Crows can help a garden by eating insects and carrion, but they may also eat crops, disturb seedlings, or dig turf while searching for food. Whether they are helpful or a nuisance depends on what they are feeding on in your yard. Identify the damage first, then reduce accessible food and protect the specific plants at risk.
What crows eat—and how they can help
Crows are opportunistic omnivores. Depending on what is available, their food can include insects, carrion, earthworms, fruit, nuts, vegetables, seeds, garbage, and pet food. The Government of Alberta notes that crows and magpies eat insects and carrion. Penn State Extension likewise lists insects, including pest species, among a varied diet.
Those habits can benefit a garden, but they do not guarantee a net benefit in every yard. A crow eating insects may also be taking fruit or newly planted seeds nearby.
What damage might crows cause?
Fruit, vegetables, and seeds
American crows may eat cultivated fruits, nuts, vegetables, and seeds. They can pull up newly planted seeds or disturb tender young plants. In an Oregon State University Extension response dated June 30, 2025, Dr. Dana Sanchez noted that crows may watch gardeners and visit early in the morning to feed on newly planted seeds or young plants: Ask Extension’s answer about plants pulled up by crows.

Digging in lawns and beds
Crows may tear up turf while searching for invertebrates, including grubs. Nebraska Extension describes both seedling damage and turf disturbance, while also warning that other wildlife can cause similar problems (University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension). A dug-up lawn alone does not prove that crows—or a particular lawn pest—are responsible.
How to tell whether crows are the cause
Before choosing a deterrent, look for the birds or other signs around the damaged area. Note when the damage appears, what is affected, and whether seeds or plants have been pulled up, fruit has been eaten, or turf has been disturbed. Crows are not active overnight, according to Sanchez’s 2025 Extension response, so damage discovered in the morning may have occurred earlier than it appears—but another animal may still be responsible.

How to protect a garden from crows
- Remove easy food. Secure garbage lids, put bins out closer to collection time, and avoid leaving food or pet food accessible. This can reduce one source of attraction, but it cannot control wild food sources or distant roosts. Neighbors’ food waste may also affect what is available nearby. Oregon State Extension discusses these steps in its advice on annoying crows and encouraging small birds while discouraging crows.
- Exclude birds from the vulnerable crop. For fruit shrubs or trees, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources recommends bird netting with 4-inch mesh, tied at the base of the plant. Netting is available from hardware stores, garden centers, and farm-supply stores (Indiana DNR’s American crow guidance). For a newly planted bed, Oregon State Extension suggests caging it or using a daytime motion-detection sprinkler; a sprinkler needs a hose and careful positioning.
- Use scare devices as a trial, not a guarantee. Reflective material, eye-spot balloons, and sound tactics may provide temporary relief, but crows can become accustomed to devices or noises that do not signal a real threat. Position them so they do not create a nuisance for neighbors or passers-by.
- Seek local advice for persistent problems. If the nuisance is extensive or continues despite targeted steps, contact local wildlife authorities or a qualified wildlife-control professional. Rules and available services vary by location.
Which response fits the problem?
| Problem | Practical first response | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Accessible garbage, food, or pet food | Secure lids and remove food left outdoors. | Reduces access to that food source; does not address crop damage or roost noise by itself. |
| Fruit being eaten | Cover the shrub or tree with bird netting secured at the base. | Indiana DNR recommends 4-inch mesh; check that netting is secured around the plant. |
| New seeds or tender plants disturbed | Cage the bed or try a daytime motion-detection sprinkler. | Extension advice for a reported seedling problem, not a guaranteed fix for every yard. |
| Scattered lawn digging | Observe the area and confirm the likely animal before acting. | Crows may search for invertebrates, but other wildlife can cause similar damage. |
When crows become a wider nuisance
A garden deterrent may not resolve noise or other problems associated with a larger roost. Penn State Extension’s guidance addresses urban crow roosts in Pennsylvania and the Northeast; local wildlife authorities can advise what options are appropriate in your area. Wildlife rules and services differ by jurisdiction, so do not assume that a method permitted elsewhere is allowed locally.
