Some of IKEA’s Matter-Compatible Devices Are Now Available in the US

IKEA’s Matter-compatible range is arriving in the US in stages. Here’s what is available, what DIRIGERA does, and why battery-powered sensors may still need a Thread Border Router.

Yes—some of IKEA’s new Matter-compatible smart-home devices are now available through IKEA’s US store. The rollout has been staggered rather than a single nationwide launch: KAJPLATS bulbs, BILRESA remotes, GRILLPLATS plugs, and several sensors are listed, while delivery, pickup, and store inventory can vary.

The important catch is that “Matter-compatible” does not mean “works with only a phone.” You still need a compatible Matter controller, and many battery-powered IKEA devices also need access to a Thread Border Router. IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub is optional for some setups, but remains the simplest choice for an IKEA-centered system and is especially useful for older TRÅDFRI products.

What IKEA devices are available in the US?

IKEA announced a range of 21 Matter-compatible products on November 6, 2025, covering lighting, sensors, plugs, and physical controls. The US release was planned in stages, with sensors and remotes expected before lighting products. Some products arrived earlier than the originally reported schedule, and IKEA’s US catalog now lists a broad selection.

Representative products listed by IKEA include:

  • KAJPLATS smart bulbs and starter kits
  • BILRESA remotes
  • GRILLPLATS indoor smart plugs and TOFSMYGGA outdoor smart plugs
  • MYGGSPRAY motion sensors
  • MYGGBETT door and window sensors
  • TIMMERFLOTTE temperature and humidity sensors
  • ALPSTUGA air-quality sensors
  • VARMBLIXT and other Matter-labeled lighting products

These listings establish online availability, not guaranteed stock at every US store. Check the product page for shipping and pickup information before making a trip.

IKEA 203.033.17 Trådfri Remote Control
  • You can use TRÅDFRI remote to control up to 10 LED light bulbs at a time - dim, switch on and off, choose colors and step by step change from warm to cold light.
  • You can use TRÅDFRI gateway and app to create several groups of light sources and control them in different ways.
  • The remote control works with TRÅDFRI bulbs.
  • With TRÅDFRI remote control you can dim your lights without a hardwired installation.
  • A magnet makes it easy to attach the remote control to the wall bracket.

IKEA’s US smart-home catalog is the best place to check the current range.

The original rollout was staggered

IKEA’s November 2025 announcement described the full 21-product range, but the US launch was not simultaneous. Contemporary reporting indicated that sensors and remotes were expected around January 2026, while lighting products and the smart plug were originally targeted for around April.

Those dates should be treated as rollout targets, not current availability deadlines. Some devices appeared online or in stores ahead of schedule, and IKEA’s current catalog is more useful than the original announcement for determining what can be bought now.

What Matter over Thread means

Matter is the smart-home standard that helps devices work across ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings. Thread is the low-power wireless network used by many of IKEA’s newer devices.

They are not the same thing:

  • A Matter controller commissions and controls Matter devices.
  • A Thread Border Router connects a Thread network to the rest of the home network.
  • A Matter bridge exposes devices using another protocol—such as older IKEA Zigbee products—to a Matter ecosystem.

A device can therefore be Matter-compatible while still requiring more hardware than a phone and Wi-Fi connection. This matters most for battery-powered sensors, which generally cannot act as Thread routers themselves.

Device What to check
Smart bulb A compatible Matter controller and the required Thread support for the chosen setup
Smart plug Whether the exact model is intended for indoor or outdoor use and which Matter features it supports
Battery sensor A Thread Border Router; the sensor cannot provide that network function itself
Remote Whether the chosen platform supports its buttons or rotary controls as expected
Older TRÅDFRI product DIRIGERA or another supported route for bridging the older IKEA protocol

Do you need the DIRIGERA hub?

Not necessarily—but “no DIRIGERA required” does not mean “no hub or controller required.” IKEA says its Matter products can be added to compatible ecosystems including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Homey. The exact hardware requirements depend on the product and platform.

Your situation Is DIRIGERA required?
You already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router Not necessarily
You want to use IKEA Home smart and IKEA automations Recommended
You want to connect battery-powered Thread sensors without another Border Router DIRIGERA or another Thread Border Router is required
You want to combine new devices with older TRÅDFRI products DIRIGERA is the simplest and most central option
You want the simplest IKEA-managed setup Recommended

DIRIGERA functions as both a Matter controller and a bridge for supported older IKEA devices. Its price has appeared at different levels in retrieved IKEA listings, so check the live US product page rather than relying on an old price.

Older TRÅDFRI products have not been converted into native Matter-over-Thread devices. DIRIGERA can bridge supported products into a Matter setup, which is different from changing the protocol inside the products themselves.

KAJPLATS bulbs: check the details before buying

The KAJPLATS range includes E26 and E12 bulbs, white-spectrum models, color-and-white-spectrum models, and different brightness levels. IKEA’s US listings include examples such as an E26 1600-lumen white-spectrum bulb listed at $13.99 per pack at the time of retrieval.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Whether your fixture uses an E26 or E12 socket
  • Whether the listing is for one bulb or a multipack
  • Whether you want adjustable white light or color-and-white-spectrum capability
  • Whether a remote is included
  • Whether the hub and batteries are sold separately

Starter kits generally include a remote, while standalone bulbs generally do not. A white-spectrum bulb is also not equivalent to a full-color model.

See IKEA’s white-spectrum starter kit, color-and-white-spectrum starter kit, and E26 bulb listing for current specifications.

BILRESA remotes are not hubs

BILRESA provides physical Matter-compatible control, but it does not replace a Matter controller or Thread infrastructure. IKEA lists dual-button and scroll-wheel versions. The scroll-wheel model can control up to three groups, while IKEA says the dual-button version can control up to 10 products per remote.

  • POWERFUL ENERGY SAVINGS: Automate your home to save energy, or schedule your usage according to solar generation. Save on your energy bill without losing any comfort.

The scroll-wheel remote uses Matter over Thread, and IKEA says a Thread Border Router is needed for phone-based control. The dual-button kit should likewise be evaluated within the requirements of the Matter platform you plan to use.

Plugs and sensors

GRILLPLATS is IKEA’s new smart-plug line, while TOFSMYGGA is an outdoor-oriented plug listing. Indoor and outdoor products are not interchangeable: check the exact product’s environmental rating and intended use. Also verify whether the model you select includes energy monitoring, since that should not be assumed from the word “smart.”

The sensor range covers several common uses:

  • MYGGSPRAY: motion
  • MYGGBETT: door and window status
  • TIMMERFLOTTE: temperature and humidity
  • ALPSTUGA: air quality
  • KLIPPBOK: water leaks where offered in the relevant catalog

For sensors, the key buying question is not only the sensor price. Confirm that your existing smart-home system includes a Thread Border Router or budget for DIRIGERA or another compatible device.

Which platforms work?

IKEA product pages name compatibility with Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey, and Samsung. IKEA’s guide specifically discusses Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa, while Samsung has announced integration for IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices in SmartThings.

Compatibility does not guarantee identical features. Basic on/off control, dimming, sensor readings, and automations may work across platforms, while grouping, scenes, firmware updates, advanced lighting behavior, or remote controls can vary by platform and device.

Check the exact product page and the documentation for your chosen platform. Do not assume that every feature available in IKEA Home smart will appear identically in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Homey.

How to set up an IKEA Matter device

  1. Identify the exact product and confirm whether it uses Matter over Thread.
  2. Confirm that your home has a Matter controller.
  3. For Thread devices, confirm that you also have a Thread Border Router.
  4. Put the IKEA device into pairing mode according to its instructions.
  5. Open the IKEA app or your preferred Matter platform.
  6. Scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric Matter setup code.
  7. Assign the device to a room and test its main function.
  8. If needed, share it with another Matter ecosystem using multi-admin support.

IKEA says the QR code is on the yellow cover in the packaging. If scanning fails, use the 11-digit numeric code instead. DIRIGERA users should also meet the app requirements listed by IKEA, including iOS 16.4 or later or Android 10 or later for the IKEA Home smart app.

If pairing or connectivity fails

  • Confirm that the device has been reset and is actually in pairing mode.
  • Use the numeric Matter code if the QR code will not scan.
  • Enable Bluetooth during commissioning where the platform requires it.
  • Check that the phone and Matter controller are connected to the expected home network.
  • For a battery sensor, verify that a Thread Border Router is operational.
  • Update the IKEA Home smart app, DIRIGERA firmware, and the chosen smart-home platform.
  • Remove a partially added device before trying a fresh pairing.
  • If third-party onboarding fails, try adding the device through IKEA’s ecosystem first, then share it to another Matter platform.

Offline behavior can result from weak Wi-Fi or Thread connectivity or from the absence of an active controller. That does not by itself establish a general reliability problem with the entire product line; individual reports and early coverage should be treated as anecdotal rather than as a controlled failure rate.

Are IKEA’s new Matter devices worth buying?

They are most compelling for buyers who already own a Matter- and Thread-capable setup, want inexpensive bulbs or sensors, or prefer physical remotes. Existing IKEA owners may get additional value from DIRIGERA because it can bring older IKEA products and new Matter devices into one IKEA-centered system.

The value is less clear if you expect every product to work with only Wi-Fi and a phone. The least expensive sensor can become a more expensive purchase once you add a Thread Border Router or DIRIGERA, and platform behavior may differ across Apple, Google, Alexa, SmartThings, and Homey.

Before buying, check three things: the exact US product listing, the device’s socket or environmental requirements, and whether your current system supplies both the Matter controller and Thread functionality the device needs.
