The company used its separate Dyson Unveiled event during IFA season to present 11 new or upgraded products, including the manual V16 Piston Animal cordless vacuum and the autonomous Spot+Scrub Ai robot vacuum-mop.
The V16 is aimed at pet owners and mixed-floor homes that want powerful manual cleaning. The Spot+Scrub Ai is aimed mainly at hard-floor homes seeking automated vacuuming and mopping. Neither eliminates routine maintenance, and the Spot+Scrub’s current U.S. price of $1,199.99 makes competing robot vacuums an important part of the buying decision.

What Dyson announced in Berlin
Dyson announced the V16 Piston Animal on September 4, 2025, while its broader Berlin presentation ran from September 4–5. Dyson described the event as Dyson Unveiled and stated that it did not have a presence at IFA Berlin 2025. The most accurate description is therefore “Dyson’s IFA-season Berlin announcements,” rather than products unveiled from a Dyson IFA booth.

These are not direct substitutes. One is a manually operated vacuum designed for controlled, high-intensity cleaning; the other is a connected robot designed to maintain floors with limited supervision.
Dyson V16 Piston Animal: the manual cordless vacuum
The V16 Piston Animal is Dyson’s premium cordless stick vacuum for carpet, hard floors and pet-related mess. Dyson specifies a 900-watt Hyperdymium motor and claims up to 315 air watts of fade-free suction. That figure is a Dyson specification, not proof that it will outperform every rival on every surface.
Key features
- All Floor Cones Sense head: Its dual-conical design is intended to separate and eject long hair into the bin rather than allowing it to wrap around the brush bar.
- Automatic floor sensing: The cleaner head adjusts its behavior for different floor types, reducing the need to change settings manually.
- Dust illumination: Built-in lighting is intended to make fine dust easier to see on hard floors.
- CleanCompaktor bin: Dyson says the system compresses debris and can hold up to 30 days of dust, although actual capacity depends on household size, debris volume and cleaning frequency.
- Hair handling: Dyson says the head can detangle hair up to 25 inches long. This should be treated as an attributed engineering claim rather than a universal independently proven result.
The V16’s pitch is therefore broader than suction alone: it addresses brush-bar tangles, inefficient bin space and frequent manual floor-mode changes. Independent testing remains important, particularly because some coverage has questioned the floorhead design even while recognizing the vacuum’s strong core performance. TechRadar’s review is one source of that criticism.

The standard V16 Piston Animal does not wash floors. The separate V16 Piston Animal Submarine adds Dyson’s Submarine 2.0 wet-cleaning head for hard floors. Buyers should not assume that the regular model can gain wet-cleaning functionality through an accessory, or that every existing V-series accessory is compatible. Check the exact model and market before buying batteries, heads, filters or attachments.

The Submarine version may suit homes with frequent wet spills and mostly hard flooring, but it adds weight, cleaning steps and a more complex wet-cleaning system. It is not the obvious choice for predominantly carpeted homes or anyone wanting unattended cleaning.
Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai: a vacuum-mop robot focused on stains
The Spot+Scrub Ai is Dyson’s first robot designed for both wet and dry floor cleaning. Its differentiating idea is active stain detection: rather than simply following a schedule, it uses cameras, green floor illumination and AI-based recognition to decide what it sees and how it should respond.
How the stain-recognition system works
- The robot shines a high-contrast green light across the floor.
- Its camera system examines visible debris, stains, spills and obstacles.
- AI attempts to classify what it sees.
- The robot chooses whether to clean, avoid the object or make additional passes.
- It checks the area again after cleaning.
- For difficult stains, Dyson says it can make up to 15 passes.
Dyson’s object-recognition figures vary by market and wording. The U.S. product page says it recognizes more than 100 objects, while international material refers to approximately 200 types of objects, substances, stains and obstacles. Those numbers should not be treated as interchangeable. Recognition also does not guarantee successful pickup: a robot may identify a large pile, cable or other item and avoid it instead of cleaning it.

Navigation uses LiDAR mapping, while the MyDyson app allows users to view maps and adjust room labels. The machine also has an edge-reaching roller extension intended to reduce the uncleaned strip along walls.

Wet-cleaning and dock system
The wet roller is continuously supplied with clean water through a 12-point hydration system. Dyson says the roller is washed on every rotation. The dock automatically recharges the robot, empties dry debris, refills clean water, collects dirty water, washes and dries the roller, and manages cleaning solution dosing where specified.
Dyson’s launch material claims up to 100 days of dry-debris storage in the bagless cyclonic dock. That is a usage-dependent estimate, not a guarantee. The amount of debris produced, cleaning frequency and household conditions will determine how often the dock needs attention.
The technical guide lists 0.6-gallon clean- and dirty-water tanks, three-hour charging, roller washing with water listed at 140°C and roller drying with air listed at 113°C. These are manufacturer instructions and specifications, not proof that the dock remains hygienic without owner maintenance.

Runtime is a maximum specification and will vary with cleaning mode, floor type, navigation and wet-cleaning behavior. Pa ratings should not be compared directly with air-watt figures such as the V16’s 315 AW; they measure different things.

Does Spot+Scrub Ai replace mopping?
Not completely. The robot may reduce routine floor maintenance, especially in homes with mostly hard flooring and recurring small spills. However, independent reviews have generally viewed it as a stronger robot vacuum than a complete replacement for human mopping. TechRadar, Homes & Gardens and Tom’s Guide provide useful independent context.
Owners should still expect to clean corners, stairs and blocked areas manually, deal with substances the robot avoids, manage clutter and perform occasional deeper cleaning. Water tanks, drainage paths, filters, roller areas and contact points also require inspection and cleaning.
Before using it on wood or other sensitive flooring, check the floor manufacturer’s requirements for water, cleaning solution and drying. Also confirm rug behavior, no-mop settings and threshold compatibility for the specific home.

Who should buy each machine?
Choose the V16 Piston Animal if you:
- Have substantial carpet alongside hard flooring.
- Own pets and regularly deal with long hair.
- Want a powerful primary cordless vacuum under your direct control.
- Prefer not to use robot cameras, mapping or connected-app features.
- Need to clean stairs, furniture and awkward areas.
It is a poor fit if you want an especially light secondary vacuum, maximum value from a corded upright or automated floor washing. Its U.S. announcement confirmed availability during 2026 but did not establish a precise release date or price in the cited material, so those details require confirmation from Dyson’s current product page.

Choose the Spot+Scrub Ai if you:
- Have mostly hard floors.
- Want frequent autonomous vacuuming and wet cleaning.
- Deal with recurring small spills or tracked-in dirt.
- Value a bagless dock and automatically washed roller.
- Can provide a clear route and adequate space for its large dock.
It is a poor fit for thick-rug-heavy homes, highly cluttered rooms, large piles of pet hair or debris, and buyers whose main priority is value. Camera, app, Wi-Fi and connected-appliance considerations also matter for privacy-sensitive households.
Alternatives worth considering
At $1,199.99, the Spot+Scrub Ai competes with premium robots from Roborock and Dreame, as well as products from Narwal and Ecovacs. Dreame models may appeal to buyers prioritizing advanced mopping and feature density, while Roborock offers a broad navigation and mapping ecosystem. More value-oriented Shark robot products are worth considering when stain recognition is less important than lower cost.
For manual cleaning, Shark cordless vacuums are alternatives for shoppers seeking anti-hair-wrap features without paying Dyson’s premium. A conventional corded upright remains the value-focused option for homes that prioritize sustained carpet cleaning over cordless convenience. Current prices and availability fluctuate, so compare exact models rather than relying on brand-level assumptions. Independent comparison context is available from RTINGS.
Bottom line
Dyson’s IFA-season reveal introduced two different answers to two different cleaning problems. The V16 Piston Animal targets manual deep cleaning, pet hair and mixed floors; the Spot+Scrub Ai targets autonomous hard-floor maintenance and stain-focused wet cleaning.
The V16 is the more logical choice for carpet, stairs, pets and hands-on control. The Spot+Scrub Ai is more compelling for hard-floor homes that will actually use its autonomous features, but its premium price and continuing water-system maintenance weaken the case for buyers seeking simple value. Dyson’s central promise is reduced cleaning friction—not a home that never needs human attention.
