FusionFlight ARC: The Toolbox-Sized Microturbine Generator That Trades Quiet Operation for Power Density

FusionFlight’s ARC packs roughly 10 kW of DC generation into a toolbox-sized microturbine. Here are its current specifications, fuel and heat demands, noise, price, and real-world trade-offs.

FusionFlight’s ARC is not a conventional portable generator. It is a compact, heavy-fuel microturbine designed to deliver roughly 10 kW of electrical power in a package small and light enough for aerospace, robotics, vehicle, marine, and other weight-sensitive applications. The current enclosed version is listed at 10.7 kg and 20 × 11 × 7 inches, with a starting price of $19,995.

That extraordinary power-to-weight ratio comes with serious compromises: the ARC produces rectified DC rather than ordinary household AC, reaches extremely high turbine speeds, exhausts at about 650°C, consumes substantial fuel at peak output, requires specialist integration, and is listed by its manufacturer at up to 95 dB. It is better understood as an industrial power component or hybrid range extender than as a camping or jobsite generator.

What is the FusionFlight ARC?

The ARC is a microturbine generator whose prime mover is a miniature jet engine. Instead of using a conventional piston engine connected to an alternator, it uses a small turbine spinning at up to 140,000 rpm to generate electricity.

FusionFlight’s current product materials describe the ARC as a 10-kWe turbo generator running on heavy fuels such as diesel, biodiesel, Jet-A, and kerosene. The company offers two principal physical configurations:

Configuration Listed weight Listed dimensions Typical purpose
Enclosed 10.7 kg 20 × 11 × 7 in Protected installation and general integration
Open-frame aircraft integration 7.7 kg 19 × 10 × 6 in Weight-sensitive aircraft or specialist installations

The open-frame version is especially light, but its lower weight should not be confused with a complete, ready-to-use power system. Fuel storage, fuel lines, controls, exhaust treatment, electrical conversion, cooling, mounting, guarding, and safety equipment may all be part of the final installation.

From an 8-kW prototype to a current 10-kWe product family

The ARC attracted attention in 2022 when it was reported as an approximately 8-kW generator weighing just under 9 kg and occupying roughly toolbox-sized dimensions. At that stage, the system was described as producing adjustable-voltage output without an integral inverter, meaning that conventional AC loads required separate power electronics.

FusionFlight’s current materials describe a more developed and configurable product family. Current options include low-, medium-, and high-voltage versions, with custom winding choices for application-specific DC requirements. The company lists a standard low-voltage configuration optimized around 65 VDC at 150 A and a high-voltage configuration optimized around 650 VDC at 15 A.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That change matters. The headline “10-kW generator” does not tell an installer whether the unit can connect directly to a battery pack, motor controller, inverter, vehicle electrical bus, or building load. Voltage, current, grounding, isolation, waveform, startup behavior, protection, and power-conversion requirements must be matched to the particular ARC build.

Current electrical specifications

The current high-voltage specification sheet identifies the ARC as a peak-rated microturbine generator with filtered and rectified DC output. Its listed figures include:

  • Electrical output: 9.5 kWe peak on the high-voltage specification sheet; FusionFlight’s product page describes the family as a 10-kWe turbo generator.
  • Output range: 250–750 VDC.
  • Maximum current: 150 A.
  • Turbine speed: 140,000 rpm.
  • Startup time: approximately 30 seconds.
  • Maintenance interval: 50 hours.
  • Listed turbine lifetime: 1,000 hours.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. “Peak” output should also not be interpreted as an assurance that every load can receive the maximum figure continuously under every temperature, altitude, fuel, or installation condition.

Why the ARC is interesting for construction and industrial work

For a construction company, the ARC’s attraction is not that it replaces every portable generator. Its attraction is the amount of power potentially available from a very small and light prime mover.

A conventional 8- or 10-kW petrol generator may be easier to buy, fuel, service, and connect to ordinary tools. It will generally be the more practical choice for routine site work, temporary lighting, small pumps, and standard 120- or 240-volt AC equipment. The ARC becomes more interesting where one or more of these constraints dominate:

  • equipment must be lifted by a drone, aircraft, robot, or small vehicle;
  • available installation volume is severely limited;
  • fuel energy density and rapid refueling matter more than quiet operation;
  • the load already uses a high-voltage DC bus;
  • the generator is part of a designed hybrid propulsion or emergency-power system;
  • multiple units can be operated in parallel to scale output.

On a normal building site, however, the ARC’s small footprint does not eliminate the need for a properly engineered power installation. A compact generator can still create large hazards if its exhaust, fuel, heat, electrical output, or noise are not controlled.

It produces DC, not plug-and-play household AC

This is the most important point for anyone comparing the ARC with a familiar portable generator.

The documented ARC output is filtered and rectified DC. It is not described as a built-in source of ordinary 120-volt or 230-volt AC. To run conventional tools or appliances, an installation would need suitable power electronics, and the correct equipment depends on the selected ARC voltage and the load.

A generic inverter should not be selected from its wattage label alone. The integration may require consideration of:

  • the ARC’s actual DC voltage range and maximum current;
  • continuous versus peak load requirements;
  • DC isolation and grounding;
  • overcurrent and short-circuit protection;
  • inverter input limits and allowable voltage transients;
  • battery buffering or an intermediate DC bus;
  • cooling and enclosure requirements;
  • emergency shutdown and fault monitoring;
  • the required AC voltage, frequency, waveform, and phase arrangement.

For that reason, the ARC should be treated as a system-integration project, not as a generator to which a randomly selected consumer inverter can safely be attached. Custom DC power conversion and integration may be necessary for vehicles, aircraft, batteries, industrial equipment, or AC loads.

Fuel, consumption, and heat

The current product information lists diesel, biodiesel, Jet-A, and kerosene among the compatible heavy fuels. The high-voltage specification sheet refers to heavy kerosene-grade fuels including kerosene, diesel, and Jet-A.

Earlier reporting said that the turbine used diesel, kerosene, or jet fuel with 5 percent turbo oil mixed in. That older oil-mixing statement should not be assumed to apply to every current ARC configuration. Fuel formulation, lubrication requirements, and operating procedures can vary by generation and build, so the purchaser should obtain the applicable current instructions directly from FusionFlight.

The high-voltage sheet lists peak fuel consumption of 0.08 US gallons per minute, or approximately 0.3 litres per minute. That works out to about 18 litres per hour at peak power. Actual consumption away from peak output may differ, but the published figure shows why fuel capacity and refueling logistics are not minor details.

The same sheet lists an exhaust temperature of approximately 650°C. That creates obvious requirements for exhaust routing, shielding, clearance from combustible materials, ventilation, fire protection, and protection against contact burns. A toolbox-sized enclosure does not make the exhaust harmless.

How loud is it?

Early coverage described the ARC as deafening but did not include an ARC noise measurement. It referenced a separate test of an older JetCat P80 turbine that reached 116.5 dB. That was not an ARC test and should not be used as the ARC’s noise rating.

FusionFlight’s current high-voltage specification sheet lists a maximum noise level of 95 dB. The reviewed material does not specify the measurement distance, frequency weighting, operating condition, or test method. The figure should therefore be treated as a manufacturer-listed maximum, not as a directly comparable consumer-generator noise rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Either way, hearing protection is a sensible part of an operating procedure. NIOSH identifies repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA as hazardous and recommends hearing protection where noise cannot be adequately reduced through engineering or administrative controls. Anyone working around a turbine should select and fit hearing protection earmuffs based on the actual measured exposure, distance, operating duration, and the protection’s rating. Consumer hearing protection is not a substitute for acoustic barriers, remote operation, equipment maintenance, or a site noise assessment.

Earplugs may provide a secondary layer or a practical alternative in some circumstances. NIOSH discusses double protection—earplugs worn with earmuffs—for exposures of 100 dBA or more or for impulse sounds. The ARC’s published 95 dB maximum does not, by itself, prove that double protection is required for every operating condition; the decision should follow the measured exposure and the site’s safety procedures.

Power density versus a conventional generator

The original 2022 comparison placed an approximately 9-kg ARC beside a 107-kg Gensafe GF8000 petrol generator. That comparison illustrates the ARC’s remarkable power density, but it is not a like-for-like system comparison: a conventional generator may include its alternator, inverter, controls, fuel system, frame, outlets, and other equipment that an aircraft-integrated ARC installation may provide separately.

FusionFlight currently claims that the ARC is more than ten times lighter and four times smaller than a piston-based generator with the same output. That is a company comparison rather than an independently verified benchmark. The practical question is not simply “How much does the turbine weigh?” It is “How much does the complete installed power system weigh and occupy?”

Once the fuel tank, fuel, exhaust, electrical conversion, battery buffering, mounting, guards, cooling, controls, and safety systems are included, the system-level advantage may be smaller than the bare-unit figures suggest. It may still be decisive in an aircraft or drone, where every kilogram has an operational cost.

Why hybrid drones are a natural application

The ARC’s strongest rationale is hybrid propulsion. In this arrangement, the turbine does not necessarily drive the propellers directly. It generates electricity while batteries supply or buffer power for electric motors. Fuel can be replenished or consumed during operation, potentially extending endurance beyond what a battery-only aircraft of the same takeoff mass could achieve.

FusionFlight’s current case study models an ARC-powered DJI FlyCart 30 configuration at the same 95-kg takeoff weight as a dual-battery configuration. The company calculates 25 minutes for the battery-only setup and 90 minutes for the ARC-plus-diesel setup—3.6 times longer.

The same concept could apply to robots, ground vehicles, and marine vessels. FusionFlight also describes the ARC as suitable for engine or turbine starting, emergency power, and parallel operation when additional output is required. Those applications remain design-dependent: the unit must be integrated with compatible controls, fuel systems, power electronics, mounting, thermal management, and protection.

The trade-offs in plain terms

Potential advantage Cost or limitation
Very high power relative to bare-unit weight The complete installation adds fuel, conversion, cooling, exhaust, mounting, and safety equipment.
Compact dimensions Small size does not remove clearance, ventilation, fire, or heat-management requirements.
Heavy-fuel compatibility Fuel handling, storage, filtration, quality, and configuration-specific operating instructions matter.
Potentially useful for hybrid vehicles and drones Integration requires specialist DC power and control engineering.
Parallel operation is advertised Synchronisation, protection, current sharing, and system controls must be engineered.
Fast startup listed at about 30 seconds It is not an instant, plug-in backup source, and startup behavior must suit the load.
Small turbine architecture High noise, hot exhaust, frequent listed maintenance, and a listed 1,000-hour turbine lifetime.

Maintenance and operating life

The current high-voltage sheet lists a 50-hour maintenance interval and a 1,000-hour turbine lifetime. Those figures are particularly important in commercial planning. A unit that operates for extended periods may reach its stated maintenance interval quickly, and the cost and availability of specialist service should be included in any lifecycle comparison with a piston generator.

Operators should also plan for inspection of fuel lines, filters, electrical connectors, exhaust components, mounting hardware, thermal shielding, intake paths, and protective guards. The exact maintenance schedule and replacement criteria should come from the applicable FusionFlight documentation for the purchased configuration.

Price and availability

FusionFlight’s current product page lists a starting price of $19,995. It also states that the product ships worldwide while displaying an “Out of Stock” status. Those details can change, and the listing does not establish that a unit is immediately orderable through ordinary retail channels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The price should therefore be read as a starting product price, not the delivered cost of a complete working system. Buyers may also need to budget for shipping, fuel infrastructure, power conversion, batteries, exhaust and thermal management, controls, installation, commissioning, training, and ongoing maintenance.

Who should—and should not—consider the ARC?

It may make sense for:

  • UAV and aircraft developers prioritising endurance and payload mass;
  • robotics and autonomous-vehicle integrators;
  • marine or ground platforms with a suitable DC electrical architecture;
  • industrial users needing a compact high-power prime mover;
  • specialist emergency-power or remote-power systems;
  • engineers able to design the fuel, exhaust, thermal, electrical, and control integration.

It is probably the wrong choice for:

  • homeowners seeking a conventional backup generator;
  • construction crews wanting immediate AC outlets for standard tools;
  • campers or event operators prioritising quiet operation;
  • buyers who cannot provide controlled exhaust and fuel handling;
  • anyone expecting a generic inverter to make the system plug-and-play;
  • users who lack access to turbine maintenance and high-voltage electrical expertise.

A practical evaluation checklist

  1. Define the load. Record voltage, current, starting surge, continuous power, duty cycle, and whether the load is AC or DC.
  2. Confirm the ARC configuration. Obtain the actual voltage variant, output limits, wiring information, grounding requirements, and control interface.
  3. Calculate complete system mass. Include fuel, tank, lines, filters, exhaust, inverter or converter, batteries, frame, guards, cooling, and safety equipment.
  4. Design the thermal and exhaust system. Account for the listed 650°C exhaust temperature, combustible materials, ventilation, hot surfaces, and fire response.
  5. Assess noise at the operating position. Do not rely solely on the 95 dB maximum; identify the measurement conditions and determine hearing-protection and site-control requirements.
  6. Plan fuel logistics. Confirm the approved fuel and any configuration-specific lubrication or additive requirements with the manufacturer.
  7. Plan service intervals. Include the listed 50-hour maintenance interval, the stated 1,000-hour turbine lifetime, spares, and specialist support.
  8. Verify legal and operational requirements. Aircraft, drone, marine, vehicle, workplace, fuel-storage, emissions, and electrical rules may apply depending on the installation and jurisdiction.
  9. Compare it with the complete alternative. A conventional generator may have lower purchase cost and simpler AC integration even if its bare weight and volume are much greater.

Bottom line

The FusionFlight ARC is impressive because it attacks a real engineering problem: how to generate useful electrical power when weight and volume are more valuable than silence, simplicity, or low purchase cost.

Its current specification is best summarised as a roughly 10-kW-class, heavy-fuel, toolbox-sized microturbine with filtered and rectified DC output. It may be highly valuable as a hybrid range extender or specialist power module, particularly for drones and other mobile platforms. It is not a conventional AC generator, not a casual jobsite purchase, and not a complete power solution by itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the FusionFlight ARC really an 8-kW generator?

The early 2022 version was reported as an approximately 8-kW unit. Current FusionFlight materials describe the ARC family as a 10-kWe turbo generator, while the current high-voltage sheet lists a 9.5-kWe peak electrical rating. These figures are manufacturer specifications and should not be treated as an independent benchmark.

Does the ARC produce normal household AC power?

No. The documented current output is filtered and rectified DC, with voltage determined by the selected configuration. Conventional AC loads require appropriately engineered power electronics; a generic inverter should not be assumed compatible.

How loud is the ARC?

FusionFlight’s current high-voltage specification sheet lists a maximum noise level of 95 dB. The document reviewed does not state the measurement distance, weighting, test method, or operating condition, so it should not be compared directly with consumer-generator ratings. Earlier reporting’s 116.5 dB figure was from a different JetCat P80 turbine, not the ARC.

What fuel does the ARC use?

Current materials list diesel, biodiesel, Jet-A, and kerosene or other heavy kerosene-grade fuels, depending on the document and configuration. Earlier reporting mentioned mixing turbo oil with fuel, but that should be confirmed with FusionFlight for the specific current build rather than treated as a universal requirement.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

How much does the FusionFlight ARC cost?

FusionFlight currently lists a starting price of $19,995. Its product page also displays the unit as out of stock, so the price does not indicate immediate retail availability. A complete installed system would cost more once fuel, exhaust, power conversion, mounting, controls, and safety equipment are included.

Is the ARC suitable for a construction site?

It could be suitable for a specialist engineered application, but it is unlikely to be the practical choice for ordinary site tools and temporary AC power. Its DC output, hot exhaust, high noise, fuel requirements, maintenance schedule, and integration demands make a conventional generator simpler for most construction work.

The Bottom Line

The ARC is a specialist microturbine power module, not a plug-and-play portable generator. Its exceptional size and weight are compelling for hybrid drones, vehicles, robotics, and other engineered systems, but construction users should account for DC-only output, specialist power conversion, 650°C exhaust, up to 95 dB of manufacturer-listed noise, fuel consumption of about 18 L/h at peak output, 50-hour maintenance intervals, and a starting price of $19,995.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
