Fengyuan Residence is a 222 m² private house in Taichung, Taiwan, designed by Mao, Shen-Chiang Architecture Studio. The 2025 project turns away from limited outward views to create a sheltered, inward-focused home, using fair-faced concrete, natural timber and controlled daylight to shape its interior.

Project overview

ArchDaily lists Fengyuan Residence as a 2025 house with an area of 222 m², designed by Mao, Shen-Chiang Architecture Studio. The contractor, Shih Ao, reports that the private house was completed in April 2025 and describes it as a four-story building. ArchDaily’s project listing names Mao Shen-Chiang as lead architect, Hong Hui-Chen as a design team member, and Kuo-Min Lee as photographer. It also credits Shih Ao Fair-Faced Concrete as general contractor and lists structural and MEP consultants. Shih Ao’s project page provides the contractor’s completion and building description.

How the site shaped the design

The architect’s project description characterizes the urban site as enclosed by neighboring buildings and roads, with few outward views. Rather than making visual openness the organizing idea, the design turns inward to create a sheltered home centered on its residents. The description calls this approach a resident-centered “second nature.”

That response is expressed through the relationship of rooms, walls and light. ArchDaily describes the home as organized in three stacked layers, with vertical circulation acting as an organizing core that links everyday routines. Shih Ao, by contrast, calls it a four-story building. The available project accounts do not explain how those descriptions relate, so neither should be treated as a definitive resolution of the other.

Concrete, timber and daylight

Fair-faced concrete is the primary material. In the architect-provided description published by ArchDaily, extensive natural timber offsets the potentially cold impression of using a single hard material and brings warmth to the domestic spaces.

Daylight is also a central part of the design account. Light reflected vertically from above is guided into deeper areas of the interior, while changing light and shadow create variation through the day. The published description presents this as a deliberate way to shape the experience of rooms, rather than as a claim about measured energy or lighting performance.

Rooms for family life and cats

The project includes living and dining areas, a garden, a master bedroom and secondary bedrooms. It also incorporates dedicated areas for the family’s cats, designed to support interaction with people. The project account says hygiene and long-term maintenance were considered, though it does not specify particular finishes, systems or maintenance procedures.
