Maintain an existing basement drainage system as a complete water-management chain: inspect the basin and pump, test activation with water, verify that discharge leaves the property, and keep every component accessible. Delta Membranes recommends annual service by a qualified engineer for its sump pumps, increasing examinations to every six months where high water tables, drainage conditions or weather make the pump run more often. That is a manufacturer recommendation for Delta systems, not a universal rule for every installation.
Homeowners can perform visual checks and a controlled water test. Electrical faults, stuck floats, battery problems, blocked pump openings or water returning to the home require a qualified plumber or drainage contractor.

What a basement drainage system does
Foundation drainage collects water at or around the foundation and directs it either to daylight, another approved discharge point or a sump pit. The sump pump then moves water from the pit away from the building. Maintenance is therefore not just “checking the pump”; it is checking the collection path, the pit, the pumping equipment, the discharge route and any backup controls as one system.

Identify the equipment before you test it
Start by recording what is installed. Find the pump model and manual, the location of the basin, the power outlet, the discharge pipe, any alarm or control panel and any battery enclosure. Note whether there is one pump or a primary-and-secondary arrangement. Keep photographs of pipe connections and control settings with the property records.
That information prevents a common maintenance error: buying a generic part without checking compatibility. A backup pump, battery or alarm must match the existing basin, pump controls, discharge arrangement and available power. If you cannot identify a component, ask the installer or a qualified drainage professional before changing it.
| Component | Maintenance purpose |
|---|---|
| Perimeter channels or foundation drains | Collect water and convey it toward the sump or an approved outlet. |
| Sump chamber and lid | Contain collected water while keeping the pump and float accessible for inspection. |
| Primary pump | Moves water out of the sump during normal operation. |
| Secondary pump | Provides an additional pumping route where the installed system includes one. |
| High-level alarm or control panel | Signals a rising water level or manages connected equipment. |
| Battery backup | Supplies backup power when the system has been designed to use it. |
| Discharge pipe | Carries pumped water to daylight, a dry well, an approved storm sewer connection or another suitable destination. |
Set a schedule that reflects the installed system
There is no single maintenance interval that applies to every basement drainage system. Use the pump manufacturer’s instructions first, then adjust the level of professional attention to how hard the system works and how complex it is.

- Read the pump instructions first. Confirm how the float or level sensor is meant to move, whether the lid can be removed safely and how the pump is powered. Do not begin electrical work.
- Open the basin carefully. Remove the lid so you can see the pump, float and pit. Keep the opening clear and avoid dropping tools or objects into the chamber.
- Inspect the pit and pump. Look for debris that could interfere with the float or pump opening. If you need to inspect the opening or remove material near the pump, unplug the pump before doing so, as Halton advises.
- Remove only accessible debris. Clear material that is visibly obstructing operation without dismantling electrical or sealed components. If the obstruction cannot be removed safely, stop and call a qualified professional.
- Restore safe conditions before testing. Replace guards or position the pump as instructed by its manual. Keep hands clear of the pump opening and reconnect power only when you are ready to conduct the test.
- Add water to raise the float. Pour enough clean water into the basin to lift the float or activate the level sensor. The pump should start according to its normal control sequence.
- Watch the complete cycle. Confirm that the pump starts, lowers the water level and stops without unusual behavior. Do not hold or force a float to make the pump run.
- Check the discharge outside. Go to the outlet while the pump operates and verify that water exits freely. A pump that runs without a visible, free-flowing discharge needs investigation.
- Close and document. Refit the lid, leave the access area clear and record the date, result, observed discharge and any corrective action.
A water test demonstrates that the float, pump and discharge route operated at that moment. It does not prove that a battery will carry the load during an outage, that a secondary pump will start or that concealed channels are free of every obstruction. Those items need their own inspection or professional commissioning where installed.
If the sump pump does not turn on
Do not repeatedly pour water into a rising pit while guessing at the cause. Use this decision sequence and stop before any task that involves electrical work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the grounded outlet
Halton’s guidance begins with the power source. Confirm that the pump is connected to the grounded outlet specified by the installation and that the connection has not been unintentionally disconnected. Do not open the outlet, alter wiring or bypass protective devices. An electrician or qualified drainage professional should handle an electrical concern.
Check whether the float is stuck
With power disconnected, look for a lid, pipe, cable or debris preventing the float from moving. The float must be able to rise as water enters the basin. If it remains trapped or the control does not respond after the obstruction is removed, arrange professional service rather than forcing the mechanism.
Check the pump opening for debris
Unplug the pump before inspecting the opening. Remove only accessible material that clearly interferes with operation. A pump that still fails to start, makes an abnormal sound or trips protection needs a qualified diagnosis.

Consider battery and control equipment
If the installation includes a battery backup, alarm or control panel, check its visible status indicators and follow the manufacturer’s test procedure. A depleted battery, alarm fault or incompatible replacement can leave the primary pump apparently functional while the backup system is unavailable. Battery testing and control-panel repairs should follow the equipment manual or be performed by a qualified professional.

Escalate when water returns to the home
Halton specifically advises qualified help for electrical, float, battery or debris concerns affecting operation and when pumped water appears to return to the home. A professional can determine whether the fault is in the pump, check valve, discharge route, control system or drainage design without exposing you to electrical or flooding hazards.
How to tell whether the discharge path is blocked
The simplest homeowner check is observation at the exterior outlet during the water test: water should leave the pipe freely and the flow should not appear to return toward the building. If the pump runs but no water exits, the outlet flow is weak or water backs up into the home, stop relying on the pump and call a qualified plumber or drainage contractor.
Building America Solution Center describes several possible destinations for footing-drain water: daylight, a dry well, a storm sewer where the municipality permits that connection, or a sump pump that moves water to a suitable destination. The correct route depends on the building design and local requirements. Never connect or reconnect a discharge to a storm sewer without approval from the responsible municipality.
Keep the discharge outlet accessible so it can be observed during a test. Do not bury, cap or permanently conceal a point that the maintenance instructions require you to inspect. If the outlet arrangement has changed since installation, have a professional confirm that the new route remains suitable and compliant.

Professional service and Delta Type C systems
Delta Membranes recommends annual examination and service by a qualified engineer for its sump pumps. Where a pump runs more frequently because of a high water table, drainage conditions or weather, Delta recommends examination every six months. These intervals reflect Delta’s own equipment and guidance; they are not a guarantee that another manufacturer or drainage design can use the same schedule.
For Delta Type C cavity drainage systems, the manufacturer’s guidance says channels and sumps should be tested after installation, pumping devices should be checked and commissioned by a suitably qualified engineer, and maintenance requirements should be written into the operational and maintenance manual. It calls for an initial inspection at handover and another within the first three months. The purpose is to establish that the installed channels, sump and pumping controls work together before routine operation begins.
During professional service, provide the engineer with the installation drawings, pump manuals, previous service notes, alarm history and any record of water returning to the property. Ask the engineer to identify the discharge destination, confirm the backup arrangement and note parts that are approaching replacement. Keep the completed report with the building records.

Some systems are designed with a secondary pump, high-level alarm or control panel and battery backup. The Government of Canada’s guidance on private-side drainage also treats sump systems and backup systems as part of basement flood-risk management. These components can add resilience, but the presence of a backup product does not make the system maintenance-free.

| Option | Questions to answer before installation or replacement |
|---|---|
| Secondary pump | Does it fit the basin, discharge arrangement and control logic? Can it operate without obstructing the primary pump or float? |
| High-level alarm or control panel | What water level activates it, how is the alert communicated, and who is responsible for responding? |
| Battery backup | What battery type and capacity are compatible, how is runtime verified, and how will the battery be inspected or replaced? |
| Combined backup system | Can the pump, alarm, controls and power source be tested together, and are their maintenance instructions recorded in one manual? |
Compare these options by compatibility with the installed pump and basin, backup-power needs and runtime, alarm or notification method, installation requirements and maintenance instructions. Confirm specifications with the system manufacturer or a qualified installer. The available information does not establish that every home needs any particular backup product or that one model is suitable for all basements.

Keep every component accessible
Access is a maintenance requirement, not a convenience. Delta’s Type C guidance states: “all components of the system should be accessible for both inspection and maintenance.” Do not build storage, flooring or a permanent enclosure over the sump, alarm, control panel, battery or inspection points. Keep enough working space to remove the lid, observe the float and reach the isolation or power controls as directed by the equipment manual.
If a renovation has covered an access point, do not cut into waterproofing or structural elements by guesswork. Ask a qualified contractor to restore serviceable access and to document any change to the drainage layout.
Records that make future maintenance safer
A clear record lets the next homeowner, property manager or engineer understand the system without trial and error. Keep:
- the pump, alarm, control-panel and battery model numbers;
- the installation date, installer and drainage-system type;
- a sketch or photograph showing the basin, channels, discharge outlet and power source;
- the manufacturer manuals and operational and maintenance instructions;
- dates and results of water-activation tests;
- professional service reports, commissioning records and parts replaced;
- alarm events, battery tests and any episode in which water returned to the building;
- municipal approvals or documentation for the discharge destination.
After every inspection, record whether the pump started, whether the float moved freely, whether water exited at the discharge and whether any debris or defect was found. A short, dated entry is more useful than relying on memory when a professional must diagnose an intermittent fault.
When to stop DIY maintenance
- The pump will not start after you have checked the specified grounded outlet, a free-moving float and accessible debris with power disconnected.
- The pump operates but water does not leave the discharge freely.
- Pumped water appears to return to the home.
- A battery, alarm, control panel or electrical connection shows a fault.
- The basin, channels or pump cannot be reached without dismantling construction or waterproofing.
- You are unsure whether a discharge connection is permitted by the municipality.
In these situations, use a qualified plumber, drainage contractor or engineer familiar with the installed system. Do not perform electrical work or continue adding water to a pit that is rising without a functioning pump.
A future-ready maintenance process
The most reliable process is simple but disciplined: identify the installed configuration, keep access clear, follow the pump manual, perform the homeowner inspection and water test, verify outside discharge, record the result and schedule qualified service at the interval appropriate to the system. For Delta equipment, that means annual professional service as the baseline recommendation and six-month examinations when operating conditions cause frequent running. For a Delta Type C installation, preserve the commissioning and early-inspection records and keep the operational and maintenance manual with the property file.
This approach treats the drainage system as a chain rather than a single appliance. A working pump cannot compensate for an inaccessible basin, a failed float, an exhausted backup battery or a discharge route that sends water back toward the foundation.
