GE oven error code F96 does not point to one universal replacement part. GE’s general code guide says it usually means an internal component needs replacement, but the exact meaning depends on the oven model. On one model-specific service sheet, F96 means the oven door was detected open during self-clean. You can try a brief power reset; if the code returns, identify the full model number and arrange qualified service rather than ordering a part from the code alone.
What does F96 mean on a GE oven?
GE’s general range and wall-oven error code guide says F96 “usually means that an internal component needs to be replaced.” It does not identify the component, and GE cautions that the guide does not cover every code for every past and present model.
A separate model-specific service data sheet assigns F96 a narrower meaning: the oven door was detected open during a self-clean cycle. That applies to the oven design covered by that sheet, not automatically to every GE oven. The general guide and the service sheet describe different levels of detail, so neither supports diagnosing a universal F96 part such as a fan, control board, or door switch.
How to reset a GE oven showing F96
- Record the full model number from the oven’s rating label. Note whether F96 appeared during or after self-clean; this context can help with model-specific diagnosis.
- If it is safe to leave the appliance without power, switch off the circuit breaker or fuse supplying the oven for one or two minutes.
- Restore power and check whether the code has cleared.
- If F96 returns or the control does not reset, stop treating the reset as a repair and arrange service.
GE says cutting power for a minute or two sometimes clears a range or wall-oven error code; a reset does not establish that the underlying fault has been repaired. See GE’s error-code guidance and range and wall-oven FAQs, which recommend diagnosis by trained Bodewell service technicians for fault codes.

Why the exact model matters
GE’s cooking-product support page offers model-specific support, and some cooking products have a QR code on the model and serial tag that can direct owners to information for that product. Use the full model number when consulting support or booking service; “GE oven” and F96 alone are not enough to confirm which diagnostic procedure applies.
What a technician checks on the service-sheet model
Only if the oven matches the cited service data sheet, its F96 troubleshooting path concerns the door-switch circuit during self-clean:

- The GE Appliances Control Board and Clock is a genuine OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) part designed and engineered to exact specifications
- GE Appliances Control Board and Clock monitors the temperature and controls the oven heat
- GE Appliances WB27K10356 has an electronic clock/timer display
- The high quality GE Appliances Control Board and Clock replaces WB27K10243, WB27K10337
- Repair your appliance with confidence when you choose factory certified GE Appliances Parts & Accessories
- Confirm that the door closes fully and presses the door-switch plunger.
- Check the door-switch wiring and test the switch for continuity.
- Replace the switch if it is defective.
- If the switch and wiring are sound but F96 remains, the service sheet directs the technician to consider the oven relay board.
These are technician diagnostic steps, not a general instruction to dismantle an oven or replace parts based on the code. The service sheet’s switch and relay-board checks should not be applied to a different model without confirming its service information.

Not from the code alone. GE’s general guide does not specify a part, and the door switch or relay board appear only in the diagnostic path for the particular oven design covered by the service sheet. Have the fault confirmed and match any replacement part to the full model number and diagnosis before purchasing.
