Treat the glass as a fragile historical object, choose the electrical hardware around its actual shape, and have a qualified electrician handle any uncertain wiring or rewiring.
What the glass object originally did
Those “glass things on the top of telephone poles” are line insulators. Their original job was to keep an overhead wire electrically separated from the wood, metal, or other supporting structure. In a telegraph system, the signal traveled through a metal line; placing that line directly beside a wet wooden pole could create a shorting path. The insulator supplied a non-conductive layer, with the wire seated in a groove. Similar insulators isolated wires from utility poles, towers, and buildings.
That history explains the distinctive flared skirt, threaded or grooved top, and heavy glass, but it does not make the object a lamp component. A historic insulator was designed for line support and electrical isolation, not for holding a socket, cord, shade, or household mains connection.
A short history of vintage glass insulators
Hemingray is one documented manufacturing story, not a label for every old insulator. The Indiana Historical Bureau reports that Gray & Hemingray began in Cincinnati in 1848, later moved its factory to Muncie, and had become a world leader in glass-insulator manufacturing by 1900. Owens-Illinois purchased the company in 1933, and Hemingray insulators remained a major product until 1967.

An unidentified piece should not be dated or attributed from appearance alone. Color, embossing, mold seams, shape, and condition can help collectors research it, while museum and collector references provide context without proving that a particular lamp conversion is safe.
Choose the insulator before buying lamp hardware
Start with the artifact you actually have. Measure its widest diameter and height, inspect the opening or threaded area, and photograph every side, including embossed marks and chips. Then assess how a proposed base, stem, socket, or shade would contact the glass. The fit is a project-specific decision; a product described as a lamp-making kit is not evidence that its parts fit your insulator.

| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Form and color | Is the glass shape stable on its intended base? Are visible features worth preserving rather than hiding? |
| Condition | Are there cracks, bruises, sharp chips, deep scratches, or a loose threaded area that could worsen under pressure? |
| Attachment | Where can a holder or base contact the object without clamping, drilling, or forcing the glass? |
| Stability | Will the completed assembly stand securely, with the cord routed so it cannot pull the insulator over? |
| Electrical evaluation | Can the complete socket, cord, plug, strain relief, and enclosure be inspected by a qualified electrician? |
Prefer reversible support
A reversible mount is usually the least destructive approach for a collectible: support the insulator in a purpose-made cradle, collar, or base rather than drilling it or forcing hardware into a narrow opening. The exact support still depends on the individual piece. If a fitting needs pressure, adhesive, heat, or modification of the glass, stop and obtain specialist advice before proceeding.
Plan the project without assuming a universal kit
“Lamp making kit” and “lamp holder and cord set” are useful search phrases for ordinary lamp fittings. They can help you locate sockets, cord sets, switches, strain reliefs, and bases, but no particular kit has been established as compatible with every vintage line insulator, and product stock or testing is not guaranteed.

- Document the object. Record dimensions, maker marks, damage, and the way it currently rests. Keep this record with the piece.
- Sketch the assembly. Show the insulator, support, socket, shade (if any), cord exit, and center of gravity. A sketch exposes clearance and tipping problems before you buy parts.
- Mock up the mechanical fit unplugged. Use non-powered temporary supports to confirm that the glass is not bearing point pressure and that the assembly is stable.
- Select listed, ordinary lamp components. Choose fittings appropriate to the intended lamp and local electrical requirements, but do not assume a catalog dimension guarantees a safe fit.
- Have the electrical work assessed. If you are uncertain about any connection, insulation, grounding, strain relief, socket condition, or enclosure, stop and consult a qualified electrician.
- Test the finished stability before use. Check that the lamp cannot rock, that the cord cannot pull it down, and that no fitting bears against a sharp glass edge. Electrical testing and approval belong to the electrician.
Why old electrical parts require extra caution
The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that aged insulation can become brittle and fall away, creating short-circuit and possible electrocution hazards. Plugs, sockets, and other fittings may also have deteriorated. Those warnings concern old electrical fittings generally; they are not a tested conversion procedure for a glass line insulator.
“If there is any doubt about rewiring and using an old electrical fitting, consult a qualified electrician.”

— Canadian Conservation Institute
A line insulator that has never been part of a lamp may have no original lamp wiring to preserve. The CCI recommends carefully removing and documenting old wires and fittings when rewiring a heritage lamp is necessary; that preservation step applies to an object with historic lamp fittings, not automatically to a standalone insulator.
Stop-work signs
- The glass has a crack, impact bruise, unstable base, or sharp exposed edge.
- A proposed holder must be forced, drilled, glued permanently, or tightened against the glass.
- The cord can rub on glass, pull the lamp sideways, or leave the socket unsupported.
- You cannot identify the condition or rating of a reused socket, plug, switch, or cord.
- You are unsure how local electrical rules apply to the finished assembly.
Protect the artifact while making the lamp
Handle the insulator with clean, dry hands over a padded surface. Do not use abrasive cleaners that could obscure embossing or scratch the surface. Keep clamps, metal edges, and fasteners from contacting vulnerable areas. Photograph the object before assembly and retain any original labels or associated parts separately.

If the piece has collector significance, consider a completely reversible display mount instead of a permanent conversion. The National Insulator Association’s collector resources can help with identification and context, but they do not establish a lamp-conversion standard.
When the project is a good idea—and when it is not
A sensible candidate
- The insulator is intact and sits securely in a non-destructive support.
- The planned holder can attach without stressing the glass.
- The cord route and center of gravity are clear in the unplugged mock-up.
- A qualified person can evaluate the complete electrical assembly.
Choose display-only use instead
- The glass is cracked, chipped at a load-bearing point, or valuable enough that alteration would reduce its significance.
- No stable, reversible mount can be found.
- The only apparent solution requires drilling, aggressive adhesive, heat, or force.
- Electrical condition or compliance cannot be established.
The best result may be a sculptural display with a separate nearby light rather than a powered lamp. That preserves the artifact and avoids treating its historic electrical role as proof of modern safety.
What this project cannot promise
There is no source-backed universal insulator holder, attachment system, or wiring sequence for this conversion. Compatibility varies with the insulator’s dimensions, condition, and geometry; electrical safety depends on the complete modern assembly and its installation. A product listing, vintage appearance, or successful fit on another collector’s piece is not a safety certification.
