EclipsEdge is a prefabricated roof-edge metal system intended to make edge work on single-ply roofs more repeatable. Mule-Hide’s current product page describes it as a “three-piece snap-on fascia for single-ply applications,” sized in 12-foot lengths with pre-punched and slotted fastening holes, concealed splice plates and a snap-on cover. Those features can reduce field fabrication, but they do not remove the need to match the edge to the membrane, substrate, tested assembly and local code.
The name is also used differently in older coverage. A July 17, 2017 Building Design + Construction article described EclipseEdge as a two-part base-and-cover profile for raised roof edges, gravel stops and full coping caps. Treat that description as historical; use the current manufacturer documents for today’s configuration, available materials and installation requirements.

What EclipsEdge is designed to do
Roof-edge metal terminates the membrane at a parapet or perimeter, protects the exposed edge and creates the finished line for a raised edge, gravel stop or coping condition. The system has to resist wind and weather while remaining compatible with the roof assembly beneath it. EclipsEdge is one prefabricated approach for single-ply work rather than a generic piece of bent sheet metal.
Current single-ply configuration
Mule-Hide currently lists EclipsEdge for EPDM, TPO and PVC single-ply applications. The page calls it a three-piece snap-on fascia and lists these installation-oriented features:
#1 Best Overall
- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach

- 12-foot lengths for longer, more consistent runs.
- Pre-punched and slotted fastening holes to support layout and adjustment.
- Concealed splice plates to cover joints between lengths.
- A snap-on cover that provides the visible finished face.
Those are product features, not a complete specification. The current product data, details and installation instructions control the required substrate, fastener type, spacing, membrane treatment and edge geometry for a particular project.
Separate versions for other roof systems
EclipsEdge MB is a separate listing for built-up and modified-bitumen roofs. Its page describes a snap-on cover and states that the product is tested per ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1. That statement belongs to the MB product page; it should not be transferred automatically to the single-ply EclipsEdge listing.
Mule-Hide also lists a separate Coping system for EPDM, TPO, PVC and ModBit systems. The coping page states ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 testing and identifies 12-foot lengths. A coping cap, an edge fascia and a gravel stop can look similar in a catalog, but their geometry and tested assemblies may differ. Select by the roof detail and approved assembly, not by appearance alone.

The historical article by David Malone, published July 17, 2017, explains why the system was promoted as an easier alternative to assembling conventional edge metal. Its details describe the design at that time; confirm every item against current documents before using it as a specification.
Base-and-cover assembly
The 2017 article described a two-part profile: a base secured at the perimeter and a cover that finishes the face. Instead of fabricating and fastening a separate metal component for each visible transition, the installer could set the base, deal with the membrane and substrate, then attach the cover. The current manufacturer page now describes a three-piece snap-on fascia, so the number and naming of components should be verified on the current shop drawings or installation manual.
Fastening focused at the edge
According to the 2017 account, the horizontal roof surface was not fastened as part of the profile. Fasteners were placed through the edge base rather than across the membrane field. That can simplify membrane detailing, but it does not mean the roof edge can be attached to any substrate with any screw. Fastener selection, spacing, embedment and the capacity of the edge blocking remain project-specific and must come from the current assembly details.
Joint treatment and clips
The article said notched ends of the top cover allowed joint covers to be omitted because the cover ends interlocked or aligned without an additional visible cap. It also reported that a continuous clip could be omitted when the face dimension exceeded four inches. These are dated article statements, not universal rules. Edge dimensions, wind-zone requirements and the current profile may change whether a splice plate, clip or other restraint is required.

Pre-punched holes and field tools
The 2017 description included pre-punched fastener holes and installation with battery-operated equipment. Pre-punching can speed repetitive layout and reduce drilling on the roof, while portable tools avoid running cords to every work area. The current page independently confirms pre-punched and slotted holes; it does not establish a particular tool, labor rate or installation time.
Historical description versus current product page
| Point | 2017 Building Design + Construction article | Current manufacturer information |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | Described as a two-part base-and-cover profile. | Described as a three-piece snap-on fascia for single-ply applications. |
| Roof uses | Raised roof edges, gravel stops and full coping caps on single-ply systems. | EPDM, TPO and PVC single-ply applications. |
| Length | Not stated in the article excerpt. | 12-foot lengths. |
| Fastening preparation | Pre-punched holes; article also discussed slotted fastening and edge-focused attachment. | Pre-punched and slotted fastening holes. |
| Joint treatment | Notched cover ends were said to avoid separate joint covers. | Concealed splice plates are listed. |
| Cover attachment | Cover installed over the base. | Snap-on cover. |
| Compliance statement | Article referred to ANSI/SPRI ES-1 compliance. | Use current product-specific testing and approval documents; the single-ply page should be checked directly. |
The apparent difference is not necessarily a contradiction. Product descriptions can change as profiles are revised, renamed or presented for different markets. For a current project, the manufacturer’s latest data sheet, detail drawings and installation instructions take precedence over a 2017 magazine description.
Choosing among EclipsEdge, EclipsEdge MB and coping
Start with the roof membrane and edge detail, then confirm the tested assembly. The following comparison captures what the cited product pages actually state:
| System | Manufacturer-stated application | Published features or testing | What still must be verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| EclipsEdge | EPDM, TPO and PVC single-ply | Three-piece snap-on fascia; 12-foot lengths; pre-punched and slotted holes; concealed splice plates. | Current fastening schedule, substrate, edge dimensions, membrane detail, finish availability and project approvals. |
| EclipsEdge MB | Built-up and modified-bitumen roofs | Snap-on cover; page states ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 testing. | Exact tested assembly, base and cover materials, fasteners, blocking and details for the roof being built. |
| Mule-Hide Coping | EPDM, TPO, PVC and ModBit systems | 12-foot lengths; page states ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 testing. | Whether the coping geometry fits the parapet, membrane termination, corners, joints and local code conditions. |
Do not rank these systems by a single testing label or by the promise of faster installation. A compliant choice depends on the complete roof-edge assembly, including the membrane manufacturer’s requirements, edge blocking, fasteners, joint movement, corners and wind exposure.

The sequence below is a planning framework. The current product instructions and approved details supply the dimensions and fastening values that are intentionally not generalized here.
- Identify the membrane and roof construction. Record whether the roof is EPDM, TPO, PVC, built-up or modified bitumen. Confirm whether the edge is a raised fascia, gravel stop or coping condition.
- Measure the edge geometry. Document face height, flange widths, parapet thickness, outside and inside corners, transitions and locations where the edge changes. The historical article’s statements about clips and cover notches cannot be applied without these dimensions.
- Check the substrate and blocking. Verify that continuous edge blocking or another approved substrate exists where the current detail requires it. Confirm fastener length, corrosion resistance, spacing and embedment from the product documents and structural requirements.
- Review current technical documents. Download the latest EclipsEdge or EclipsEdge MB product data and installation documents from the manufacturer page. Check revision dates, approved membrane combinations, tested assemblies, details for corners and transitions, and any limitations.
- Plan the 12-foot runs and joints. Lay out lengths to minimize unnecessary joints, mark splice locations and account for thermal movement. Use the specified concealed splice plates or joint treatment; do not substitute a field-made cover because an older article described a different joint method.
- Install the base or supporting components. Follow the current fastening pattern and substrate requirements. Keep the membrane termination, laps, sealants and protection layers in the order shown by the approved detail.
- Fit splice plates and the cover. Install concealed splice components and snap the cover or fascia into place as directed. Check that the cover is fully engaged along the run and that corners, end conditions and transitions are secured with the specified parts.
- Inspect before closeout. Verify fastener engagement, straightness, cover seating, joint movement, membrane continuity, exposed metal damage and compatibility with adjacent sheet metal. Photograph concealed work and record the product and document revisions used.
Materials and gauges reported in the 2017 article
The 2017 article listed material options for the profile at that time. These figures are historical specifications, not confirmation of current stock or a promise that every finish remains available:
| Component or option | Material described in 2017 | Status to confirm today |
|---|---|---|
| Base | 22-gauge GALVALUME Plus steel or 0.050-gauge aluminum. | Current gauge, alloy, coating and availability are not stated on the reviewed current page. |
| Cover | 24-gauge GALVALUME with mill or Kynar finish; 24-gauge stainless steel; or 0.040-gauge aluminum with mill or Kynar finish. | Current cover materials, finishes and gauges require confirmation in product data. |
“Kynar” in that historical list refers to a finish designation used in the article, not a guarantee that a current color or coating is offered. Match the finish to the project’s metal schedule and confirm compatibility with adjacent flashings.

Compliance, testing and documentation
ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 is an assembly-testing reference for edge-metal performance. The EclipsEdge MB page and the separate coping page state that testing; the reviewed single-ply EclipsEdge page does not provide the same statement in the cited description. A specifier should therefore obtain the current single-ply approval or test documentation rather than copying the MB or coping claim into a single-ply specification.
Before ordering, the designer, roofing contractor and code official should reconcile:
- Roof membrane manufacturer and system warranty requirements.
- Edge blocking material, thickness and continuity.
- Fastener type, corrosion resistance, spacing and pull-out capacity.
- Wind-design pressures and the tested assembly for the building’s exposure.
- Parapet height, face dimension, corners, end dams and changes in direction.
- Thermal movement, splice treatment and sealant requirements.
- Local building-code provisions and inspection documentation.
Because the full current installation instructions and detail drawings were not reviewed here, those documents should be treated as mandatory submittals, not optional background reading.
What “easier installation” does—and does not—mean
The 2017 article said the profile promised time and material-cost savings, but it supplied no measured labor hours, waste study or dollar figure. The sensible interpretation is process savings: factory-formed parts, pre-punched holes, a snap-on cover and concealed joint pieces may reduce cutting, drilling and separate trim operations on a repetitive run. Actual productivity depends on roof access, crew experience, corners, transitions, substrate repairs, weather and inspection requirements.
The system also does not eliminate layout or quality-control work. A poorly prepared edge, incorrect fastener or incompatible membrane detail can compromise the roof even when the visible fascia snaps into place. Treat prefabrication as a way to control steps, not as permission to skip engineering or manufacturer instructions.

Bottom line for specifiers and installers
EclipsEdge can simplify single-ply roof-edge work by combining formed components, prepared fastening holes, concealed joints and a snap-on finish. The current product is presented as a three-piece fascia for EPDM, TPO and PVC, while the 2017 article described an earlier two-part profile and additional installation behaviors. Use the historical article to understand the installation concept, but base design, ordering and compliance decisions on the latest product documents for the exact roof system, substrate and edge condition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EclipsEdge suitable for every roof membrane?
The current EclipsEdge page identifies EPDM, TPO and PVC single-ply applications. Built-up and modified-bitumen roofs are listed separately under EclipsEdge MB, and coping is a separate system. Confirm the approved assembly for the specific membrane and edge detail.
Does the single-ply EclipsEdge page establish ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 testing?
The cited single-ply description does not state that testing. The EclipsEdge MB and Coping pages do state ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 testing, but those claims should not be transferred to the single-ply product without current product-specific documentation.
Are the 2017 metal gauges still current?
Not established. The 2017 article listed 22-gauge and 24-gauge steel options and .050- and .040-gauge aluminum options, but current availability and specifications must be confirmed in today’s product data.
Who should approve the installation details?
The project designer, roofing contractor and code official should verify membrane compatibility, blocking, fasteners, wind requirements, tested assembly and local code provisions against the manufacturer’s current documents before installation.
