The 2024 Samsung Neo QLED 4K range makes the most sense when you need a bright, versatile LCD television rather than an OLED: the QN85D is the value-oriented option, while the QN90D adds stronger reflection handling, more sound capability, and up to 144Hz on compatible sizes. Both combine Mini LED backlighting, quantum-dot color, Samsung’s NQ4 AI Gen2 processor, four HDMI 2.1 inputs, and Tizen smart-TV features.
They are not one identical television, however. Sizes, panel behavior, refresh rates, audio hardware, and availability vary. These are 2024 models, and as of August 2026 they should be treated as clearance, remaining-stock, or refurbished purchases—not as products with a dependable current list price.

1. Mini LED and quantum dots are a sensible bright-room combination
Mini LED and quantum dots solve different problems. Mini LED uses a dense backlight with local dimming zones, allowing the TV to control bright and dark areas more precisely than a basic edge-lit or direct-lit LCD. Quantum dots add a color layer designed to preserve vivid, saturated color at high brightness.

Samsung lists Quantum Matrix Mini LED backlighting and 100% color volume with Quantum Dot for both models in its official QN85D/QN90D comparison. The color-volume figure is Samsung’s manufacturer claim under its specified measurement conditions; it is not a guarantee that every picture mode or program will look identical.

Independent testing found excellent SDR brightness and strong HDR performance from the QN90D, while the QN85D also delivered strong SDR brightness and good HDR brightness. The QN90D generally makes more sense in a room with difficult reflections. The QN85D is still a strong bright-room candidate, but independent testing found more visible direct reflections.
The limitation is fundamental: Mini LED is still a backlit LCD, not a self-emitting display. Local dimming can reduce blooming, but bright text or objects may still create halos around dark backgrounds. OLED remains better for pixel-level black control and a dark-room cinema experience.
2. The processor targets the mixed-quality content people actually watch
The shared NQ4 AI Gen2 processor is useful because much of a household’s viewing is not pristine native 4K. It processes HD cable channels, broadcast sports, DVDs, older television shows, compressed streams, and 1080p online video for a 4K panel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIts work includes upscaling, contrast and tone adjustments, sound processing, dialogue-related features, and Samsung picture-processing tools such as Auto HDR Remastering on applicable models. The QN90D also includes Real Depth Enhancer Pro on applicable sizes or configurations. Samsung describes the processor’s picture and sound functions in its comparison material, while TechRadar’s QN85D review identifies the same processor platform.
Upscaling is estimation, not time travel. It cannot recreate detail missing from a DVD or low-bitrate stream. It may make a poor source look cleaner and more coherent, but aggressive processing can also emphasize compression blocks, halos, artificial texture, or oversharpened edges. RTINGS found the QN90D handled low-resolution upscaling well overall, while noting that results vary with stream quality.

When evaluating one, test the sources you really use: a cable sports feed, a low-bitrate stream, a DVD, a subtitled movie, and animated content. Animation makes edge enhancement especially easy to spot.
3. The gaming hardware is complete enough to be genuinely useful
Four HDMI 2.1 inputs are more practical than a single high-spec port. They leave room for a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, gaming PC, soundbar, and another source without constantly swapping cables or sacrificing features. The QN85D supports 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM); RTINGS’ U.S. review sample had four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports.
The QN90D is listed at up to 144Hz on most sizes. That matters mainly to PC gamers with a graphics card, cable, game, and display settings capable of producing more than 120 frames per second at 4K. Current consoles generally target 4K/120Hz, so the QN85D already covers their headline requirement.
For setup, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, select the correct HDMI input, enable 120Hz output and VRR on the console, and confirm Game Mode is active. PC users should also verify refresh rate in the operating system and graphics-driver settings rather than assuming the TV will select 144Hz automatically.
There are honest trade-offs. RTINGS found low input lag and VRR support but slow pixel transitions on the QN90D, which can produce motion blur. Similar motion limitations were found on the QN85D, and HDR brightness drops in Game Mode—particularly on the QN90D. A high refresh-rate label does not guarantee perfectly sharp fast motion or 144 frames per second in every game.

4. The model and size ladder gives shoppers useful choices
Samsung’s U.S. comparison lists the following range:

| Model | U.S. sizes | Refresh-rate headline | Audio positioning | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QN85D | 55, 65, 75, 85 inches | 120Hz | Dolby Atmos, OTS Lite | Bright-room viewing, consoles, and value-focused buyers |
| QN90D | 43, 50, 55, 65, 75, 85, 98 inches | Up to 144Hz, size-dependent | Dolby Atmos, OTS+ | Brighter rooms, sports, PC gaming, and wider size choice |
Choose the QN85D when the price difference is substantial and 4K/120Hz is all your gaming setup needs. Choose the QN90D when reflection handling, brighter-room performance, stronger built-in audio positioning, or high-refresh-rate PC gaming matters more.
Start with seating distance and the screen size your room actually supports. A larger QN85D can be more satisfying than a smaller QN90D if the latter is undersized for the viewing position.
Do not assume every QN90D behaves like the 65-inch review sample. RTINGS notes meaningful size differences: the 43- and 50-inch versions use different hardware characteristics and lower-powered audio systems, while the 98-inch model does not support 144Hz. Regional QN90D/QN90DD variants can also differ in tuners, apps, and included features.

Samsung’s Tizen platform provides mainstream streaming apps, Smart Hub, voice-assistant support, Multi View, and a SolarCell Remote. Gaming Hub can provide access to supported cloud-gaming services without an additional streaming box, although subscriptions, a reliable internet connection, and—depending on the service—a controller may still be required.

Audio features are similarly about convenience. Dolby Atmos support means the TV can handle a compatible audio format; it does not make the built-in speakers equivalent to a dedicated surround system. Object Tracking Sound attempts to position audio in relation to on-screen movement, and Q-Symphony can combine compatible Samsung TV and soundbar speakers. Samsung lists these ecosystem features in its official comparison.
A Samsung soundbar is not required. The ecosystem is most compelling if you already use Samsung devices, SmartThings, or a Samsung soundbar. A Roku, Apple TV, Google TV streamer, or non-Samsung sound system may be a better fit for a buyer who values platform flexibility or the best sound quality per dollar.
Where the logic breaks down
- You require Dolby Vision: the QN85D and QN90D support HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG, but independent reviews identify no Dolby Vision support.
- You watch mostly in a dark room: Mini LED produces deep LCD blacks, but blooming remains possible and OLED has more precise black control.
- Your room has a direct window reflection: the QN90D is the safer choice, while the QN85D can show stronger reflections.
- You expect gaming brightness to match movie-mode brightness: Game Mode can reduce HDR brightness.
- You want every size to perform identically: the small and 98-inch QN90D versions have important differences.
- You are paying close to an old launch price: these are discontinued 2024 models in the review market and have been replaced by newer products, including the QN90F. Check live stock and pricing before buying through Samsung’s current U.S. Neo QLED category or a retailer.
Verdict
The five design choices fit together: Mini LED and quantum dots address bright rooms; the processor addresses uneven sources; four HDMI 2.1 ports address multi-device gaming; the model and size range address different rooms and budgets; and Tizen, Gaming Hub, and Samsung audio integration reduce the number of extra boxes.
The QN85D is the rational pick when console gaming and bright-room viewing matter but the QN90D premium is hard to justify. The QN90D is the better fit for difficult lighting, sports, larger-size flexibility, or compatible PC gaming. Neither is the obvious choice for Dolby Vision enthusiasts, uncompromising dark-room movie viewers, or buyers who can obtain a newer Mini LED or OLED at a clearly better price.
