Construction on the Fehmarnbelt tunnel resumed gradually after a cyberattack disrupted Femern Link Contractors’ (FLC) IT systems. In an update on 16 October 2026, project company Femern A/S said some site systems were still affected while earthworks, some concrete work and reinforcement-steel production continued. A 21 October update said preparations for the first special-element immersion had resumed, but no immersion date had been announced.

What happened in the Fehmarnbelt tunnel cyberattack?

FLC, the main contractor building the 18-kilometre tunnel between Denmark and Germany, was targeted overnight into Monday, 12 October 2026. Femern A/S reported on 16 October that the attack affected FLC’s IT systems and that several site systems remained affected. The company described a gradual return to work rather than a full restoration. Femern A/S update, 16 October 2026; Femern A/S project overview.

The 18-kilometre figure describes the tunnel project’s overall length, not the scope or consequences of the cyberattack. The public updates did not quantify affected systems, downtime, financial losses or schedule impact.

Which construction work continued or resumed?

According to the 16 October project update, activity varied by work area: some construction continued without interruption, while other operations were being brought back gradually.

  • Earthworks: Continued without disruption on both the Danish and German sides.
  • Concrete work: Some concrete work could proceed.
  • Reinforcement steel: Production was underway in the panel factory on the Danish side.
  • Rødbyhavn production facility: Femern A/S said it was expected to resume operations soon, but did not give a restart date.

The project-company update did not say that every site system or operation was back to normal. Sund & Bælt release carried by Via Ritzau, 16 October 2026.

Does the cyberattack mean the tunnel project is delayed?

The October updates do not establish a project-wide delay or quantify any schedule impact. They report continuing and resumed work in specific areas, alongside systems and a production facility whose status was not fully resolved in the published information.

As of the 21 October report, preparations for the first special-element immersion were moving forward, but the date remained unannounced. That leaves the timing of the next milestone open; it does not, by itself, show whether the overall tunnel schedule has changed.
