Eastern Light Distilling is the bourbon distillery being built in Morehead, Rowan County, Kentucky. The $143.7 million project broke ground on July 2, 2024, and a September 24, 2026 financing update says construction is moving forward, more than $60 million has been secured, and distilling operations are targeted for late 2027.
What is being built
Eastern Light Distilling is planned as a 230-acre bourbon campus near the Morehead-Rowan County Airport. The Commonwealth of Kentucky describes a 50,000-square-foot, full-service distillery, nine barrel-aging rickhouses, a complete bottling facility and a bourbon tourism and visitor experience.

Each rickhouse is expected to average 33,000 barrels of capacity. Taken together, the nine warehouses represent roughly 297,000 barrels of planned storage, although the published figures are averages rather than a guarantee that every warehouse will hold exactly the same amount.
A separate U.S. Department of Agriculture environmental-assessment notice identifies grain handling, distillation systems, a barrel-storage warehouse and fire-suppression infrastructure among the planned facilities. Those components are necessary for receiving and processing grain, making new-make spirit, storing barrels safely during maturation and preparing for industrial fire risks.

Current construction status and schedule
The ceremonial groundbreaking took place July 2, 2024. At that time, contemporaneous reports described a target of roughly 97,000 bourbon and rye barrels per year, with production expected to begin in late 2025 or early 2026.
A September 24, 2026 financing update presents a changed schedule and larger planned capability: more than $60 million in financing has been secured, construction is proceeding, planned capacity is above 125,000 barrels annually, and distilling operations are targeted for late 2027.

It also does not mean bourbon made that year will immediately be ready for sale; bourbon normally requires time in a rickhouse before bottling. No firm date has been announced for tours, the visitor experience or a public grand opening.

Investment, jobs and leadership
Kentucky announced an investment of $143.7 million and at least 50 expected full-time jobs. The project is led by co-founder and chief executive officer Cordell Lawrence and co-founder and master distiller Caleb Kilburn.
The public announcements identify the founders and operating leaders, but they do not provide a complete ownership breakdown. It is therefore more precise to describe Lawrence and Kilburn as the company’s co-founders and leaders than to assign them a particular ownership percentage.
At the groundbreaking, Governor Andy Beshear said, “Eastern Light Distilling is adding to the historic growth we’re seeing all across Kentucky’s signature bourbon industry. Today’s official groundbreaking ceremony marks another significant step forward for our spirits industry as it continues to provide incredible job opportunities for the Eastern Kentucky region.”

Why the distillery may make whiskey for other brands
Eastern Light is designed primarily as a custom contract distiller for independent and craft spirits companies. In this model, a client brand can hire the distillery to perform some or all of the production chain rather than building its own plant.
- Customized production: recipes and production specifications can be tailored to a client’s product.
- Maturation: Eastern Light can hold barrels in its rickhouses while the whiskey develops.
- Bottling: the planned bottling facility is intended to prepare finished whiskey for market.
- Product development and expertise: clients can use the distillery’s technical and distilling knowledge without owning a full-scale campus.
This arrangement explains how one distillery can eventually produce whiskey associated with multiple independent labels. Eastern Light’s own future visitor experience can showcase the production site even when much of the whiskey is being made under contract for client brands.

The state-backed project description includes a bourbon tourism and visitor experience, so tours or public-facing programming are part of the plan. However, the state-backed project description and Eastern Light announcements do not establish an opening date, ticket price, tour schedule or the final design of that visitor area. Those details should be treated as future plans until Eastern Light or local tourism officials publish them.

The campus brings a large industrial bourbon investment to Morehead and is expected to create at least 50 full-time positions. Kilburn framed the local opportunity in terms of career access, saying, “I hope this means the next kid with a dream of getting into the bourbon industry—and maybe also becoming a master distiller one day—won’t have to leave home to find their start.”
For the region, the combination of production, barrel storage, bottling and tourism could support jobs beyond the distillery itself, but the currently published figure is the project’s expectation of at least 50 full-time jobs. No published announcement quantifies additional indirect employment.
Bottom line on the Morehead project
Eastern Light Distilling is the Rowan County bourbon distillery under construction. Its planned campus covers 230 acres and includes a 50,000-square-foot distillery, nine rickhouses, bottling operations and a visitor experience. The project remains under construction as of the September 24, 2026 update, with more than $60 million secured and distilling targeted for late 2027. Capacity figures above 125,000 barrels annually are future plans, not production already taking place.
