass is a strong candidate; compare the precise product data before deciding.

It helps protect plants from sun, rain, wind, and cooler temperatures, making it a practical choice for year-round gardening in backyards, gardens, and patios.

Heat transfer

In the same table, single glass has a U-factor of 1.0–1.1, while twin-wall polycarbonate ranges from 0.3–0.7 depending on thickness. The listed 16 mm twin-wall panel has the lowest U-factor range, alongside lower light transmission than thinner listed twin-wall panels. A lower U-factor indicates less heat transfer through the glazing itself; it does not establish annual heating costs or payback for your greenhouse.

Weight, strength, and handling

Virginia Tech describes polycarbonate as relatively strong, rigid, and lightweight. Its lower weight can be useful where glazing weight is a concern, but the frame still needs to suit the panel and installation. Polycarbonate can scratch, while glass may break; the material choice should account for site conditions, handling, and the structure. Washington State University Extension treats glazing as one part of greenhouse design alongside heat retention and structural considerations: Greenhouse Construction and Management.

Durability and maintenance

Virginia Tech’s educational table lists 25+ years for standard single glass and 20+ years for twin-wall polycarbonate. Those figures are not warranties or universal service-life promises. Glass type, breakage, support, installation, and maintenance affect the result. Virginia Tech also notes that polycarbonate panels are resistant to UV degradation and that light transmission experiences little reduction for 10 years; UV-resistant and condensation-reducing treatments may be used. Product-specific care and warranty details still matter.

Price and installed cost

The table’s estimated per-square-foot ranges overlap, and they are educational averages that may change; brand values differ. They are not current retail quotes and do not establish installed cost. Get quotes for the exact panel, frame requirements, fasteners and other accessories, and installation. A lower panel price alone may not mean a lower project cost.

These panels are designed to handle everyday outdoor use while allowing enough light in for seedlings and mature plants. At the same time, they help reduce harsh UV exposure, creating a more controlled setting for gardening. This design works well for both new and experienced gardeners across different regions
  • 【Stable Base Options】The base feet of the greenhouse can be anchored in multiple ways to increase stability in wind and snow. This flexibility makes it easier to adapt the structure to various outdoor surfaces and climates, helping keep the greenhouse in place and giving added security during changing seasons and weather patterns
  • 【User-Friendly Details】Thoughtful details make daily use and maintenance easier. Rain gutters on both sides guide water away from the frame, which helps manage runoff during rain or snow. A smooth sliding door offers easy access when you are carrying trays, tools, or pots, and the lockable handle helps manage entry. Adjustable roof vents support continuous airflow, allowing you to control temperature and humidity levels so your plants receive fresh air and a more balanced growing environment

Installation details that can change the decision

Polycarbonate expands and contracts significantly with temperature, and Virginia Tech says special anchors are needed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for panel orientation, sealing, fastening, cleaning, and warranty; do not assume a panel can be installed like glass or that different polycarbonate constructions share the same requirements. For either material, confirm that the greenhouse frame and retention system are suitable for the chosen glazing. The University of Georgia Extension’s Hobby Greenhouses provides additional hobby-greenhouse purchasing and design context.

Which material should you choose?

Consider glass when light, view, and service life lead

  • You prioritize a clear view and the high light-transmission range listed for standard single glass.
  • Your frame and site conditions suit the chosen glass.
  • You have compared breakage considerations and the full installation cost, rather than relying only on a lifespan estimate.

Consider multiwall polycarbonate when insulation and weight lead

  • You prioritize lower heat transfer through the glazing and a lightweight panel.
  • You are willing to choose a specific thickness by balancing its U-factor, light transmission, price, and frame details.
  • You can accommodate its expansion, fastening, and scratch-care requirements.

For a replacement, check compatibility first

  1. Identify the greenhouse make and model, if known, and measure the opening.
  2. Check the existing frame and panel-retention system.
  3. Confirm the required panel thickness and profile before ordering; polycarbonate products are not interchangeable by material name alone.
  4. Ask the supplier to confirm compatibility and provide the chosen panel’s installation and care instructions.

If you plan to heat the greenhouse

Compare expected heat loss for the complete greenhouse in your local climate. The glazing table alone cannot calculate annual energy bills or payback for an individual structure; frame, sealing, ventilation, and heating practices affect the outcome.
