To create a winter landscape with lasting shape and color, choose a few evergreens that fit your site and mature space, then arrange them to contrast in form, foliage color, and texture. Start with the winter view you want to improve and check hardiness, light, soil, wind, drainage, salt exposure, and mature size before choosing plants.

Evergreens include both needle-bearing conifers and broadleaf plants that retain foliage. They can anchor a view, add vertical structure, or soften a bed’s front edge, but the right choice depends on local conditions—not just how a plant looks at the nursery.

Start with the winter view

Stand where you most often see the garden in winter: perhaps a kitchen window, front walk, or driveway. Notice bare sightlines, existing structures, utility conflicts, and places where one focal point could improve the view. This helps you choose a role for each evergreen instead of filling every open space.

Think in layers and contrasts. A pyramidal evergreen can act as an anchor; a columnar form can fill a genuine vertical gap; rounded or mounded plants can connect larger specimens to lower plantings; and creeping or spreading forms can soften an edge without blocking a window. Repeat a foliage color or texture for cohesion, then contrast it with a different form. The University of Minnesota Extension describes a range of evergreen forms, including pyramidal, spreading, prostrate, mounded, rounded, upright, and weeping, and advises against combining plants that look too similar in color, texture, and form.

Plan around mature dimensions, not the size of the container. Some spruce, fir, and arborvitae can reach roughly 30 feet in diameter. Some columnar arborvitae and upright junipers mature about 20–30 feet tall and 5–10 feet wide, depending on variety. These examples are not universal plant recommendations; check the mature dimensions of the specific variety and make sure it has room.

Choose plants for your site

Use the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map as a starting filter, then account for your yard’s particular conditions. USDA describes the map as based on a 30-year average of annual extreme minimum temperatures; it cannot show every small-scale difference in shelter, heat, or exposure. A zone is not a guarantee that a plant will thrive, and a changed zone alone is not a reason to remove plants already doing well.

Before buying, check these factors:

  1. Hardiness and microclimate: Note cold pockets, heat reflected from walls, and shelter from buildings or fences.
  2. Winter sun and wind: Exposed south and southwest sides and windward locations can raise winter injury risk. Match the plant’s needs to the actual exposure.
  3. Light: Check the plant’s light requirements against the hours of sun at the planting spot.
  4. Soil and water: Consider soil type, pH, drainage, and available moisture. Avoid forcing a plant into a site that stays too wet or too dry for it.
  5. Space: Confirm mature height and width, clearance from paths and windows, and room for maintenance.
  6. Salt and other local pressures: Consider de-icing spray and runoff, local pest and disease history, and wildlife browsing.

Requirements vary by species and region. Ask a local Extension service or reputable nursery for a shortlist that fits your site rather than relying on a universal list of “best” evergreens.

Understand and reduce winter burn

Winter burn, also called winter desiccation, happens when sun and wind draw moisture from evergreen foliage while frozen soil prevents roots from replacing it. Browning may appear on south, southwest, or windward sides. It is not automatically a sign of disease.

Start prevention with suitable placement and steady care. Keep evergreens adequately watered during the growing season and into fall, while avoiding both drought stress and overwatering. For new plantings, the University of Minnesota Extension recommends a 3–4-inch layer of shredded wood mulch over the root zone, pulled away from the trunk. If an exposed plant needs extra protection, a temporary burlap or similar screen on the exposed side can reduce wind and sun; leave the top open to allow air and light. Do not wrap every plant tightly, and do not rely on anti-desiccant sprays: the University of Minnesota Extension says they are not effective protection for evergreen foliage.

If foliage browns, do not remove the plant immediately. The University of Minnesota Extension notes that buds may survive and refill some areas. Wait until mid-spring to assess the damage and prune dead tissue back to living tissue. Seek local diagnosis if symptoms persist or seem unusual.

Plant for establishment

Choose healthy stock suited to the site. Make the planting hole at least 1–2 feet wider than the root system, and do not plant deeper than the original root-flare depth. For a root-bound container plant, separate or cut circling roots so they do not persist as a girdling root system. Water immediately after planting, then adjust follow-up watering to rainfall, soil moisture, soil type, and drainage rather than following a rigid calendar.

Use wood or bark mulch, keep it off the trunk, and do not place plastic under organic mulch. Planting season depends on region. For example, the University of Minnesota Extension advises against planting evergreens later than October in its climate so roots have time to establish before freezing; that date is not a nationwide rule. Check local guidance and avoid planting when soil or weather conditions are unsuitable.

Plan for snow, ice, and salt

Snow and ice can bend or break branches, particularly on upright evergreens such as arborvitae and juniper. On relatively small trees, leaders can be tied with appropriate material and the ties removed in spring. Have a qualified arborist assess structural problems in larger trees.

Keep evergreens away from places where salty runoff collects and, where possible, from intense salt spray. A screen may reduce salt spray, but it will not protect roots from salty soil. The University of Minnesota Extension notes that no species is completely salt tolerant.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose evergreens for my yard?

Start with your hardiness zone, but also check winter sun and wind, light, soil drainage, water, salt exposure, local pests, and available space. Confirm the specific plant’s mature height and width, and ask a local Extension service or nursery for regional options.

What should I plant for winter color and structure?

Choose by role and site rather than looking for one universally best plant. A conical form can anchor a view, an upright form can fill a vertical gap, and low or spreading forms can soften a bed edge. Contrast forms, colors, and textures, and check mature dimensions before planting.

Why are my evergreens browning in winter?

Should I wrap evergreens for winter?

Not every evergreen needs wrapping. If a plant is exposed to drying wind or sun, use a temporary burlap or similar screen on the exposed side and leave the top open for air and light. Proper siting, watering, and mulch are the foundations of prevention.

How much mulch should I put around a new evergreen?

The University of Minnesota Extension recommends 3–4 inches of shredded wood mulch for new plantings. Keep the mulch pulled away from the trunk, and do not put plastic under organic mulch.

Can I plant evergreens in fall?

Planting timing varies by region and conditions. Follow local Extension guidance; for example, the University of Minnesota Extension advises against planting evergreens later than October in its climate. Do not treat that regional date as a nationwide calendar rule.
