Lightweight fabric trails behind the moving hands, creating the floating effect. There is no universal blueprint: choose a build plan, then match its motor, crank, frame, lines, and ghost weight to one another.
How a Flying Crank Ghost works
The head hangs from a fixed support line. Two lines connect the hands to opposite throws on a rotating crank. As the crank turns, one hand rises while the other drops. The motor turns the crank; it does not directly move or touch the ghost. Gauzy cloth draped over the head and hands lags behind their movement, making the figure appear to swim or float. Hallowmix’s September 27, 2026 build guide describes this arrangement.
Spookyblue credits special-effects enthusiast Doug Ferguson with developing the prop. The design spread among Halloween builders, who have since published different ways to construct it. Spookyblue’s project notes also describe a tall build whose 3/4-inch PVC frame proved too flexible for that particular design; it is a reminder to consider bracing, dimensions, and load, not proof that PVC cannot work in any build.
Choose a build approach before buying parts
Plans differ in their materials, frame, and drive arrangement, so treat their specifications as a matched set rather than a universal parts list.

| Approach | What the cited design uses | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Simple overhead-frame example | Hallowmix describes a stable overhead mount, a rotisserie or DC gear motor, opposed 4-inch plywood crank arms, a fixed head line, two hand lines, light head and hand forms, and cheesecloth. With its 4-inch arms, each hand travels about 8 inches from bottom to top. | Those dimensions and materials belong to that example. Its horizontal crank shaft makes the arms turn in a vertical circle; the line positions place the hands from below shoulder level to around head height. |
| Aluminum framework project | Make: describes aluminum angle, a motor, crank, pulleys, cord, and hardware. Its parts list gives a 4–7 rpm motor as an example. | The project relates crank length and motor torque to friction and ghost weight. Its wiring includes mains-voltage components and carries a warning that electricity can kill; do not treat it as casual wiring work. |
These are different designs, not competing specifications for one standard ghost. If you compare a self-build with a dedicated mechanism or complete kit, check what is actually included, motor and speed-control configuration, mounting needs, adjustability, price, and current stock. Retail listings can change; the cited complete-kit page displayed sold-out status when indexed.
What materials and motor should you use?
- Fabric: Lightweight white cotton cheesecloth is specified by Hallowmix; Make: also discusses fishing line and lightweight construction materials. Similar gauzy fabric can create the trailing effect, but keep it clear of heat and moving parts.
- Motor: Hallowmix’s simple build uses a rotisserie motor or DC gear motor. Make: lists a 4–7 rpm motor example. Neither choice is a universal requirement: select a motor suited to your chosen crank, friction, frame, and ghost load.
- Moving lines: Use strong cord or fishing line. Hallowmix names 20 lb monofilament for its example; that figure is not a general load rating for every build.
- Head and hands: Use lightweight foam or plastic forms. The specific shapes and materials vary by plan.
- Frame and crank: Use the stock and mounting hardware specified for the selected design; some plans also use pulleys. Keep the support rigid enough for its span and moving load.
For a simple purchasing search, “white cotton cheesecloth” matches the material named in the build guides; this is a generic material description, not a tested brand recommendation. Dedicated mechanisms and kits are also marketed by FrightProps and Hallucinations Creations. Verify current availability and configuration directly with the seller.

Build and adjust the mechanism
- Choose one plan and size the structure. Determine the ghost’s height and weight, where the head support and crank will sit, and how the frame will be secured. Do not assume a frame that worked in a different build is stiff enough for yours.
- Mount the motor and crank securely. Follow the chosen plan’s orientation. In Hallowmix’s example, the crank shaft is horizontal and the arms rotate vertically. Keep the motor and rotating parts inaccessible to visitors.
- Hang the head and connect both hands. The head uses a fixed line; separate lines connect the hands to opposite crank throws. Set line lengths and hand positions according to the selected design.
- Add the light forms and fabric. Drape the cloth so it follows the movement without reaching the crank, shaft, or other moving parts.
- Test several full turns before decorating the area. Watch for a line snagging or cloth wrapping around the rod. Trim fabric or line that reaches moving parts, and adjust the setup before running it again.
- Unplug before making adjustments. Do not touch the crank, lines, or fabric while the drive is powered.
Electrical and fire safety
Keep decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters, and keep exits clear. The National Fire Protection Association’s 2024 Halloween safety sheet reports that decorations were the first items to ignite in more than 800 reported home fires each year, and that nearly one-third of those fires were started by a candle. These figures concern home fires involving decorations generally, not Flying Crank Ghosts specifically. NFPA Halloween safety guidance
For outdoor powered decorations, NFPA advises using GFCI protection, testing it before each use, and using an outdoor-rated extension cord. Its electrical-safety guidance also says damp or wet outdoor locations require weather-resistant GFCI receptacles and weatherproof covers under the National Electrical Code.
