Apple’s rumored smart-home camera: What Kuo reported, what Apple confirmed, and whether to wait

Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple could enter the smart-home camera market in 2026, but Apple has not confirmed the hardware. Here’s what is known and whether buyers should wait.

Apple has not officially announced a standalone smart-home camera. The claim comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who reported that Apple was targeting 2026 mass production for a wireless, HomeKit-enabled IP camera. Apple has separately confirmed new AI features for compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras, but those software features do not prove that Apple’s rumored hardware has launched—or that it will include any particular sensor, processor, or recognition capability.

What Kuo actually reported

In November 2024, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple planned to enter the smart-home IP-camera market, with mass production targeted for 2026 and projected annual shipments in the “tens of millions.” MacRumors’ report and 9to5Mac’s coverage both attributed the information to Kuo rather than to an Apple announcement.

A December follow-up described the product as a wireless, HomeKit-enabled camera and connected it with Apple’s broader smart-home strategy. However, no public information establishes its final name, price, release date, design, resolution, power source, subscription policy, or recording capabilities.

As of August 18, 2026, Apple has not listed or formally announced the camera. Kuo’s report is therefore credible industry reporting, not confirmation that the product will ship.

What Apple has confirmed about camera AI

Apple’s June 2026 Apple Intelligence announcement confirms new capabilities for compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras, including:

  • Generated descriptions of activity in recorded clips.
  • Search through camera footage for events such as a package delivery.
  • Surfacing noteworthy clips.
  • Grouping related accessory notifications into a single activity.

These are platform-level features. They do not confirm that an Apple-branded camera will run Apple Intelligence independently, recognize faces, provide continuous conversational monitoring, or use a particular chip. Apple also says availability can vary by device, language, region, and local law; China is excluded from the initial availability described in the announcement.

Apple’s wording also leaves important cost questions open. Apple Intelligence access is associated with compatible devices and iCloud+ plans, while third-party reporting has suggested that some advanced camera features may require the 2TB iCloud+ tier. That plan requirement should not be treated as confirmed for the unreleased camera.

Is the camera the same as a HomePod with a display?

No. The two products are best treated as separate rumors:

Rumored product Possible purpose Current status
Apple smart-home camera Video monitoring and HomeKit integration Reported by Kuo; unannounced
HomePod with a display Smart-home control, Siri, media, and camera-feed viewing Rumored; unannounced
Existing HomeKit cameras Camera monitoring through Apple Home and HomeKit Secure Video Available now from third-party manufacturers

The products could work together, with a display-equipped HomePod showing camera feeds and controlling accessories. But Apple has not confirmed whether the display HomePod will contain a camera, whether the standalone camera will include a speaker, or whether either product will require the other. Reports about a 6–7-inch display or an A18 chip concern the rumored HomePod, not established camera specifications.

How Apple’s current camera system works

Apple already supports compatible third-party cameras through HomeKit Secure Video. A typical setup requires:

  • A compatible Apple home hub, such as a HomePod or Apple TV, for supported HomeKit Secure Video functions.
  • An iCloud+ plan for stored recordings.
  • Reliable Wi-Fi and suitable camera placement.

Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video guidance explains the service requirements. For example, Apple’s Eve Cam listing explicitly requires an Apple home hub and iCloud+.

Privacy is also a matter of separating different functions. Live video, motion analysis, encrypted iCloud recordings, and footage stored in a manufacturer’s cloud are not necessarily handled in the same way. “AI-powered” does not automatically mean that all video stays locally on the camera.

What an Apple camera could improve

A first-party camera could offer a simpler Apple setup, consistent industrial design, tighter Siri and Home app integration, and fewer questions about whether camera firmware supports Apple’s latest features. It might also provide a more unified experience across iPhone, HomePod, Apple TV, and Apple Intelligence.

Those advantages remain possibilities, not specifications. Apple could charge a premium, restrict compatibility with other platforms, or launch a first-generation camera with fewer camera-specific features than established competitors. AI features may be limited by language, geography, device compatibility, or iCloud+ eligibility.

Should you buy now or wait?

Buy now if:

  • You need security coverage immediately.
  • You already own a HomePod or Apple TV and want HomeKit Secure Video today.
  • You need an outdoor camera, battery camera, doorbell, floodlight, or multi-camera system.
  • Your existing camera works with Alexa or Google Home and cross-platform support matters.

Wait if:

  • You specifically want Apple-designed hardware.
  • Your current camera works adequately and there is no urgent security need.
  • You are invested in iCloud+ and Apple Home and value possible Siri or Apple Intelligence integration more than known specifications.
  • You accept that Apple could delay, cancel, reposition, or materially change the product.

The safest conclusion is practical: do not postpone an immediate security need for an unconfirmed product. If you are simply curious about Apple’s first camera and can wait, wait for an official product page rather than buying based on rumored features.

What would make the rumor more concrete?

The strongest confirmation would be an Apple announcement, Apple Store listing, support document naming the product, regulatory filing, dedicated camera firmware, or reliable reporting that specifies launch timing, price, and hardware. Until then, the evidence ladder is straightforward:

  • Confirmed by Apple: AI-enhanced camera features for compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras.
  • Reported by Kuo: An Apple smart-home IP camera targeted for 2026.
  • Reported but unconfirmed: A relationship between the camera and a display-equipped HomePod.
  • Speculation: Price, sensor, resolution, battery life, facial recognition, subscription requirements, and exact launch date.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
