Faikin Is Now Faikout: A Local Home Assistant Controller for Compatible Daikin ACs

Faikin is now Faikout: an ESP32-based local controller for compatible Daikin ACs. It can integrate with Home Assistant, but connector, voltage, protocol, and model compatibility must be verified first.

Yes—but “drop-in” needs qualification. Adrian “RevK” Kennard’s Faikin project, now branded Faikout, is an ESP32-based controller that can provide local web control, MQTT, and Home Assistant integration for compatible Daikin air conditioners. It can replace some official Wi-Fi modules or connect through a suitable service port, but it is not universally compatible and is not a Daikin product.

The decisive questions are your exact indoor-unit model, connector, wiring, protocol, voltage, and required firmware. Check those before buying hardware or opening the air conditioner.

What Faikin—or Faikout—actually is

Faikin/Faikout combines ESP32 hardware with open-source firmware for controlling compatible Daikin indoor units locally. It is designed as an alternative to newer Wi-Fi adapters that depend on a manufacturer cloud service. The controller can expose a local web interface, publish state and receive commands over MQTT, and provide a route into Home Assistant.

The project’s documentation describes local operation without a required cloud account or Internet connection for ordinary control. The project’s rationale is that some official Daikin Wi-Fi modules are cloud-oriented, Internet-dependent, or slow; that is the maintainer’s rationale, not a universal independently measured performance claim.

The original name was Faikin. The RevK project is now called Faikout, apparently following concerns about using “Daikin” in the name. The original GitHub repository was archived on June 13, 2026 and points readers toward the current project location. Older GitHub issues and discussions can still be useful for model-specific compatibility evidence.

What you get

  • Local browser-based control.
  • MQTT commands and status reporting.
  • Home Assistant integration, most clearly through MQTT discovery.
  • Live status through the project’s local interfaces.
  • Optional Ethernet on some hardware variants.
  • Optional remotes, displays, IR, and environmental sensors.
  • Open-source firmware, PCB designs, and case files.
  • Operation that can continue locally when the Internet is unavailable.

Not every function is available on every air conditioner. Exposed controls and sensors depend on the indoor-unit model, Daikin protocol, hardware revision, connector, and firmware build.

Is it really a drop-in replacement?

Sometimes—but never assume it from the name alone. A preassembled Faikout board may physically replace a compatible Daikin Wi-Fi module when the unit has the expected connector, the wiring matches, the protocol is supported, and the board’s voltage and signal requirements are satisfied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Newer boards use a five-pin connector intended to match some official Daikin Wi-Fi-module plugs. That does not make every five-pin Daikin connector interchangeable. Connector pitch, pin order, cable direction, signal assignment, and protocol can differ. A plug that fits can still be electrically wrong.

Installation type Typical difficulty What it requires
Compatible Wi-Fi-module replacement Low to moderate Correct Faikout board and matching cable
S21 or other service-port installation Moderate Model-specific lead, pinout, and voltage checks
X50A, X35A, S403, S430, or similar installation Moderate to high Exact documentation and careful electrical verification
DIY ESP32 build High Regulation, protection, level shifting, connectors, firmware, and enclosure

“Drop-in” does not mean universal compatibility, that the indoor unit need not be opened, that installation is risk-free, or that every firmware revision will work. It also does not mean the controller is a direct USB accessory for Home Assistant.

Check compatibility before buying

Record the complete indoor-unit model number, including regional suffixes. Do not rely only on the outdoor-unit model or on a similar-looking unit in an online discussion.

  1. Photograph the indoor-unit PCB and connector labels.
  2. Identify whether the unit exposes S21, S403, X50A, X35A, S90, S430, or another connector.
  3. Check the current Faikout compatibility material and model-specific discussions.
  4. Note whether an official Wi-Fi adapter is already installed.
  5. Determine whether Faikout will replace that adapter or use an unused service port.
  6. Confirm the cable, connector pitch, pin order, and firmware target.
  7. Ask the seller or maintainer before purchase if evidence for your exact model is unclear.

Relevant discussions include examples involving S403, X50A/X35A, and S430. These are examples, not universal wiring instructions.

Electrical and connector safety

Do not connect a controller based on connector appearance alone. Isolate power before accessing the indoor-unit electronics, identify the exact connector and pinout, and keep the controller insulated from metalwork, condensation, hot areas, and moving parts.

  • Do not reverse the cable.
  • Do not assume two S21-looking connectors share the same wiring.
  • Do not connect an unprotected ESP32 development board directly to an unknown service port.
  • ESP32 inputs are generally not 5-volt tolerant; level shifting or protection may be required.
  • Measure voltages only if you understand HVAC electronics and the associated hazards.
  • Never touch unidentified high-voltage terminals.

A documented S403 installation warned that a nearby pin carried approximately 320 V. That is a user-reported example, not a universal Daikin pinout, but it shows why generic wiring diagrams can be dangerous. A separate S21 example described approximately 12 V at the connection and a Faikin board designed for an input range of roughly 4–40 V. Neither observation authorizes connecting any other model without checking its documentation.

A manufactured Faikout board and an improvised ESP32 board are not automatically equivalent. DIY hardware may need a regulator, buck converter, logic-level protection, correct crimp terminals, and a suitable enclosure.

Installation workflow

1. Inspect and verify

Before opening the unit, identify the indoor-unit model, connector, cable, protocol, board variant, and installation method. Confirm that the required cable is available and that the seller ships to your country.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Power down and connect

Follow the Daikin service instructions for removing the indoor-unit cover and isolate power first. Fit the documented cable in the correct orientation. Mount the controller where it cannot contact condensation, hot surfaces, fans, or exposed metalwork.

3. Configure Wi-Fi

After restoring power, the controller should boot and provide its setup access point or join the configured network, depending on the firmware and board. The setup documentation describes choosing a hostname and reaching the device locally through a name ending in .local, such as GuestAC.local. If multicast DNS does not work across your VLANs, use the device’s assigned IP address.

4. Configure MQTT

Enter the local MQTT broker address and credentials when required, save the settings, and reboot. A broker is not necessary for the controller’s local web interface, but it is the clearest route to Home Assistant integration for many installations.

5. Test the air conditioner locally

Before creating automations, test power, mode, set temperature, fan speed, swing, and any advanced controls your unit exposes. Confirm that reported state changes match the physical unit and its normal remote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Update carefully

The setup documentation recommends upgrading after receiving a device because features are added over time. The documented web upgrade process may require temporary Internet access, even though ordinary operation can remain local. Do not assume that “cloud-free” means every maintenance operation is offline.

Home Assistant integration

MQTT is the clearest general path

  1. Make sure Home Assistant has access to a local MQTT broker.
  2. Connect Faikout to local Wi-Fi.
  3. Open its local setup page.
  4. Enter the broker address, username, and password if required.
  5. Enable or confirm MQTT/Home Assistant discovery.
  6. In Home Assistant, open Settings → Devices & services; labels can vary slightly by release.
  7. Open the discovered device and rename its climate entity and sensors.
  8. Test each control before using it in automations.

If discovery fails, check broker reachability, credentials, discovery settings, topic prefixes, VLAN rules, firewall policies, and whether Faikout is actually publishing state. The device’s .local address is separate from MQTT and may fail across networks even when MQTT works.

Local Daikin API compatibility

Some Faikin/Faikout configurations can emulate an older local Daikin interface. Home Assistant’s Daikin documentation lists ESP32-Faikout as an option when a unit is not supported by the normal Daikin integration.

That does not mean every Faikout installation automatically appears through Home Assistant’s native Daikin integration. The result depends on firmware, protocol, and current Home Assistant support. Treat MQTT discovery as a separate integration path rather than assuming the two methods are interchangeable.

Hardware and cost

For a ready-made installation, you may need a preassembled controller, a compatible cable, a case, local Wi-Fi, and an MQTT broker. The RevK shop listing observed on August 18, 2026 showed:

  • Faikout HA/Wi-Fi/optional-Ethernet controller: £33.00.
  • Faikout/S21 generic cable and case: £6.00.
  • Faikout remote with display, case, and IR: £40.00.

These are UK seller prices at that date. Shipping, VAT, import charges, availability, and regional delivery can change the total. See the RevK shop listing rather than treating those figures as fixed prices.

A DIY build can require an ESP32, regulator, level shifting, protection, connector and crimp hardware, programming equipment, PCB fabrication, and an enclosure. A community report of approximately US$4 per PCB describes only one prototype cost and excludes components, tools, labor, shipping, enclosure, and the risk of damaging the air conditioner.

Firmware recovery

If credentials are lost or the settings page becomes inaccessible, the setup documentation says reflashing may be required. Depending on the board, that can involve a USB-to-serial adapter, Dupont wires, firmware binaries, and a TC2030 programming lead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firmware families mentioned in the documentation include PICO, S1, S2, and S3 variants. Flashing commands and offsets are board- and version-specific. For example, an erase command such as:

esptool.py --chip esp32s3 erase_flash

is not a universal recovery procedure. Select the exact firmware and follow the current board-specific instructions; do not copy an old write_flash command to a different ESP32 target.

Common problems

The controller powers up but reports that the system is offline

Check the connector, cable direction, TX/RX assignment, common ground, voltage level, firmware target, and protocol. A cable can fit physically while being electrically wrong. A documented setup discussion involved an incorrect cable and questionable pin assignments, so do not assume that a powered board is correctly connected.

Wi-Fi works but Home Assistant does not discover it

Check the MQTT broker address, credentials, broker reachability from the Faikout network, discovery settings, topic prefixes, firewall rules, and VLAN routing. Confirm that the controller is publishing state before troubleshooting Home Assistant entities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connector looks right but communication fails

The pitch, wiring, pin order, or protocol may differ. The port may also require alternate firmware or may not be intended for the same controller type. Recheck the exact indoor-unit documentation.

Only some air-conditioner functions work

Verify each feature independently. Power, mode, setpoint, fan, swing, quiet, powerful, economy, filter status, temperature sensors, and energy values may not all be exposed by a particular unit or protocol. An API field or Home Assistant entity does not prove that the hardware implements the function correctly.

Faikout versus the alternatives

Option Best for Main trade-off
Faikout Technically capable owners who want local control Model-specific compatibility and DIY electrical risk
Daikin official adapter Warranty, installer support, and manufacturer-backed hardware May depend on Daikin cloud services
Home Assistant local Daikin integration Units already supported by a local adapter Depends on the existing controller and model
Daikin Onecta cloud integration Users who want to avoid hardware modification Requires cloud accounts, Internet access, and regional service support
IR blaster Basic, non-invasive commands Usually lacks authoritative state feedback
DIY ESP32 controller Experienced electronics builders Highest responsibility for protection, firmware, and enclosure

The community Daikin Onecta Home Assistant integration uses Daikin’s cloud API and requires a Daikin Developer Portal account. It is therefore a different choice from Faikout’s local-controller approach.

Who should buy it?

Faikout is a good fit when your exact indoor unit has documented compatibility, you are comfortable accessing the indoor-unit electronics, and local operation matters more than manufacturer support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the official adapter when warranty, installer support, certification, and simplicity matter more than avoiding cloud dependence.

Choose an existing local adapter when your unit already works with Home Assistant’s local Daikin integration and you do not need another hardware layer.

Choose IR when you need only basic commands, have no suitable service port, and accept weaker state reporting.

When not to buy Faikout

  • Your exact indoor-unit model has no credible compatibility evidence.
  • You cannot safely access the indoor-unit PCB.
  • You need manufacturer-backed installation and support.
  • You are unwilling to troubleshoot cables, firmware, MQTT, or network configuration.
  • A certified local or official adapter already meets your needs.
  • You are treating a cheap ESP32 development board as a safe substitute for a protected controller design.

Bottom line

Faikin/Faikout is a genuine local-control project, not just a software integration. For a compatible Daikin AC, it can replace or supplement the official Wi-Fi controller and connect to Home Assistant without making the air conditioner dependent on Daikin’s cloud. But the project is best understood as a family of firmware, boards, cables, and model-specific installations—not a universal drop-in module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the exact indoor-unit model and connector first. If the evidence is solid and you are comfortable with the electrical work, Faikout is a compelling local alternative. If compatibility is uncertain or installation risk is unacceptable, use an official or installer-supported solution instead.
