Salix herbacea, or dwarf willow, is a woody willow that usually rises only a few centimetres above the ground. Its branching stems spread mainly through underground rhizomes, forming low mats in Arctic and alpine places. “World’s smallest tree” is a popular description, not a precise botanical rank: Kew classifies the species as a subshrub or perennial, while the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) calls it a dwarf shrub.
How small is dwarf willow?
Wild-plant descriptions put its height in the range of just a few centimetres. The Flora of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago gives a height of 0.5–5 cm, while World Flora Online records 0.005–0.05 m. These are botanical descriptions, not measurements of every plant in every habitat.
Garden dimensions can be larger: the RHS plant profile lists a maximum height of up to 10 cm and a spread of 0.1–0.5 m. Those horticultural figures describe the plant’s potential in cultivation, rather than contradicting the narrower wild-plant descriptions.
Why is it called the world’s smallest tree?
Dwarf willow is genuinely woody, but it does not fit a universally agreed botanical category of “smallest tree.” Kew’s Plants of the World Online accepts the name Salix herbacea L. and classifies it as a subshrub or perennial. The RHS uses “dwarf shrub.” The familiar superlative captures its exceptionally low stature, but its growth form is better described with those more precise terms.

- Live Dwarf White Willow cuttings – Start your own willow bonsai or propagation project with live unrooted woody cuttings. Willow is valued by growers for vigorous growth, graceful branching and narrow silvery-green foliage, providing interesting material for pruning, shaping and developing a living tree from an early stage.
- Beautiful silvery-green foliage – Narrow willow leaves feature green upper surfaces with noticeably paler undersides, creating attractive texture and subtle silver tones as the foliage moves and catches the light.
- Bonsai training material – Vigorous young growth gives growers plenty of opportunity for hands-on pruning and shaping. Regular training can be used to develop a compact form while the trunk and branch structure mature over time.
- Live unrooted propagation cuttings – You will receive live woody cuttings rather than rooted plants or finished bonsai. Plant promptly, maintain consistent moisture and provide appropriate growing conditions while new roots and shoots become established.
- Container or outdoor growing – Develop young willow in a container for easier pruning and training or grow outdoors in a suitable location. Provide abundant sunlight and regular moisture for healthy development during the active growing season.
How does dwarf willow grow so close to the ground?
Most of the plant’s branching is underground. Its rhizomes spread horizontally, sending up short shoots that bear leaves and flowers at the surface. World Flora Online describes clonal mats formed by rhizomes; the Canadian Arctic flora likewise notes that most branching occurs underground. This spreading habit explains how a woody willow can cover ground without developing a tall above-ground trunk or canopy.
The plant’s low, mat-forming shape is especially striking in exposed Arctic and alpine settings. The RHS says it tolerates cold and exposed conditions, and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh describes the species in Arctic-alpine environments, where its occurrence is sensitive to temperature and snow cover. These sources document its form and habitat, but do not quantify a particular temperature or wind-buffering benefit of the mat itself.

How to recognize dwarf willow
Look for small, rounded leaves with shallow teeth along the edges, carried on short shoots close to the ground. Botanical descriptions characterize the leaves as circular to broadly elliptic, with crenulate or crenate margins; the RHS describes them as broadly oval to rounded and slightly glossy.
Like other willows, dwarf willow bears its tiny flowers in catkins. Male and female flowers are usually on separate plants. The RHS notes that male flowers turn yellow as their pollen ripens; World Flora Online also records compact male and female catkins.

Where does dwarf willow grow?
Kew gives the native range as subarctic and subalpine Europe and subarctic America. The species occurs in both high-latitude Arctic habitats and mountain environments farther south. That means it can grow near sea level in the high Arctic as well as at elevation in alpine country.
Its settings include alpine turf, screes and rock ledges, as described by the Alpine Garden Society, as well as high-altitude alpine tundra and rocky moorland noted by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. “Arctic plant” does not mean it is confined to the far north; its distribution also reaches mountain habitats.

Can you grow dwarf willow in a garden?
The RHS recommends a sunny position and moist but well-drained soil. It lists rock gardens, wildlife gardens and ground cover among possible uses. Its compact, spreading habit may suit a low-growing planting scheme, provided the site matches those conditions.
The RHS also lists propagation by softwood cuttings in early summer or hardwood cuttings in winter. Its garden profile’s height and spread figures are cultivation guidance, not a guarantee: actual growth depends on conditions.
