Yes—Google’s Gemini for Home voice assistant is actively rolling out to compatible Google Nest and Google Home speakers and displays. Basic Gemini for Home features do not require a subscription, but advanced features such as Gemini Live and camera-history search may require Google Home Premium.
Before you request access, note the biggest catch: upgrading happens at the home level. Google says compatible devices in that home switch from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home, and the home cannot be switched back afterward. Check the details carefully before accepting the upgrade.

How to request Gemini for Home early access
- Use a personal Google Account associated with your Google Home setup. Google Workspace accounts are not supported.
- Update the Google Home app to version 4.1 or later.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Home settings, then Early Access.
- Follow the prompts to request Gemini for Home early access.
Requesting access does not necessarily activate Gemini immediately. Google says it will notify you when Gemini for Home becomes available for your home.

How to complete the upgrade after you are invited
When your home is eligible, the Google Home app should show a notification titled “Introducing Gemini for Home.”
- Tap the notification.
- Tap Get started.
- Review the feature information and disclosures.
- Configure voice-assistant settings, response filtering, and related household controls.
- Complete the upgrade.
If you dismissed the notification, open Google Home → profile picture or initial → Home settings. Look for the banner “Set up Gemini for Home for more natural conversations.” Tap Get started and follow the prompts.
How to confirm that Gemini is active
- In Home settings, the assistant should be labelled Gemini for Home voice assistant, rather than Google Assistant.
- Gemini voices use names such as plant or colour names. Google gives Pothos as an example; Red is associated with Google Assistant.
- You can ask the assistant who it is. Google says Gemini for Home should identify itself as a language learning model.
Which devices support Gemini for Home?
Compatibility varies by feature. A device that supports the voice assistant may not support Gemini Live or every camera-related function.
| Device group | Devices | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Complete voice-assistant experience | Google Home Speaker (2026); Nest Hub (2nd generation); Nest Audio; Nest Mini (2nd generation); Nest Hub Max; Nest Hub (1st generation); Google Home Mini (1st generation) | Individual features still depend on region, language, firmware, and plan. |
| Most Gemini for Home features, but not Gemini Live | Nest Wifi point; Google Home Max; original Google Home; compatible third-party speakers | Gemini Live is not supported on these devices. |
Minimum software requirements
- Google Home app: version 4.1 or newer
- Speakers: Cast firmware 3.76 or newer
- Displays: Fuchsia firmware 28 or newer
- Android setup issues: update Speech Recognition & Synthesis if Google prompts you or setup fails
Firmware updates may arrive gradually. Do not assume that joining the separate speaker and display firmware Preview Program will enroll you in Gemini for Home.

What requires Google Home Premium?
| Plan | Gemini-related benefits |
|---|---|
| Premium Standard | Gemini Live on compatible speakers and displays. |
| Premium Advanced | Gemini Live, camera-livestream and video-history search, Home Brief, and other higher-tier camera intelligence. |
Camera-history search requires Premium Advanced, a compatible Nest Camera, and the camera’s Event descriptions feature enabled. Home Brief also requires Advanced.
Google Home Premium is the current name for the Nest Aware subscription family. Google says existing Nest Aware subscribers moved to Google Home Premium Standard, while Nest Aware Plus subscribers moved to Google Home Premium Advanced, without needing to sign up again or redownload the app.

Do not confuse these Google programs
- Gemini for Home voice assistant: replaces Google Assistant on a compatible upgraded home.
- Gemini for Home camera features: includes capabilities such as event descriptions, camera-history search, and Home Brief.
- Gemini mobile app: a separate product with a separate access path. Gemini for Home works independently of Gemini apps.
- Google Home Public Preview: a preview channel for Home app features, not the Gemini early-access sign-up route.
- Speaker/display firmware Preview Program: an early firmware channel, not a Gemini enrollment method. See Google’s Preview Program documentation.
Troubleshooting: why you may not see Gemini
The Early Access option is missing
Check that you are using a personal account, your country and language are supported, Google Groups permits group additions, and the Google Home app is version 4.1 or newer. A Workspace account is a specific blocker, not something reinstalling the app will fix.
You requested access but nothing happened
Early access is an expression of interest, not an instant activation. Google says it will notify you when your home becomes eligible. The rollout began for select existing U.S. users on October 28, 2025 and has expanded gradually to additional markets.
The invitation or upgrade banner is not visible
Update the app and device firmware, confirm that you are looking at the correct home, and check the Home settings screen for the banner “Set up Gemini for Home for more natural conversations.” Eligibility can also depend on the account, country, language, and staged rollout.
Recommended Free Tools
Setup fails on Android
Update Speech Recognition & Synthesis, then retry. Also confirm the Google Home app, Cast firmware, and Fuchsia firmware meet the minimum versions listed above.
Gemini works, but Gemini Live does not
That may be expected. Google lists several older devices as supporting most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live. Live also requires Google Home Premium and a compatible device.

Household, privacy, and accuracy considerations
The change affects everyone using the upgraded home. Review Voice Match, personal results, guest response filtering, parental controls, and child voice-match settings. Google also documents controls for camera-history access, including the possibility that the household manager controls who can search camera history.
Camera summaries can reveal activity in the home to people nearby, so review access before enabling camera-history search. Gemini responses can also be inaccurate. Treat troubleshooting suggestions and camera summaries as useful assistance—not as a substitute for professional advice, emergency services, or checking the underlying footage.

Early access makes sense if you want more natural requests, better-described media discovery, conversational answers, and broader household coordination using hardware you already own. You may not need to buy a new Nest device or subscribe to Premium for those basic functions.
Pause before upgrading if you want to keep Google Assistant, need to test Gemini on only one speaker, share the home with people who may dislike the change, or are uncomfortable with AI-generated answers and camera summaries. The home-wide upgrade and lack of rollback are more important considerations than the “early access” label.
For most existing owners, the sensible order is: check your current device and firmware, request access, try the free features first, and subscribe to Google Home Premium only if you specifically need Gemini Live or the Advanced camera functions.
