The most useful kitchen gadget is the one that removes a task you repeat—not simply the newest appliance. For pressure-friendly meals, consider a multicooker; for smaller batches and reheating, an air fryer may fit; and for recurring chopping, a food processor or mini chopper can reduce hands-on prep. Before buying, weigh the time and effort saved against setup, cleanup, storage, and cost.
Choose a gadget by the bottleneck it solves
Start with a cooking or prep task that regularly slows you down. Then check whether the device suits the foods and portions you actually make. Capacity, ease of operation, cleanup, and the space it occupies matter as much as its advertised functions. No single appliance is a time-saver for every cook.

For meals that suit pressure cooking: a multicooker
An electric pressure cooker or multicooker is worth considering when pressure cooking fits dishes already in your rotation. Instant Pot describes its Duo 6QT as having multiple safety mechanisms and says: “Good Food Done Faster: Cook up to 70% faster than traditional slow cooking methods.” That is the manufacturer’s comparison with traditional slow cooking methods, not an independent test or a promise for every recipe.
Pressure-cooking time is not the same as total elapsed time. Include preparation and the appliance’s full cooking cycle when deciding whether it will make a particular meal easier to fit into your day. A suitable capacity and familiar recipes are better guides than the number of modes alone.

For two cooking methods in one appliance: a pressure cooker with an air-frying lid
Instant Pot’s Duo Crisp 6QT uses interchangeable lids for pressure cooking and air frying. Instant Pot also claims it cooks “up to 70% faster than traditional slow cooking methods”; that figure is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independently measured result across recipes. The two-lid design makes most sense if you expect to use both methods and have room to store the appliance and its parts.
For smaller portions: compare air-fryer usability, not just features
An air fryer may be useful if you often cook or reheat smaller portions. That does not establish that every air fryer is faster than an oven; results depend on the food, amount, and appliance. Usability is a concrete point of comparison: Which? says ease of use makes up 20% of its air-fryer test score, assessing controls, instructions, and access to the food.

When comparing options, consider whether you can operate the controls comfortably, reach food without awkward handling, and cook the portion size you need. These details can determine whether the appliance simplifies a routine or adds another step.

- Name the repeat task. Identify the meal, portion, or prep step that regularly takes effort.
