If your GE electric cooktop will not turn on, a burner will not heat, or the touch controls beep, start with the full model number and its matching owner’s manual. GE cooktops use different controls and heating systems, so a check that applies to an induction model may not apply to a radiant glass or coil model. Keep troubleshooting to simple, manual-approved checks; do not open the cooktop or work on live wiring.
Identify your cooktop before troubleshooting
Find the complete model number on the appliance and use it to locate the matching manual through GE Appliances support. Confirm whether your cooktop is radiant glass, coil, modular, or induction, and follow the instructions for that exact model. For example, GE lists the PP912BMBB as a 30-inch built-in electric cooktop manufactured from February 2007 through March 2015; those dates describe that model only, not GE cooktops generally. GE cooktop will not turn on or the display is off
Check the controls and lock state
Make sure the cooktop is not locked and that you are using the correct control for the desired surface unit. On the induction touch-control model covered by GE manual 49-8269, the specified unlock procedure is to press Control Lock twice within three seconds. Other models may have a different control layout or sequence, so do not assume this procedure applies to yours. Consult the matching GE induction manual.
Check household power safely
A tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse can leave a cooktop or its surface units inoperative. If appropriate for your home and the manual’s instructions, you may reset the household breaker once. GE’s reviewed induction manual also describes switching the breaker off and back on as a reset for that model. If the breaker trips again, or a fuse repeatedly blows, stop and arrange qualified service; do not open the appliance, remove panels, or test wiring. The reset sequence is not a universal instruction for every GE cooktop.

One burner does not heat, or heating seems slow
Verify the selected control and cookware
Confirm that you selected the control for the intended burner. On radiant glass models, GE advises using a flat pan appropriately sized for the selected surface unit; flat cookware makes better contact and transfers heat more effectively. For induction cooktops, the pan must also be induction-compatible, which generally means magnetic. An undersized or off-center pan can interfere with operation on some induction models. These induction-specific checks do not describe conventional radiant or coil burners. See GE’s glass cooktop manual and the induction manual.
Check a modular element only if the manual permits it
Some older modular cooktops require a removable module or element to be fully seated. Inspect or reseat one only if your own manual describes that user procedure, and only when the surface is cool. GE’s guidance on modules applies to the matching older designs, not to every electric cooktop. If the control and cookware checks do not resolve the problem, arrange service rather than attempting an internal repair. See GE manual 49-8258.

Touch controls flash or beep
For the induction model described in GE manual 49-8269, possible causes include removing the pan while cooking, a hot glass surface, a pan that is too small or off-center, or cookware that is not magnetic. Center a compatible pan on the cooking area and let an overheated surface cool before trying again. Check the model’s manual for the meaning of its specific indicators or sounds; these explanations should not be assumed for radiant or coil models.
Cracked glass or signs of electrical damage
If the glass cooktop is cracked, turn off the circuit breaker and call for service, as GE directs in its reviewed manual. Do not cook on the damaged surface or attempt to repair the glass. Stop using the appliance and arrange qualified service as well if you see electrical damage or notice a burning smell, or if a breaker trips again or a fuse fails repeatedly. Do not bypass safety controls or work on live wiring.

Marks, scratches, and glass-top care
GE’s glass cooktop manual identifies rough cookware bottoms, particles trapped between the pan and glass, and sliding cookware across the surface as possible sources of scratches. Use clean cookware with smooth bottoms, lift pans instead of sliding them, and follow the cleaning method in the manual for your model. For sugary spills, follow that manual’s prompt-removal instructions: GE warns that sugar mixtures can permanently damage the glass if they are not removed immediately.
GE manual 49-80091 lists Cerama Bryte cream (WX10X300), a razor scraper (WX5X1614), and kit WB64X5027 for the glass-top models it covers. Treat these as maintenance products, not remedies for a burner or electrical failure; verify current availability and compatibility with your cooktop before use.

When to stop troubleshooting and call for service
Keep home checks to the controls, pan placement and compatibility, care instructions, and household circuit protection described in the matching manual. Do not remove appliance panels, replace internal wiring, test live connections, or bypass a safety feature. Contact qualified appliance service if the glass is cracked, power protection fails repeatedly, there is visible electrical damage or a burning smell, or the problem remains after the manual-approved checks. GE’s cooktop troubleshooting and support directs owners to model-specific manuals and service support.
