Generic plug-in “electricity-saving” boxes are not a credible way to reduce an ordinary household’s electricity use or utility bill. Recent testing found no evidence that similar products lowered household electricity costs, while U.K. safety authorities recalled several models after finding fire and electric-shock hazards. The safer approach is to reduce actual kilowatt-hour use, improve heating and cooling efficiency, and check your utility’s rates, rebates, and assistance programs.

What are electricity-saving boxes?

These products are usually small plastic enclosures that plug directly into a wall outlet. They may have a red or green indicator light and be sold as an “energy saver,” “eco plug,” “voltage stabilizer,” “power saver,” or “power-factor-saving device.” Advertisements commonly promise savings of 30%, 40%, 50%, or even 90% without changing how appliances are used.

The marketing may refer to “dirty electricity,” harmonic filtering, current balancing, sine-wave smoothing, voltage stabilization, or stopping excess electricity from entering the home. Products have also appeared under names such as StopWatt and Pro Power Saver, with scam advertising falsely invoking Elon Musk, Tesla, or Nikola Tesla. The name on the product is not evidence of a distinct or legitimate technology.

Do they reduce electricity use?

There is no credible evidence that generic plug-in boxes of this type reduce ordinary household electricity consumption measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). In an investigation published April 22, 2025, Which? tested eight similar products bought through AliExpress, Amazon, eBay, Shein, Temu, and TikTok Shop and found no evidence that they reduced household electricity costs.

Why the technical language sounds plausible

A household bill normally charges for real energy consumed over time: kWh. A plug-in box can display a light or alter an electrical measurement without making a refrigerator, heat pump, water heater, or other appliance perform the same work with substantially less real energy.

Power factor is a legitimate electrical-engineering concept. In some alternating-current systems, reactive power moves back and forth rather than producing useful work in the same way as real power. Commercial and industrial customers may face charges associated with power factor, demand, or apparent power. Properly engineered power-factor correction can be appropriate for a specific facility and its loads.

That is different from plugging a generic capacitor-based box into a residential outlet and expecting a lower kWh reading. Advanced Energy explains that household “power saver” boxes make unsupported savings claims. Homeowners should never install capacitors or modify electrical wiring without a qualified electrician.

Why might the bill look lower afterward?

A lower dollar bill after buying a device does not establish that the device caused the reduction. Bills vary because of:

  • weather and heating or cooling demand;
  • occupancy and appliance use;
  • the number of days in the billing period;
  • estimated versus actual meter readings;
  • changes in supply, delivery, or fixed charges; and
  • changes in the utility’s electricity rate.

Someone who buys a supposed energy saver may also become more conscious of usage, adjust the thermostat, turn off equipment, or run appliances less often. For a meaningful comparison, check actual kWh consumption against the same period in the previous year and account for weather and rate changes. A lower dollar total alone is weak evidence.

Why can these devices be dangerous?

The strongest safety evidence concerns specific products, particularly in the U.K. On May 5, 2022, the U.K. Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) recalled the Motex SD008 after classifying it as a serious fire and electric-shock risk. The official recall notice reported problems including:

  • a plug that did not comply with the BS 1363 standard;
  • earth, live, and neutral pins that were too short, misaligned, or weak;
  • pins that could break off in a socket;
  • a large, unmarked capacitor;
  • a low-breaking-capacity fuse that could fail dangerously during a short circuit; and
  • incorrectly specified surge-protection components.

Possible failure modes include overheating, arcing at a poor-quality plug, short circuits, unsafe capacitor failure, fire, and electric shock. OPSS also issued an April 28, 2022 safety report for an SD008 electricity-saving box and listed related products, including SD001, SD008, and PS2008D, in its 2022 enforcement records.

These were U.K. product-safety actions involving Great Britain’s BS 1363 plug standard and U.K. regulations. They are not a blanket legal ruling about every similarly named device sold in the United States. The narrower and safer conclusion is that unbranded or rebranded boxes making extraordinary household-saving claims should be treated as ineffective and potentially hazardous unless the exact product can be independently verified against applicable electrical-safety requirements.

In a May 12, 2025 follow-up, Which? reported that more than 50 similar listings remained available across major online marketplaces and that nearly identical products could reappear after individual listings were removed. Half of the tested boxes reportedly carried the same SD008 model number as products recalled in 2022.

A CE mark, a UL-looking logo, or another printed symbol is not by itself proof that a product is safe or effective. A credible product should have an identifiable manufacturer, an exact model number, certification appropriate to the country of sale, independent testing relevant to its claim, a transparent warranty and refund policy, and evidence based on measured kWh reduction—not merely lower current, lower apparent power, or an indicator light.

If you already bought or plugged one in

  1. Stop using it. If it appears normal, unplug it by gripping the plug body, not the cord.
  2. Do not open or repair it. Never dismantle or test a mains-connected device while energized.
  3. React cautiously to damage. If it is hot, smells burnt, crackles, sparks, is discolored, or has melted, switch off the circuit breaker if that can be done safely and contact a qualified electrician. Do not pull out a visibly damaged plug if doing so could expose you to live parts.
  4. Inspect the outlet from a safe distance. Heat damage, discoloration, looseness, or a burning smell means the outlet should be checked before it is used again.
  5. Check recalls. Record the exact model, seller, and country of purchase, then check the relevant product-safety database.
  6. Request a refund. Contact the seller and marketplace, keeping photographs, order details, and the listing.
  7. Dispose of it properly. Use a local electronic-waste program or ask the waste authority whether it accepts mains electrical devices. Do not place it in ordinary recycling unless the local program permits it.

What actually reduces electricity costs?

Real savings come from using fewer kWh, reducing the price paid per kWh, or both. Results depend on your climate, home, equipment, utility rates, and habits, so avoid any contractor or product promising a universal percentage.

Immediate and low-cost actions

  • Adjust heating and cooling settings when practical.
  • Use programmable or smart-thermostat schedules if compatible with your HVAC system.
  • Clean or replace HVAC filters according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Turn off lights and equipment when they are not needed.
  • Use sleep and power-management settings on computers and monitors.
  • Wash clothes at cooler settings when appropriate and air-dry them when practical.
  • Reduce unnecessary electric water-heating use.
  • Seal obvious drafts around doors and windows.
  • Use timers or smart plugs only to turn genuinely unnecessary loads off. Confirm the device’s voltage, current, and load rating, particularly for heaters, motors, refrigerators, and equipment with startup surges.

Home improvements and equipment

Air sealing, insulation, efficient HVAC equipment, heat-pump space or water heating, efficient lighting, and efficient appliances can all be worthwhile in the right home. Replacement is often most economical when an appliance or system already needs replacing. Payback depends on installation cost, climate, existing equipment, utility rates, incentives, and expected service life.

For larger projects, a professional home energy audit can identify air leakage, insulation problems, HVAC issues, water-heating losses, and inefficient appliances before you spend money. The Federal Trade Commission recommends home energy audits as a legitimate way to find savings and warns consumers about energy-related scams. Ask what testing is included and whether the auditor receives referral commissions.

Understand your utility bill

Separate kWh usage from supply charges, delivery charges, taxes, and fixed fees. Check whether your utility offers time-of-use rates, rebates, demand-response programs, weatherization support, bill assistance, or an audit. Time-of-use pricing can help households that shift usage to cheaper periods, but it can cost more if your normal usage occurs during expensive periods. Confirm eligibility and current terms with the official utility or state energy-office website.

Monitoring versus saving

An energy monitor can show which circuits or appliances use electricity, but monitoring alone does not lower consumption. A smart plug saves only when it controls a load and prevents unnecessary operation. Efficiency improvements deliver the same service with less energy. Solar panels and batteries can reduce purchased electricity, but their economics depend on location, incentives, financing, installation quality, and service life.

Bottom line

Do not buy a generic plug-in electricity-saving box because it promises dramatic savings without independently measured kWh evidence. Similar products have shown no credible household savings, and some specific models have been recalled for serious safety defects. Put your money toward measures that actually reduce consumption or identify where your home is using electricity: thermostat controls, maintenance, air sealing, insulation, efficient equipment, qualified energy audits, and verified utility programs.
