The easiest reliable way to clean tile grout is to use a cleaner approved for your installed tile, grout, stone and sealer, let it dwell for the label’s stated time, scrub the joints with a suitable brush, rinse away all residue and dry the surface. Start gently, test any unfamiliar product in a hidden spot, and escalate to oxygen bleach or carefully controlled steam only when the materials and manufacturer instructions allow it.
Why grout cleaning is not a one-recipe job
Grout is part of an installation system, not an isolated strip of filler. The joint may be cement-based, epoxy, pre-mixed or another ready-to-use formulation. The tile may be glazed ceramic, porcelain, natural stone or a polished finish, and a sealer may protect either the grout, the tile or both. A cleaner that is harmless on one combination can etch stone, dull a polish, fade colored grout or weaken a sealer on another.

Read the care instructions for the actual grout, tile, stone and sealer before cleaning. If you cannot identify a product, use the least aggressive compatible method and test it in an inconspicuous area first. Keep the test area large enough to reveal color change, loss of sheen, softening or a residue film, and wait until it is fully dry before judging the result.

LATICRETE’s care guidance for the installations covered by its documents favors a pH-neutral cleaner for routine maintenance, while the American Cleaning Institute discusses an alkaline cleaner for cement-based grout. Those recommendations address different products and use cases; the instructions for your installed materials take priority.

What to gather before you start
- Gloves that are compatible with the cleaner’s label.
- A tile-and-grout cleaner approved for the surfaces you will treat.
- A compact grout brush or another surface-compatible soft brush.
- Clean water, a sponge or microfiber cloth, and a separate way to dry the area.
- A bucket or container that lets you replace contaminated rinse water rather than spreading it back over the joints.
Do not assume that a homemade paste or a strongly scented cleaner is safer than a labeled product. The label supplies the dilution, dwell time, ventilation and rinsing requirements that the formulation was designed around. If the label says to use a different tool, temperature or protective equipment, follow that direction instead of the general routine below.
The easy routine: loosen, scrub, rinse and dry
- Remove loose soil. Sweep or wipe away grit, hair and other loose particles before applying liquid. This keeps abrasive particles from being dragged across tile or a polished finish during scrubbing.
- Apply a compatible cleaner. Use the product at the label dilution and spread it only over the area you can keep wet for the stated dwell time. Do not let a cleaner dry on the surface unless its instructions specifically allow that.
- Allow the cleaner to work. Dwell time is part of the cleaning action. Let the solution soften soil before you agitate it; immediately scrubbing a barely wetted joint often creates more effort and can encourage excessive pressure.
- Agitate the joints. Work along the grout lines with a compact grout brush or other approved soft brush. Use controlled strokes and moderate pressure, especially on soft, polished or easily scratched surrounding surfaces. Keep the brush in the joint rather than grinding its edge into the tile.
- Rinse completely. Wipe or rinse with clean water, changing the water when it becomes cloudy or dirty. Remove loosened soil and cleaner residue before it dries back onto the installation. Several light rinses are preferable to leaving a concentrated film behind.
- Dry and inspect. Use a clean microfiber cloth or another suitable method to dry the area. Check the joints and the tile in good light after drying. A haze that appears only after evaporation usually indicates residue, not a clean surface; rinse again with clean water rather than adding a stronger chemical immediately.
Work in small sections so the cleaner remains within its intended dwell window and so you can compare a cleaned area with an untouched one. On a wall, start where runoff can be controlled. On a floor, plan a path that does not require walking across wet cleaner or freshly rinsed joints.
Choose a brush that will not damage the installation
| Surface or task | Suitable approach | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Recessed grout joints | Compact grout brush with bristles that fit the joint | Test that the bristles do not scratch adjacent tile or pull loose surface material |
| Soft, polished or scratch-sensitive tile | Soft-bristled brush or a test pad approved for the finish | Use an inconspicuous test area and inspect the sheen after drying |
| Broad tile faces with light soil | Soft cloth or sponge used with a compatible cleaner | Confirm the cloth or pad contains no abrasive particles |
| Heavily soiled joints | Grout brush, small work sections and repeated rinsing | Keep pressure controlled; more force is not a substitute for correct dwell time |
A brush sold for grout is a practical tool because its narrow head reaches the joint without requiring a large abrasive pad. The correct choice still depends on the surrounding finish, so a “grout brush” label does not remove the need for a hidden-area test.

Routine cleaning should normally use the mildest product that is approved for the installation. LATICRETE recommends a pH-neutral cleaner for routine maintenance in the installations addressed by its care sheet. The American Cleaning Institute’s cement-grout guidance discusses an alkaline cleaner and warns against acids dissolving cement. Neither statement establishes one pH as correct for every grout, tile, stone and sealer combination.

| Cleaner approach | Where the guidance applies | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| pH-neutral cleaner | Routine maintenance in LATICRETE’s referenced tile, stone and grout installations | Follow the specific care sheet and product label; finish requirements vary |
| Alkaline cleaner | American Cleaning Institute guidance discussing cement-based grout | Strong alkalies can damage some tile, grout or sealers |
| Acidic cleaner | No universal routine recommendation | Acids can dissolve cement grout and damage some stone, grout or sealers |
| Ammonia-based, abrasive or chlorine-bleach cleaner | Use only when the installed-material and product instructions permit | These products can damage surfaces or degrade sealer; repeated bleach use may discolor or weaken grout |
Never select a chemical solely because it is marketed for bathrooms or floors. Match the label to the installed materials, and treat “safe for tile” as incomplete unless the label also addresses your grout and any sealer.
For stubborn staining: an oxygen-bleach test and small-section treatment
When the routine cleaner and brushing leave a localized stain, Home Depot describes an oxygenated-bleach method. The amounts below belong to that guide; they are not a universal formula for every tile or grout installation.
- Check the grout, tile and sealer instructions to make sure an oxygen-bleach product is allowed.
- Mix 2 tablespoons of oxygenated bleach in 2 cups of warm water, following the product’s own label if it gives different directions.
- Apply the solution to a hidden area first. Let it dry fully and look for fading, etching, softening or a change in sheen.
- If the test is acceptable, treat a small section rather than flooding the entire room.
- Allow up to 15 minutes of dwell time as described by that guide, keeping the area wet and following the product label.
- Scrub the joints with a compatible brush, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry.
Chlorine bleach is a different chemical and should not be substituted casually. It can leach color from tinted grout, and repeated use may discolor or weaken grout. If a stain remains after a compatible oxygen-bleach treatment, stop escalating chemicals and re-check the manufacturer’s care instructions rather than combining products or increasing concentration.

Steam cleaning: an optional, product-specific escalation
Steam is not a blanket recommendation for grout. High heat can remove grout sealer, and some pre-mixed or ready-to-use grouts may be damaged by prolonged exposure. Use steam only when the grout manufacturer permits it, use the machine exactly as directed with water only, and observe the temperature limit for that product.

MAPEI states that “Steam cleaning your tile and grout is generally safe,” while qualifying that some pre-mixed and ready-to-use grouts can be damaged by extended high temperatures. That qualification is the operative part for an unknown installation. In a separate product context, LATICRETE’s SPECTRALOCK PRO guidance permits low-temperature steam but says, “Industrial-type steam cleaners which generate temperatures exceeding 250˚F (121˚C) are not recommended.” The 250°F (121°C) limit belongs to that SPECTRALOCK FAQ, not to every grout.
Before steaming, test a hidden area, confirm the sealer may remain in place, and keep the nozzle moving rather than concentrating heat on one joint. If the installation instructions do not address steam, choose the scrub-and-rinse method instead or obtain confirmation from the grout manufacturer or installer.
Material-specific cautions
Cement-based grout
Cement grout is vulnerable to acids, which can dissolve the cement binder. Use a cleaner approved for cement grout, respect the stated dilution and dwell time, and rinse away residue. A stronger chemical is not a substitute for allowing a compatible cleaner to work.

These products may have different resistance to chemicals and heat than cement grout. Extended high-temperature steam can damage some ready-to-use formulations, and strong acidic, alkaline, abrasive, ammonia-based or bleach products may harm grout or sealer. Follow the product-specific care sheet before choosing oxygen bleach or steam.

Natural stone and polished finishes
Stone and polished surfaces can show etching or scratches that are not obvious while wet. Keep the cleaner and brush within the approved compatibility range, avoid abrasive pads unless the stone manufacturer allows them, and inspect the test area after it dries. A grout brush should contact the joint without forcing its bristles across a delicate face.
Tinted grout and sealed joints
Color is part of the finish. Chlorine bleach can leach tinted grout, and repeated bleach use may discolor or weaken grout. Some cleaners can also degrade sealer, so a surface that looks clean immediately after treatment may still have lost protection. If the care instructions require resealing after a particular cleaning process, follow that separate instruction rather than improvising a sealer application.

A cloudy film remains after cleaning
The likely first correction is additional clean-water rinsing and drying, not a stronger chemical. Replace dirty rinse water, wipe the area again and allow it to dry before deciding whether soil remains. If the film persists, consult the cleaner and tile manufacturer instructions because a residue may require a specified removal method.
The grout looks lighter or patchy
Stop using the product and compare the affected area with the hidden test. Bleach can leach color from tinted grout, and an aggressive cleaner can alter a sealer or finish. Do not try to even out the color by applying more chemical over the entire installation; obtain product-specific restoration advice.

The surface looks dull or scratched
Discontinue abrasive pads and heavy pressure. A soft finish may have been marked by the tool or by grit trapped between the brush and tile. Document the product, dwell time and tool used, then ask the tile or stone manufacturer whether the appearance can be corrected.
Soil returns as soon as the area dries
Check whether cleaner residue was left behind and whether rinse water was changed often enough. Reclean a small test section with the approved routine, rinse until no residue remains and dry it. If the same discoloration remains in the joint, the issue may require a stain-specific product or professional assessment rather than repeated routine scrubbing.
The grout or sealer appears softened
Stop cleaning, rinse with clean water if the product label directs that response, and let the area dry. Record the cleaner and exposure time. Contact the grout or sealer manufacturer before applying another chemical or attempting steam; additional treatment can increase the damage.

Compare products by compatibility, intended soil, label directions, finish sensitivity and whether they are designed for routine maintenance or stain treatment. A named example is Miracle Sealants Miracle Grout Cleaner, which Rust-Oleum describes as pH-neutral, non-acidic, bleach-free and suitable for several grout types. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent testing, so read the current label and verify compatibility with your particular tile, stone, grout and sealer before use.
If two products appear suitable, prefer the one whose label clearly states the surfaces covered, dilution, dwell time, brush or cloth requirements and rinsing instructions. A product with fewer stated compatible surfaces is not necessarily weaker; it may simply be more specific. Do not infer suitability for polished stone, colored grout or a particular sealer unless the label says so.
A repeatable cleaning checklist
- Identify the grout, tile or stone and sealer.
- Read the current care instructions and cleaner label.
- Test the cleaner and tool in an inconspicuous area; judge after drying.
- Remove loose soil.
- Apply the approved cleaner at label dilution.
- Honor the label dwell time without letting the product dry unexpectedly.
- Scrub joints with a compatible brush and controlled pressure.
- Rinse with clean water, changing it as it becomes contaminated.
- Dry and inspect before treating another section.
- Use oxygen bleach or steam only when the installation instructions permit that escalation.
This sequence keeps the easiest method first while protecting grout color, tile finish and sealer. When the materials are unidentified or the test area shows a change, pause and obtain product-specific guidance instead of escalating to a stronger cleaner.
