FAKRO Attic Ladder Buying Guide: Sizes, Materials, and Load Ratings

Match a FAKRO attic ladder to your rough opening and ceiling height, then compare its configuration, published load rating, insulation value, and accessory requirements.

Choose a FAKRO attic ladder by matching the measured rough opening and floor-to-ceiling height to the exact model’s specifications first. Then compare its configuration, rated load, insulation value, and accessory requirements. These details differ across the range, so a model name or material alone is not enough to establish fit or capacity.

How do I choose the right attic ladder size?

Start with the rough opening—the framed ceiling opening the ladder must fit. FAKRO identifies it as one of the first factors to consider. It is not interchangeable with the ladder’s outside frame dimensions, so compare your measurement with the exact model’s specification.

Measure the rough opening

Measure the opening’s length and width and record both. The FAKRO LME technical sheet lists four rough-opening sizes: 22½ × 47 in, 25 × 47 in, 22½ × 54 in, and 25 × 54 in. Those dimensions apply to the listed LME configurations, not every FAKRO ladder. Check the LME technical specification or the current documentation for your chosen model before ordering.

Measure floor-to-ceiling height

Measure from the finished floor to the ceiling at the opening and match that height to the model’s stated range. The LME specification gives a floor-to-ceiling range of 7 ft 9 in to 9 ft 4 in; other models and configurations differ. FAKRO says some ladders can be cut or adjusted, and some can have steps removed or added, but the permitted adjustment depends on the model. Follow that model’s instructions rather than assuming another ladder’s adjustment method applies.

Check deployment and landing space

A ladder can fit the opening and still be unsuitable for the room if it cannot unfold into usable space. Consider the room layout and verify the specified projection and landing space when those figures are provided for the model. Use the current model specification and installation instructions for required clearances and installation details.

Which FAKRO construction and configuration should I compare?

FAKRO’s range includes wooden folding ladders, metal folding ladders, and metal scissor ladders. Configuration affects how the ladder deploys and the space it occupies; material alone does not tell you its load rating or insulation value. Compare models against your opening, height, room layout, and the specifications below.

The X-frame adds stability, while anti-slip rubber feet help avoids shifting. 5.5-inch wide steps ensure better balance and easier climbing
  • Hydraulic Support for Safe Use: Upgraded dual hydraulic rods allow the ladder to lower slowly and steadily, helping prevent sudden drops. Saves effort during use, ideal for the elderly or those with limited strength
  • Effortless Open & Close: Includes pull rod and ring—no extra tools or height needed. Just pull to open, then use the rod to fold it back. The magnetic door panel closes securely and blends with modern ceiling styles
  • Space-Saving Design: With a folded size of 38.6 x 27.2 x 17.3 in and landing length of 55.1–57.1 in, it fits compact areas. Detachable steps allow flexible installation for attics, balconies, rooftops, or lofts

LWP Insulated wooden folding 350 lb R-5.7 Multiple sizes; consult current model specification.
LME Insulated metal folding 400 lb R-5.3 Listed openings: 22½ × 47 in, 25 × 47 in, 22½ × 54 in, and 25 × 54 in; listed ceiling-height range: 7 ft 9 in–9 ft 4 in.
LST Insulated metal scissor 350 lb R-5.2 Several opening sizes; consult current model specification.
LTK Wooden energy model 375 lb R-10 Multiple configurations; consult current model specification.
LWT Wooden super-thermo insulated 350 lb in FAKRO’s catalog comparison R-12.5 Multiple configurations; verify the exact current SKU.

Figures in this comparison are FAKRO USA manufacturer specifications in its architects’ guide and attic ladder catalog. The LME opening and height details come from its technical specification. These are product ratings, not independent performance-test results; check current documentation for the exact configuration because listings and technical documents can be updated independently.

How should I compare load ratings?

Use the maximum load published for the exact model, and check whether the model is marked to an applicable ANSI standard. The examples here show why you should not infer capacity from construction: FAKRO lists the LWP wooden folding ladder at 350 lb, the LME metal folding ladder at 400 lb, and the LST metal scissor ladder at 350 lb. The LTK is listed at 375 lb, while FAKRO’s catalog comparison gives the LWT as 350 lb.

Aluminum Attic Ladder, 350 lbs Capacity Folding Loft Stairs for 7'8"-10'3" Ceilings, 22.5" x 54" Opening, Non-Slip Steps, Space-Saving Pull Down Design
  • HIGH WEIGHT CAPACITY – Supports up to 350 lbs, ideal for carrying boxes, tools, and other heavy items with confidence.
  • UNIVERSAL FIT – Adjustable to ceiling heights from 7'8" to 10'3", suitable for various attic and loft spaces.
  • SPACE-SAVING FOLDING DESIGN – Retracts into the ceiling frame when not in use, freeing up floor space.
  • ENHANCED SAFETY – Widened aluminum steps with a non-slip surface, sturdy hinges, and large rubber feet for stable climbing.
  • DURABLE ALUMINUM BUILD – Rust-resistant, lightweight, and designed for long-term performance with minimal maintenance.

These numbers are model specifications; they do not establish the capacity of every ladder in a product family or configuration. Confirm the rating on the current specification for the precise model and size you are considering.

How much insulation do I need?

If the attic is separated from conditioned living space, compare the ladder’s lid insulation specification along with its fit and configuration. FAKRO describes insulated models as having sealed, insulated lids. Its published family comparison lists LWP at R-5.7, LME at R-5.3, LST at R-5.2, LTK at R-10, and LWT at R-12.5. These are manufacturer product ratings, not an assessment of the energy performance of the whole house. FAKRO also describes non-insulated models for situations where an insulated attic ladder is not required.

What accessories and installation details should I check?

Handrails and ladder ends may be included with one model and sold separately for another. Confirm what comes with the exact ladder, whether an accessory is compatible, and whether it changes clearance or installation requirements before buying.

FAKRO says its LXS ladder ends protect floors and can extend the installation range of certain models. That does not mean they fit every ladder: check the accessory’s compatibility information and the ladder’s instructions. Use FAKRO’s installation instructions for the current, model-specific steps and adjustments.

What to record before selecting a model

  • Rough-opening width and length.
  • Finished floor-to-ceiling height.
  • Available space for deployment and landing.
  • Exact model and configuration, plus its published maximum load.
  • Whether an insulated lid is needed and the model’s stated R-value.
  • Included or required handrails, ladder ends, and other compatible accessories.

Use those measurements to narrow the candidates, then verify every dimension, rating, adjustment, and accessory against the current documentation for the exact model. FAKRO’s attic ladder range and catalog provide starting points for comparing products; the model’s specification and installation instructions govern the final fit.
