“Quick” can mean a perennial flowers in its first year from seed, blooms in its first season after planting, or simply fills out a garden rapidly. Those are different timelines. The available extension guidance supports three useful examples—not a verified list of eight—so this guide keeps the recommendations to plants and growing timelines the cited sources actually describe.
What “first-year bloom” means
Check whether a claim refers to seed or to a nursery-grown plant. A perennial started from seed may need time to reach flowering size; one planted as an established start can have a different timeline. Iowa State University Extension says some perennials with simple germination requirements grow to blooming size quickly, and notes that perennials started in fall bloom the following summer. That is not a promise that every perennial blooms in the year it is sown. See Iowa State’s guide to growing perennials from seed.
For the fastest garden presence, University of Nevada, Reno Extension recommends nursery-grown plants as the fastest way to establish a perennial garden. Seed is an alternative for gardeners willing to wait. The guidance is from the university’s 1998 Perennials in the Garden publication.
Three perennials with documented quick-bloom potential
| Plant | What “quick” means in the cited guidance | Light, soil and mature size | Season and regional limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ‘Prairie Sun’ black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) | UW–Madison Extension says, “It grows quickly from seed and will bloom heavily in its first year.” This claim is specific to the named cultivar. | Not stated in the cited article. | First-year seed bloom is the stated timing; the source does not establish that result for every Rudbeckia or climate. Source: UW–Madison Extension. |
| Perennial or vegetatively propagated verbena (Verbena spp.) | Clemson Extension says verbenas generally grow moderately to quickly and that perennial forms bloom well in their first season after planting. | Not stated in the cited guidance. | The guidance is framed for South Carolina and distinguishes perennial or vegetatively propagated forms from bedding types grown from seed. It does not establish the same timing for every verbena. Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension HGIC (2007). |
| Other perennials grown from seed | Iowa State Extension says some perennials with simple germination requirements grow to blooming size quickly; fall-started perennials bloom the following summer. | Not stated as a general value; requirements vary by plant. | This is a broad seed-starting observation, not a species-specific first-year bloom guarantee. Source: Iowa State Extension and Outreach. |
‘Prairie Sun’ black-eyed Susan
If you want a sourced example of a perennial flower grown from seed that can bloom in its first year, this cultivar is the clearest fit. UW–Madison Extension also advises deadheading spent flowers to encourage additional bloom. Leaving late-season flower heads can support reseeding and provide food for birds, so the choice depends on whether continued flowering or seed heads are the priority.

Perennial verbena
Look for a perennial or vegetatively propagated verbena rather than assuming a seed-grown bedding type will follow the same schedule. Clemson’s first-season guidance is regionally framed for South Carolina; use local advice to judge whether a particular type suits your climate.
Other perennials started from seed
Seed timelines depend on the species and its germination requirements. Iowa State’s guidance supports the general possibility of some perennials reaching flowering size quickly, but does not name a universal set of fast-blooming species. Its fall-started plants bloom the following summer, illustrating why “first year” needs a clear starting point.

Choose for the site, not just the speed
Before buying seed or plants, match the perennial to the conditions where it will grow. University of Maryland Extension’s perennial selection and care guidance identifies sunlight, soil and drainage, moisture, mature height and spread, bloom season, and the garden’s purpose as practical selection factors.
- Light: Check the site’s sun exposure against the plant’s needs.
- Soil and drainage: Consider how quickly the soil drains and whether the plant’s moisture needs fit.
- Room to grow: Allow for mature height and spread rather than planting only for the plant’s initial size.
- Season and purpose: Select for the bloom period and the role you want the plant to play in the garden.
- Local fit: Verify that the species or cultivar suits your climate; a result described for South Carolina or a specific cultivar should not be assumed to apply everywhere.
Perennials commonly return and may grow larger after establishment, so a quick start is useful only if the plant also fits the space over time.

How to get flowers sooner
- For the quickest garden establishment, choose nursery-grown perennial starts. University of Nevada, Reno Extension identifies nursery-grown plants as the fastest way to establish a perennial garden.
- If starting from seed, check the species-specific timeline. Do not treat “first year” as interchangeable with “first summer after fall sowing”; Iowa State notes that fall-started perennials bloom the following summer.
- Match the plant to the site before planting. Check light, soil, drainage, moisture, mature size, and local climate so the plant can establish under suitable conditions.
