Ductless Mini Split

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump Installation Cost: 2026 U.S. Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget about $2,000 to $14,500 for a typical professionally installed ductless mini-split heat-pump project in the United States. HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 guide reports that range and an approximate $3,000 average, while Angi’s April 2026 guide says professional installation commonly costs $2,000 to $5,000 but can reach $14,500. Those figures use different scopes, locations and methods; neither is a quote for your home. A multi-zone example from Angi totals $4,150 to $17,900 after adding a $3,200–$14,500 system, $250–$400 permit and $700–$3,000 labor.

What a ductless mini-split heat pump is

The system combines an outdoor heat-pump unit with one or more indoor air handlers (“heads”). Refrigerant piping and control wiring connect the assemblies through the wall or ceiling, so no forced-air ductwork is required. The U.S. Department of Energy describes these as ductless air-source split systems; a one-to-one mini-split has one indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit, while a multi-split serves several indoor zones from one outdoor unit. See the DOE consumer guidance and DOE product lookup for system terminology.

Because every head, line set, wall penetration, electrical connection and outdoor-unit location is part of the installation, “equipment price” and “installed project price” are not interchangeable. A web listing for a condenser and two heads may exclude permits, refrigerant work, circuit installation, mounting hardware, commissioning and labor.

2026 installed-cost ranges to use for planning

Published scope Reported figure How to interpret it
HomeAdvisor guide, updated June 19, 2026 $2,000–$14,500 normal project range; approximately $3,000 average; broad installation range $700–$14,500 Planning reference covering varied layouts, capacities, zone counts and local conditions; not a national guaranteed price.
Angi guide, updated April 4, 2026 $2,000–$5,000 commonly reported professional installation; low/high figures $700 and $14,500 General range with a different mix of jobs and labor assumptions.
Angi multi-zone worked example $4,150–$17,900 total Includes a $3,200–$14,500 system, $250–$400 permit and $700–$3,000 labor.
Angi example with optional old-AC removal $4,230–$18,050 total Same example after adding the stated removal allowance.

The spread is not an error to average away. A single-head retrofit with a short line run can sit near the low end, whereas several heads, difficult access, electrical upgrades and extensive line routing can push a project toward the high end. The cost-guide figures are commercial estimates rather than a government survey or controlled national installation study.

Why two homes receive very different quotes

Zone count and indoor-head type

Each indoor unit serves a zone. Adding bedrooms, a finished basement or an open living area increases equipment, line-set connections, mounting and testing. Wall-mounted heads are usually simpler to access than recessed ceiling cassettes or concealed units. Ask whether the proposal is one-to-one or multi-zone and list every indoor unit by room and model.

Heating and cooling load, not floor area alone

BTU capacity should follow a room-by-room load calculation. Square footage is only a starting point; window area and orientation, insulation, ceiling height, air leakage, doors, floor count and internal gains all affect the result. An oversized unit may cycle poorly and cost more, while an undersized unit can struggle in design weather. Require the contractor to document the load method and selected capacity instead of choosing a model from a square-foot rule of thumb.

Outdoor-unit location and line routing

A condenser beside the service panel with a short, accessible line set takes less time than a unit on a roof, wall bracket or distant pad. Long runs may require additional refrigerant piping, protection, supports and condensate planning. Wall, attic and ceiling access can involve patching or finish work. Put the proposed route and maximum line length in writing.

Electrical capacity and code work

Many systems need a dedicated circuit. A new breaker, disconnect, conduit, service upgrade or panel work can be a separate electrical contract. Local codes may require permits and inspections. Angi’s multi-zone example assigns $250–$400 to a permit, but your jurisdiction may charge more or use a different fee schedule. A complete quote should identify who obtains the permit, performs electrical work and schedules inspection.

Efficiency, cold-climate capability and features

Higher efficiency, low-ambient heating performance, Wi-Fi controls, enhanced filtration and specialized head designs can raise the equipment price. For a cold climate, verify the manufacturer’s rated capacity and operating range at your local design temperature rather than relying on a marketing label. Compare the exact model numbers and certification data; a brand table alone does not prove better quality or lower lifetime cost.

Existing equipment and site conditions

Removing an old air conditioner or heater, repairing deteriorated wiring, relocating furniture, restoring drywall and correcting drainage can add line items. Local labor rates, access rules, weather exposure and code requirements also change bids. HomeAdvisor specifically identifies layout, zone count, efficiency, electrical upgrades, old-system removal, condenser placement and annual maintenance as cost influences.

Labor, permits and equipment: keep the scopes separate

Angi discusses professional labor of $300–$1,500 in its general cost discussion, while its multi-zone worked table uses $700–$3,000. Those numbers describe different job scopes, so neither should be treated as a universal labor rate. Confirm whether labor includes mounting, line-set evacuation, refrigerant connections, condensate drainage, electrical work, startup measurements and cleanup.

Equipment-only pricing is useful for comparing models, but it is not an installed total. A contractor may decline owner-supplied equipment, or charge separately to verify compatibility, correct a missing component or handle warranty registration. Before buying anything, confirm that the indoor heads, outdoor unit, controls, line-set diameter, branch box and refrigerant requirements match.

How to get a quote you can actually compare

  1. Describe the rooms and comfort problem. Provide a floor plan, ceiling heights, insulation information, window locations, existing-system details and the temperatures you need in each zone.
  2. Request a documented load calculation. Ask for room-by-room heating and cooling loads, selected BTU capacity and cold-weather performance where heating is important.
  3. Specify the complete system. List the number and type of indoor heads, outdoor model, controls, line-set lengths, condensate method, pad or brackets and disconnect.
  4. Require an itemized site-work section. It should show electrical circuits, panel changes, wall or ceiling access, finish repairs, crane or lift needs and old-equipment removal.
  5. Verify permits and commissioning. The bid should state permit responsibility, inspection, pressure testing, evacuation, refrigerant charge verification, startup readings and homeowner instruction.
  6. Compare warranties and exclusions. Separate manufacturer parts coverage from labor coverage and identify who handles a warranty call. Note exclusions such as painting, drywall, masonry, condensate pumps or service upgrades.
  7. Confirm schedule and payment terms. A written scope, model numbers, allowances and change-order process prevent an equipment-only price from becoming an open-ended installation bill.

Checklist for comparing two or more proposals

  • Same number, capacity and type of indoor units.
  • Same outdoor-unit capacity and low-temperature heating specification.
  • Included line-set lengths, covers, insulation, supports and penetration sealing.
  • Electrical circuit, disconnect, pad or wall bracket and surge protection responsibilities.
  • Permit, inspection and code-compliance costs.
  • Old-equipment removal, disposal and surface repairs.
  • Condensate pumps, drains and freeze protection where required.
  • Startup, commissioning measurements and operating tutorial.
  • Parts and labor warranty terms, maintenance requirements and exclusions.

If one bid says “install customer-supplied system” and another includes design, equipment, electrical work and commissioning, their totals cannot be compared until the scopes are aligned.

Incentives and the 2026 federal tax-credit boundary

Do not subtract the former federal 25C energy-efficient home improvement credit from a project placed in service in 2026. The IRS Instructions for Form 5695 (2025) state that the credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. For qualifying 2025 property, the instructions describe a 30% credit and a combined $2,000 cap for heat pumps and specified related property; those rules belong to the 2025 tax year and should not be carried forward.

ENERGY STAR’s tax-credit page also says the purchase and installation window ended December 31, 2025. Its general ductless product page retains older language mentioning 2032, so use the current IRS instructions and tax-specific official guidance for the federal date. State, utility and local programs can have different technologies, income rules, efficiency thresholds and deadlines. Check the program for your address and installation date before treating an incentive as part of your budget.

Energy performance: useful context, not a bill guarantee

ENERGY STAR reports that certified mini-splits use up to 60% less energy than standard electric radiators. It also reports that whole-house certified installations avoid more than 4,500 pounds of greenhouse-gas emissions on average over their lifetimes compared with standard systems. These are comparisons for the stated reference systems, not a promise about your utility bill or emissions. Results depend on climate, set points, insulation, electricity rates, equipment sizing and how much of the home the system serves.

Installation sequence and homeowner checks

A professional project normally moves from design to commissioning rather than simply hanging a head on the wall.

  1. Site assessment: the installer confirms loads, head locations, line routes, drainage, service-panel capacity and condenser clearances.
  2. Permitting and ordering: model numbers, electrical requirements and local approvals are finalized before equipment arrives.
  3. Mounting and connections: indoor units, outdoor equipment, refrigerant lines, controls, condensate piping and electrical components are installed.
  4. Pressure test and evacuation: the refrigerant circuit is tested for leaks and evacuated with professional instruments before charging or opening valves.
  5. Startup and balancing: the installer verifies operating pressures, temperatures, airflow, controls, defrost behavior and drainage, then records commissioning data.
  6. Handover: you receive operating instructions, filter-cleaning guidance, warranty documents and the inspection result where applicable.

Before final payment, confirm that every zone heats and cools, condensate drains safely, line penetrations are sealed, outdoor supports are secure and the controls match the written scope. Keep model numbers, invoices, permits and commissioning records for future service and any incentive application.

Common budgeting mistakes

  • Using one online average as a promise: published ranges combine different regions and scopes.
  • Choosing by square footage alone: load, envelope and room layout determine capacity.
  • Ignoring electrical work: a dedicated circuit or panel change can be substantial.
  • Comparing head counts but not head types: a ceiling cassette and a wall head do not require identical labor.
  • Forgetting access and finish repairs: attic, masonry, roof or long line runs add time and materials.
  • Counting an expired federal credit: a 2026 installation cannot use the 2025 25C rules.
  • Buying a mismatched system: indoor and outdoor units, controls and refrigerant specifications must be compatible.

Bottom line for a 2026 budget

Use $2,000–$14,500 as a broad planning range for a professionally installed ductless mini-split heat-pump project, with roughly $3,000 as HomeAdvisor’s reported approximate average and $2,000–$5,000 as Angi’s commonly reported professional range. Expect a multi-zone project with permits and labor to land in a wider $4,150–$17,900 example range, before any optional removal allowance. The only reliable number for your home is an itemized, load-based proposal that states equipment, electrical work, permits, routing, commissioning, warranties and exclusions.
