EufyCam 3 and HomeBase 3 Review: Why I’m Not Getting Rid of These Cameras Yet

The EufyCam 3/S330 and HomeBase 3 remain worth keeping for reliable solar-powered 4K event recording and local storage—but they are not a 24/7 CCTV system or the most open choice for new buyers.

The EufyCam 3—now commonly sold as the eufyCam S330—and HomeBase 3, officially the eufy HomeBase S380, are still a sensible security system for the right property. Their combination of sharp 4K event footage, integrated solar charging, indoor local storage and no required monthly storage fee remains genuinely useful for monitoring homes, garages, workshops and construction sites.

They are not automatically the best choice for a new installation in 2026. The system is a poor fit if you need continuous recording, dependable operation in deep shade, open NVR integration or broad smart-home compatibility. For existing owners, however, replacement is difficult to justify if the cameras remain reliable and their solar panels are doing their job.

What the EufyCam 3 system actually is

The name causes some confusion because Eufy has used several labels for the same product family:

  • EufyCam 3 is now commonly sold as the eufyCam S330.
  • HomeBase 3 is officially the eufy HomeBase S380.

The typical setup consists of battery-powered outdoor cameras communicating with the HomeBase hub. The cameras record motion events rather than continuously recording every second. HomeBase remains indoors, stores footage locally and provides the central connection for compatible Eufy Security devices.

  • Color Night Vision & IP67 Weatherproof – Built-in IR lights and white lights, these cameras can see up to 100ft in B&W night vision, full-color night vision up to 66ft. Rated IP67, these wired cameras can brave all weather, and stand from cold to hot.

Eufy lists 4K video, an integrated solar panel, a 13,000mAh battery, IP67 weather resistance and 16GB of built-in HomeBase storage. The company says storage can be expanded to up to 16TB using a portable hard drive. Those specifications are useful, but they do not tell the whole ownership story: placement, sunlight, motion frequency, network quality and the type of recording you need matter just as much.

See Eufy’s current S330 product information and EufyCam 3 details for regional naming and specifications.

Why I would still keep these cameras

1. The 4K event footage remains useful

The S330’s clearest enduring advantage is its image quality in good conditions. 4K gives you more detail to work with when reviewing a package delivery, vehicle, item of clothing or person at a moderate distance. It is particularly helpful when one camera covers a driveway, yard or larger area and you need to crop into an event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not make every recording forensic-quality evidence. Identification still depends on distance, lighting, motion blur, compression, camera angle and whether the subject is facing the lens. A 4K image of someone moving quickly through a poorly lit corner may be less useful than a lower-resolution camera positioned closer to the approach route.

Independent coverage has generally praised the system’s crisp 4K image alongside its local-storage and solar features; see WIRED’s EufyCam 3 review for additional review context.

2. Integrated solar charging removes a maintenance job

The built-in solar panel is more convenient than mounting a separate panel and running a charging cable. When a camera receives enough direct sunlight, it can spend long periods installed outdoors without routine USB-C charging. Eufy says roughly two hours of direct daily sunlight can sustain operation under suitable conditions.

That is an operating assumption, not a guarantee. Winter sun, northern latitudes, tree cover, overhangs, dirt, snow, frequent motion and repeated live-view use can all reduce the energy available or increase consumption. A busy camera may drain faster than a camera watching a quiet rear garden, even if both receive similar sunlight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most important installation compromise is that the best security angle may not be the best solar angle. A camera may need to face a shaded side passage or sit under an eave to capture the important approach. In that situation, an external-panel system or a wired camera can be more practical.

aosu D1 Classic 4-Cam Kit, Security Cameras Wireless Outdoor, Solar Powered | No Subscription Required, 32GB Built-in Storage, 360° Auto Tracking, 2K (3MP) Full-Color Night Vision, Easy Install
  • One Unified Security System, Powered by 1st-Gen aosuBase: 32GB of local storage comes ready to use, holding about 120 days of loop recording. No subscription required. Connect up to 4 cameras to one base with a stable wireless connection and centralized local storage. Recordings saved to aosuBase are event-based, triggered by detected activity.
  • Multi-Cam Live View for All-at-Once Monitoring: Watch up to four live camera feeds simultaneously in the aosu app and monitor multiple areas on one screen without opening each camera individually. Live View is available through the aosu app only; the base does not support HDMI or TV output.
  • 360° Coverage with Pan, Tilt, and Smart Auto Tracking: Pan and tilt to see all around your property. When activity is detected, the camera automatically follows people and other movement to keep the action in view while recording, giving you a more complete view of what happens around your home.
  • 2K (3MP) Clarity with Full-Color Night Vision: Capture clear details in 2K and zoom in up to 6x for a closer look. Built-in spotlights enable full-color night vision, helping you see important color details like clothing and vehicles after dark. For more discreet monitoring, switch to infrared mode for black-and-white night vision without visible lighting.
  • Quick Setup with a Pre-Paired System: Connect aosuBase to your router's LAN port with the included Ethernet cable. Cameras connect wirelessly to aosuBase instead of your home Wi-Fi. The system comes pre-paired, so simply power on the cameras and complete setup in the app without pairing each camera one by one. The cameras are designed to work with the included aosuBase, and add-on cameras connect through the base as well.

3. Local storage avoids a mandatory storage subscription

HomeBase 3 stores recordings locally, with 16GB included and optional external expansion. You can therefore use the core recording system without paying a monthly cloud-storage fee. That remains a compelling ownership advantage for anyone fitting several cameras across a property.

“No required subscription” should not be confused with “every feature is free forever.” Eufy offers optional cloud services and paid membership benefits in some markets. Local recording also does not mean the system is completely independent of software, accounts, firmware, the mobile app or network connectivity.

How long 16GB lasts depends on the number of cameras, event frequency, resolution and retention settings. Light event use may be comfortable; a camera aimed at a busy road, driveway or construction entrance can consume storage much faster. Storage expansion is useful, but a hard drive is still a component that can fail and should not be treated as an indefinite archive.

Eufy describes HomeBase’s local-storage and hub role in its HomeBase and NVR comparison.

4. Keeping storage indoors is sensible

Outdoor cameras are exposed to weather, accidental damage and tampering. With this system, the principal storage hub can remain indoors rather than placing a removable storage card in each camera. That makes the arrangement more practical than camera-only storage for many homes, workshops and sites.

It is not invulnerable. Someone who steals the HomeBase, cuts network power or disables the local network can affect access to the system. Local storage reduces cloud dependence; it is not a complete physical-security or backup strategy.

5. The AI can reduce alert noise

HomeBase 3 and compatible cameras provide person, vehicle, pet and facial-recognition features within the Eufy ecosystem. These classifications can make a camera more useful than a basic motion sensor, particularly when trees, traffic or animals trigger frequent events.

Eufy markets BionicMind recognition accuracy above 99.9% under its stated conditions. That is a manufacturer claim, not a household guarantee or an independently established success rate. Hats, masks, sunglasses, poor lighting, side profiles and unusual angles can reduce recognition quality. “Known” does not prove identity, and “unknown” does not mean dangerous.

Blink Outdoor 4 – Wireless smart security camera, two-year battery life, 1080p HD day and infrared night live view, two-way talk. Sync Module Core included – 3 camera system
  • Outdoor 4 is our most affordable wireless smart security camera yet, offering up to two-year battery life for around-the-clock peace of mind. Local storage not included with Sync Module Core.
  • See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.
  • Two-year battery life — Set up in minutes and get up to two years of power with the included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module Core.
  • Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
  • Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).

Detection also has physical limitations. Eufy warns that objects moving directly toward the centre of the camera may not always be detected. Motion zones, camera height and approach direction therefore matter. AI should filter alerts and help organise events—not serve as a security guarantee.

Placement guidance and detection limitations are discussed in Eufy’s product documentation.

Where the system has aged badly

It is not a 24/7 recording system

This is the biggest limitation to understand before buying. The S330 is fundamentally a battery-powered, motion-event camera. It is not continuously recording a video stream that you can search frame by frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That matters if you need to:

  • review everything that happened between two motion events;
  • monitor a driveway continuously;
  • capture slow or subtle activity;
  • run a traditional CCTV-style installation; or
  • ensure the beginning of an incident is recorded.

For continuous recording, choose a wired system such as Eufy’s E330 Professional, or consider a wired Reolink or UniFi Protect installation. Eufy’s own comparison identifies the E330 Professional as supporting 24/7 recording while the S330 does not.

Battery operation involves compromises

A battery camera normally conserves energy by sleeping until motion occurs or someone requests a live view. Compared with a permanently powered camera, it may take longer to begin streaming, miss the start of an event, limit recording modes and behave differently in cold weather.

Frequent live-view checks, high sensitivity, large activity zones and weak connectivity can all increase power use. This is acceptable for event-based property monitoring, but it is not equivalent to a wired surveillance recorder.

The ecosystem creates switching costs

The S330 depends on HomeBase 3 for the full system experience, including centralised storage and some AI functions. Adding older or newer Eufy products requires checking more than whether a device can technically connect.

Smart-home support is not especially open

Eufy lists Alexa and Google Assistant support for the system, but its published FAQ has listed limitations involving SmartThings, Wink, Nest, Home Assistant and Blue Iris. Integrations can change by product, region and software version, so check the current support documentation before buying.

Do not assume that the S330 supports Apple HomeKit or HomeKit Secure Video. Only make that assumption when current official documentation explicitly confirms it.

Local storage is not absolute privacy

Local recording is a meaningful privacy and cost benefit, but remote viewing, accounts, firmware, the Eufy Security app, network access and optional cloud services remain part of the ownership model. The more accurate description is less cloud-dependent, not completely private or entirely offline.

Installation guide: where the S330 works best

  1. Choose the security angle first. Decide which approach, doorway, gate or work area must be visible before optimising the panel’s position.
  2. Check sunlight over the day and year. Bright daylight is not the same as useful direct sun. Consider winter conditions, tree growth and seasonal shading.
  3. Keep the HomeBase indoors. Position it near the router or network connection and in a location where it is not easily removed.
  4. Use motion zones carefully. Exclude roads, public paths, waving trees, flags and reflective surfaces where possible.
  5. Test night footage before finalising the mount. Daytime 4K footage can look excellent while a poorly positioned night view is disappointing.
  6. Avoid shooting through glass. Reflections can seriously degrade night footage and may interfere with detection.
  7. Test live view locally and remotely. Confirm that the camera, hub and network behave as expected before relying on them.
  8. Plan recovery. Know how you will recover the account, restart HomeBase, charge a camera and replace or inspect external storage.

Useful installation scenarios

Location or requirement Assessment
Sunny driveway or garden Strong fit for solar event recording, especially where 4K detail is useful.
Shaded side yard or wooded property Weak fit unless you can reliably provide charging; consider wired power or a separately positioned solar panel.
Front door beneath a deep overhang Check whether the camera can receive enough direct sun without compromising the view.
Camera facing a busy road Expect frequent events and faster storage or battery consumption; narrow activity zones carefully.
Low-traffic rural property Often a good fit because event frequency is lower, provided the camera receives adequate sunlight.
High-security entrance requiring a complete record Choose a wired 24/7 system rather than relying on motion detection.

Should you upgrade within Eufy?

EufyCam S3 Pro

The S3 Pro is the most obvious same-brand upgrade. It keeps the HomeBase-centred, battery/solar and local-storage concept while offering newer imaging and low-light capabilities. It makes more sense when night performance is a clear weakness or you are starting from scratch. For an existing owner satisfied with S330 footage, the improvement may not justify the cost.

Eufy positions the S3 Pro as a newer 4K solar model using HomeBase S380 and expandable local storage in its security-camera buying guide.

Eufy E330 Professional

The E330 Professional is the better Eufy choice when wired power and 24/7 recording matter more than simple installation. It requires cable runs and is less convenient for renters or difficult mounting locations, but it is designed for a different job.

Alternatives outside Eufy

  • Reolink: a stronger option for wired cameras, NVRs, continuous recording and broader local-network flexibility.
  • Arlo: attractive for a polished consumer experience, but compare subscription costs and feature availability.
  • Ring: sensible for households already committed to Alexa and Ring doorbells or alarms; less compelling for local-storage-first buyers.
  • Google Nest: a better match for Google Home integration and cloud AI, but not for buyers prioritising local-only storage.
  • Ubiquiti UniFi Protect: a serious local-recording and wired-surveillance platform for technically minded users, with higher infrastructure cost and setup complexity.

Buying advice for 2026

Existing owners

Keep the system if the cameras remain reliable, the solar panels receive enough usable sunlight, event recording is sufficient, 4K footage meets your needs and you do not require unsupported integrations. If retention is the problem, a compatible external drive may be a more rational upgrade than replacing every camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

New buyers

Buy the S330 only when you specifically want battery/solar installation, local storage and event-based recording, and the current bundle price is meaningfully better than newer alternatives. Check the exact camera count, HomeBase inclusion, storage arrangement and regional compatibility before paying.

Eufy’s US pages have shown conflicting prices and configurations, including different camera bundles and promotional listings. Do not treat a single price as permanent; verify the exact configuration on the buying page on the day you purchase.

Renters and difficult cable runs

The S330’s battery and solar design is more convenient than installing wired cameras, but confirm that the mounting point has sufficient sun. If it does not, the installation advantage largely disappears.

Apple-focused households

Verify current Apple HomeKit support before committing. Do not assume that compatibility with Alexa or Google Assistant implies equivalent Apple integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Users who need a complete record

Choose wired E330 Professional, Reolink, UniFi Protect or another system designed for continuous recording. A motion camera cannot reconstruct events that it failed to detect.

Final verdict

The EufyCam 3/HomeBase 3 system remains useful because its basic proposition has not aged out: sharp 4K event footage, integrated solar charging and local indoor storage without a required monthly recording plan. Those advantages are especially valuable once the cameras are already installed and working.

Its weaknesses are equally clear. It is not a 24/7 recorder, solar performance depends heavily on placement, the app and integrations are less open than some alternatives, and HomeBase compatibility must be checked device by device.

For existing owners, keep it if it is reliable. For new buyers, choose it only when solar event recording and local storage match the job—and after comparing the current bundle against the S3 Pro and wired alternatives.
