A hollow plywood box can keep dust-collection hoses tucked out of the way on a flip-top tool cart. WOOD Magazine’s shop tip uses a 3-inch-deep box as the cart’s top, routing hoses for a combo disk and belt sander on one side and a thickness planer on the other. The cart can flip between tools without disconnecting the dust-collection hose—but the design is a hose-management idea, not a tested dust-capture system or a complete build plan.
How the flippin’ vacuum box works
WOOD Magazine Staff describes the approach as: “My solution was to build a hollow box for routing and hiding the bulk of the hoses.” The box sits at the top of the flip-top tool stand, so it serves as both the stand’s top and a concealed route for much of the hose arrangement.
The setup pairs a combo disk and belt sander on one side of the cart with a thickness planer on the other. PVC fittings connect the main dust-collection hose to smaller hoses attached to the sander. Slots in the box top let hose ends sit without kinking. With the hoses kept clear of the operator’s way, the cart can turn to planer use without disconnecting the dust-collection hose.

Plan the fit around your cart and tools
The 3-inch depth is the only box measurement given in the tip. It does not establish dimensions that will fit another cart or machine. Before building, measure your own tool ports and hose diameters, check the cart’s geometry, and confirm that the box and hose path have clearance throughout the full flip. Place and size the top slots to let the hose ends sit without sharp bends or kinks, and choose fittings that match the actual hoses and ports.
- Check that hoses remain clear of moving parts and the operator’s working area as the cart turns.
- Confirm that the hose path flexes and reaches both tool positions without pulling loose or becoming pinched.
- Dry-fit the box, hoses, and PVC fittings before fixing the layout in place.
What this design does—and does not—establish
The reported benefit is easier hose management: much of the arrangement is hidden, hoses stay out of the way, and switching to the planer does not require disconnecting the dust-collection hose. WOOD Magazine does not report particle measurements, filtration data, or performance testing for the setup, so the tip does not establish that it eliminates dust, improves air quality, or meets a safety standard.
