A simple MDF-and-hardwood shelf-pin jig makes a cabinet hole row repeatable: drill two guide holes at the spacing you choose, then use a bolt through the second hole to index the jig from the hole just drilled. WOOD Magazine’s 2025 design uses a 4-inch example spacing, but the layout can be changed for the cabinet and shelf hardware.

How the jig keeps shelf-pin holes aligned

The jig has an MDF base with two 1/4-inch guide holes and a grooved hardwood fence attached by a bolt. The fence registers against the cabinet edge. After drilling the first hole, move the jig so the bolt passes through the second guide hole and into that new hole. The bolt locates the next position, preserving the chosen spacing without measuring each hole again.

The dimensions and example below are from WOOD Magazine’s project published April 15, 2025. The magazine’s direction is to “Vary the hole spacing to suit your project.” Read the WOOD Magazine project.

Materials and layout

  • 8 × 4-inch MDF for the base
  • One 8-inch piece of 3/4 × 3/4-inch hardwood scrap for the fence
  • One 1/4 × 1-inch bolt
  • A 1/4-inch brad-point bit and a depth-control method, such as a stop collar or tape flag

Drill two 1/4-inch guide holes in the base along a line 1 3/4 inches from one edge. Set the first hole’s position to establish the setback from the cabinet top; set the distance to the second hole to establish the shelf-pin spacing. In WOOD Magazine’s example, the top setback is 7 inches and the distance between guide holes is 4 inches. Those are example dimensions, not required standards.

Kreg Shelf Pin Jig 1/4 Inch, Cabinet Shelf Drilling Jig, KMA3225
  • 1/4 Inch Shelf Pin Jig: Designed for drilling accurate 1/4 in shelf pin holes for adjustable shelving in cabinets and furniture
  • Consistent Hole Spacing: Precision guide ensures evenly spaced shelf pin holes for professional cabinet layouts
  • Edge-Aligned Design: Registers securely against cabinet edges to maintain straight, repeatable drilling results
  • Portable and Easy to Use: Compact jig supports fast setup and efficient drilling for DIY and professional woodworking
  • Premium Kreg Tools: We offer products that help woodworkers close the gap between idea and outcome

Cut a centered groove 1/4 inch wide and 1/4 inch deep along the 8-inch hardwood fence. Attach the fence to the MDF with the 1/4 × 1-inch bolt through the groove. The groove lets the fence position adjust so it can register against the cabinet edge.

Drill a row with the jig

  1. Set the reference. Place the jig against the cabinet’s inside top edge, with its end flush to that edge, and clamp it in place.
  2. Drill the first hole. Use a 1/4-inch brad-point bit through the first guide hole. Set a stop collar or tape flag to limit depth so the bit does not break through the panel.
  3. Index the next position. Unclamp and move the jig along the same cabinet edge. Put the bolt through the second guide hole and into the hole just drilled; clamp the jig again.
  4. Continue the row. Drill through the first guide hole, then repeat the repositioning and indexing steps until the row is complete.

The bolt-and-hole index maintains the spacing established by the two guide holes. The jig does not correct a changing reference: keep it against the same cabinet edge and face, and clamp it at every position. Kreg’s manual likewise advises clamping the workpiece and stopping when the drill-bit collar contacts the guide. Kreg Shelf Pin Jig owner’s manual (Version 1, November 2016).

Check the layout before drilling both sides

Use a common datum for both cabinet-side rows so the shelves sit level. Before drilling a long run of holes, make the first pair of rows and check that a shelf fits at the intended height. Kreg’s manual recommends using a spacer at the cabinet side to help align corner holes. This check catches a setup or reference error before it is repeated down the cabinet.

Control depth on every hole with a stop collar or tape flag. A brad-point bit helps locate the cut in the guide, while the jig controls position; neither substitutes for clamping and a consistent edge reference.

When a ready-made jig may suit the job better

Commercial jigs differ in hole diameter, spacing, setback, indexing, and the number of holes they guide per setup. Match the jig to the shelf pins and cabinet layout rather than assuming that 5 mm, 1/4-inch, 32 mm, and 1-inch patterns are interchangeable.

Choose the pattern for the cabinet, not the jig alone

  • Hole and pin diameter: Match the drilled holes to the actual pins. The cited commercial options support 5 mm, 1/4 inch, or both, depending on the model.
  • Spacing: The shop-made jig can use a project-specific spacing; the listed Kreg and Milescraft jigs use 32 mm patterns, while Woodhaven’s template uses 1-inch spacing. Choose a pattern that gives the shelf positions you need.
  • Setback and edge registration: Check how the fence references the cabinet and whether its setback fits your panel and hardware. Milescraft lists two fence setbacks; the shop-made fence adjusts in its groove.
  • Setup access: A longer multi-hole template can reduce repositioning. A short jig with an indexing pin or bolt extends a row in stages, which can be useful when working inside an assembled cabinet.
  • Included depth control: Confirm whether a suitable bit and stop are included or must be supplied separately.

These product descriptions establish their features, not a comparative accuracy ranking. Accuracy in use still depends on a stable reference, clamping, and a correctly set first hole.
