iRobot Already Emerged From Bankruptcy: What It Means for Roomba Owners

iRobot has completed its bankruptcy restructuring, but Roomba owners are not facing an announced mass feature shutdown. The bigger risk is future uncertainty around cloud-dependent features and legacy support.

Short answer: Roomba owners are not facing an announced mass shutdown of app features. iRobot filed for Chapter 11 on December 14, 2025, but completed its restructuring and emerged on January 23, 2026, under new ownership by Shenzhen Picea Robotics and Santrum Hong Kong. iRobot currently says its apps, customer support, applicable software updates, and warranty coverage will continue.

The real issue is longer-term uncertainty. Roomba features that depend on an account, app, cloud service, or voice-assistant integration could become less reliable if a service is changed or retired—especially on older models. That is a risk to monitor, not evidence that your robot is about to become a basic button-operated vacuum.

What happened to iRobot?

The headline that iRobot “faces imminent bankruptcy” is now outdated. The company has already gone through the process.

  • March 12, 2025: iRobot’s board began a strategic review involving possible transactions and debt refinancing. SEC filing
  • December 14, 2025: iRobot and its subsidiaries filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions and entered a restructuring agreement with Picea and Santrum.
  • January 22, 2026: The bankruptcy court confirmed the restructuring plan. Court filing
  • January 23, 2026: The plan took effect. Picea acquired 100% of iRobot’s equity, and iRobot emerged as a privately held company. iRobot announcement

Existing public shares were cancelled under the plan. That matters to investors, but it does not automatically disable customer products. Chapter 11 is generally intended to let a company continue operating while it restructures rather than shutting down immediately.

Picea was already iRobot’s primary contract manufacturer and secured lender. The transaction therefore created a route for the business to continue, rather than representing an immediate liquidation.

What iRobot says customers should expect

In its current customer update, iRobot says existing apps will continue to work, products will continue to receive support and applicable software updates, and warranty coverage will continue. The company also says there are no planned changes affecting app functionality or data security. Read iRobot’s customer update.

Those are current company assurances, not a perpetual guarantee. The wording “software updates where applicable” leaves room for model-specific limits. A new owner can also change development priorities, app architecture, privacy policies, repair arrangements, or the length of legacy support later.

For now, however, there is no announced iRobot plan to shut down the Roomba app or remove almost all features.

Which Roomba features are most vulnerable?

A Roomba is a combination of hardware, firmware, an app, cloud infrastructure, and sometimes third-party services. The exact balance differs by model and generation. The most useful distinction is between functions that can run locally and functions that depend on remote infrastructure.

Functions that are generally more resilient

Depending on the model, these functions are more likely to remain available when the app or internet connection is unavailable:

  • Starting a cleaning cycle with the physical button
  • Basic autonomous vacuuming
  • Docking and charging
  • Navigation routines already stored in the robot’s firmware
  • Vacuuming and, on combination models, some mopping functions
  • Some dock-based functions such as automatic emptying

This is not a guarantee for every Roomba. Hardware condition, battery health, firmware design, and model architecture all matter.

Functions more exposed to app or cloud changes

Feature Likely dependency What to check
Physical clean button Mostly local The model’s manual and current behavior
Scheduled cleaning App, account, and possibly cloud services Whether an existing schedule runs without internet access
Room or zone cleaning Maps plus app or cloud infrastructure The model’s map and room-cleaning support
Maps and no-go zones App, account, cloud, and sometimes onboard storage Whether maps remain available offline
Remote start and stop Internet connection and iRobot services Whether the robot responds when away from home
Voice assistants iRobot plus Alexa, Google Home, or another integration Both services’ current compatibility
Firmware updates iRobot’s update service The model’s support and update policy
Notifications and cleaning history App and cloud infrastructure Whether records are stored locally or remotely
Remote diagnostics Account and support systems Current support availability

iRobot’s product materials describe the ecosystem as involving the robot, iRobot OS, cloud infrastructure, and app-based control. They also describe maps, smart-home integrations, recommendations, and over-the-air digital functionality. Product materials Additional product materials.

That does not mean every smart feature requires the cloud, or that every Roomba will lose it if a server changes. It means the owner’s experience depends partly on services outside the robot itself.

Could the Roomba app be shut down?

There is no announced app shutdown. iRobot’s current public position is that existing apps will continue to work and that there are no planned changes to app functionality.

That statement should be read precisely: it describes the company’s current plans, not indefinite availability. Connected-device owners should distinguish between:

  • What is confirmed: iRobot has completed restructuring and says current apps and support continue.
  • What is possible: Future owners or managers could retire servers, redesign the app, or reduce support for older models.
  • What is not established: A company-wide plan to disable Roomba features or turn existing robots into offline-only devices.

Are older Roombas at greater risk?

Generally, yes—but that is a connected-device risk rather than proof of a specific shutdown.

Older products can be more exposed because their servers may be costly to maintain relative to their user base, their authentication systems may be outdated, and replacement batteries or parts may be harder to find. New app features may not be backported, and older Wi-Fi hardware may have difficulty with modern routers.

There is no verified company-wide announcement in the supplied evidence that the Roomba 900 series or another named family has been discontinued because of the restructuring. Individual Reddit reports about older robots going offline are useful signals for troubleshooting, but they are anecdotal and should not be treated as proof of an official service retirement. If an older Roomba stops appearing online, test the model and feature separately. A robot that cleans from its physical button but cannot accept a remote command may have a Wi-Fi, account, app, or cloud problem—not necessarily a bankruptcy-related shutdown.

What current Roomba owners should do

  1. Identify the exact model. Check the iRobot app, the label on the robot, or the area beneath the dust bin.
  2. Save important information. Keep purchase receipts, warranty records, order numbers, and the model’s support page.
  3. Record maps and schedules. Photograph them or use any export option the current app provides. Do not assume every model offers an export function.
  4. Keep firmware current while official updates remain available.
  5. Test the physical controls. Confirm that the robot can start cleaning and return to its dock without relying on the app.
  6. Test Wi-Fi methodically. After a router change or reset, check the network, account, app version, and pairing process before concluding that iRobot’s servers are unavailable.
  7. Avoid an unnecessary factory reset. Re-pairing a legacy robot may require a functioning account or cloud service. Do not reset a working device without checking the official instructions first.
  8. Treat integrations separately. If voice control fails, the problem could be Alexa, Google Home, or the integration layer rather than the Roomba itself.
  9. Buy legitimate replacement parts. Batteries, filters, bags, brushes, and mop supplies may become the practical limit on a robot’s useful life even if its servers remain online.

What happens to warranties and repairs?

iRobot currently says warranty coverage and customer service will continue. That does not mean every repair centre, part, or service arrangement is guaranteed permanently.

Warranty terms vary by country, retailer, product, and purchase date. A retailer’s return period is also separate from the manufacturer’s warranty. Save proof of purchase and contact iRobot support before attempting a repair that could affect warranty eligibility.

What does the new ownership mean for privacy?

Shenzhen Picea Robotics is iRobot’s new owner. In its January 2026 announcement, iRobot said it created a separate U.S.-based subsidiary, iRobot Safe Corporation, with an independent board and U.S.-based data-security leadership intended to protect U.S. and other consumer data.

Those are announced governance measures and intentions, not an independent privacy certification. Owners should still read the current iRobot privacy policy and check what their particular model collects.

Camera-equipped or object-recognition models deserve more scrutiny than simpler robots. Readers should distinguish among where data is processed, where it is stored, who controls the service, and what legal or governmental access may apply. New ownership alone does not prove that customer data is being sent to China or misused.

Should you keep your Roomba?

Keep using it if:

  • It cleans reliably and the app still works.
  • Replacement parts are reasonably available.
  • You value your existing maps, routines, accessories, and setup.
  • The physical controls provide a useful fallback.
  • You do not need the newest mopping, obstacle-avoidance, or dock features.

Consider replacing it if:

  • It already has repeated pairing or cloud failures.
  • You cannot tolerate losing remote control, schedules, or maps.
  • The battery, navigation hardware, or dock is failing.
  • Repair and parts costs approach the price of a newer robot.
  • You want advanced mopping or a self-maintaining dock.

Bankruptcy by itself is not a reason to discard a working Roomba.

  • GREAT FOR HOMES WITH PETS. Tangle‑free rubber brushes capture pet fur without clogging, eliminating constant stops to cut hair off the brush.
  • EVERY CLEAN STARTS WITH A FRESH MOP—NOT YESTERDAY’S DIRT. The AutoWash Dock washes and heat‑dries mop pads at 113°F after every run, preventing odors and buildup so floors aren’t cleaned with yesterday’s dirt.

Should you buy a Roomba now?

A current Roomba is not an automatic bad purchase because iRobot has changed ownership. The sensible question is whether the model’s current price, warranty, parts supply, and locally usable functions justify accepting some long-term service uncertainty.

Before buying, identify whether it uses the current Roomba Home app or a legacy app. Check the model-specific support page and warranty terms, confirm what can be done from physical controls, and use a retailer with a clear return policy. Avoid paying flagship prices for an old clearance model unless the discount compensates for its potentially shorter support life.

As of August 18, 2026, iRobot’s U.S. store listed models including the Roomba 105 Vac with AutoEmpty Dock at $249.99, the Roomba Max 715 at $699.99, and the Roomba Combo 10 Max at $1,399.99. Prices, stock, and promotions can change. Check the current official range.

Alternatives for buyers worried about cloud dependence

No connected robot guarantees permanent app support. The useful comparison is how much of its value remains available when the account, app, or cloud is unavailable.

  • eufy: Its manufacturer says certain cited products support maps, schedules, no-go zones, and room cleaning without a cloud subscription because maps and schedules are stored on the robot. Verify that claim for the exact model. eufy robot vacuums
  • Dreame: Offers a broad U.S. range of premium vacuum-and-mop systems. Check model-specific app, privacy, warranty, and parts terms. Dreame U.S. shop
  • Narwal: Focuses on premium vacuum-and-mop automation and dock-based maintenance. Verify the particular model’s support and repair arrangements. Narwal U.S. collection

Compare total ownership cost—not just suction claims or the robot’s sale price. Include batteries, bags, filters, mop pads, cleaning solution, dock maintenance, warranty coverage, and likely parts availability.

The bottom line

iRobot is no longer merely “facing” bankruptcy: it filed, completed the court-supervised transaction, and emerged under new ownership. There is no evidence of an announced mass loss of Roomba features, and iRobot currently says its apps, support, applicable updates, and warranties continue.

The prudent concern is cloud dependence over the long term. Keep a working Roomba, document your model and settings, avoid unnecessary factory resets, and verify model-specific support before buying or replacing one. If you are shopping now, choose based on warranty, parts, local functionality, and support terms—not bankruptcy headlines alone.
