Dry Seal is a pressure-equalized rainscreen cladding system for vertical Omega-Lite panels. It is designed to drain incidental water and ventilate the cavity behind the panels; it is not the building’s primary water barrier. The assembly therefore depends on a properly designed drainage plane, continuous air and water barrier, flashings, weeps, and ventilation openings behind and around the cladding.

The available Laminators Inc. Dry Seal Installation Guide is effective September 2015. Use it for system orientation, but obtain the latest approved listings, CAD details, technical bulletins, project specifications, applicable code information, and design-professional details before work starts. The guide warns that failing to follow those requirements can void the warranty.

What the Dry Seal system is—and is not

Dry Seal is an architectural panel-cladding installation system for Omega-Lite panels. Its pressure-equalized rainscreen design creates a drained and ventilated space so incidental water can escape and the assembly can dry. The cladding is the outer layer of a wall system, not the wall’s primary defense against bulk water.

“The panel system is NOT intended to function as a barrier or primary water control.”

— Laminators Inc., Dry Seal Installation Guide, effective September 2015

The primary water-control layer must be established behind the panels. The design professional must define the drainage plane, air and water barrier, flashings, transitions, and interfaces with adjacent construction. Sealants, caulks, adhesives, and air-and-water-barrier products also need to be checked for compatibility with the panel system.

Dry Seal in this article means the architectural cladding system. It should not be confused with NPTF, also called Dryseal, pipe threads. NPTF is a tapered pipe-thread standard with a separate assembly procedure and different sealing behavior.

Where Dry Seal can be used

Intended application

The guide describes Dry Seal for vertical wall cladding over a compatible exterior-grade substrate. It is a limited-use wall system, not a primary structural wall panel. The supporting wall, sheathing, air-and-water barrier, framing, and attachments must already be designed to carry applicable loads.

Uses the guide does not permit

  • Do not install the panels over open framing where the required substrate is absent.
  • Do not use the system on top-side horizontal surfaces such as copings, roofing returns, or cornices.
  • Do not treat the panels as the primary structural wall or primary water-control layer.

Soffits and transitions

Bottom-side horizontal soffit applications may be permitted when the Dry Seal details specifically address them. Soffit panels and fascia-to-soffit transitions have special fabrication and ventilation requirements; do not extrapolate ordinary vertical-wall details to these locations. The design professional must establish how the soffit cavity connects to the wall drainage and ventilation strategy.

Documents and design decisions to confirm before ordering material

The 2015 guide identifies approved product listings, CAD details, and technical bulletins as part of the installation documentation. Because those documents can change, the project team should obtain current versions directly from the manufacturer and reconcile them with the construction documents.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
  1. Confirm the current system documents. Check that the panel, extrusion, fastener, sealant, adhesive, and accessory listings match the project’s current specification and the intended Omega-Lite finish.
  2. Confirm the water-control design. The design professional should identify the drainage plane, air and water barrier, base-wall flashings, opening flashings, roof and parapet interfaces, weeps, and ventilation openings.
  3. Confirm compatibility. Verify that caulk, sealants, adhesives, and air-and-water-barrier materials are approved for contact with the panel system and adjacent materials.
  4. Confirm wind-load attachment. Fastener type, size, spacing, stiffener layout, and adhesive layout must be checked against the project’s design wind loads. Do not substitute a generic spacing pattern.
  5. Confirm substrate suitability. The substrate must be sound, clean, dry, and within the specified flatness tolerance. Unsatisfactory conditions must be reported to the general contractor and/or design professional and corrected before installation.

Substrate requirements and flatness checks

Standard substrate

The guide identifies 5/8-inch exterior-grade plywood sheathing with an air and water barrier as the standard substrate. The sheathing must be securely attached, free of contamination that could interfere with the barrier or attachments, and ready to receive the system’s detailing.

Alternative substrates

CMU, concrete, brick masonry, continuous insulation, and exterior-grade gypsum sheathing may be possible alternatives, but each requires special consideration and manufacturer consultation. Their fastener capacity, surface condition, dimensional stability, joint treatment, and interface with the air-and-water barrier are not interchangeable with plywood sheathing.

Substrate condition Dry Seal treatment What must be verified
5/8-inch exterior-grade plywood sheathing Standard substrate identified by the guide Air-and-water-barrier continuity, sound attachment, cleanliness, dryness, and flatness
CMU, concrete, or brick masonry Possible with special considerations Manufacturer consultation, anchorage, joints, moisture condition, and barrier transitions
Continuous insulation Possible with special considerations System-approved attachment strategy, compressive capacity, joint treatment, and wind-load design
Exterior-grade gypsum sheathing Possible with special considerations Approved fastening, surface integrity, moisture condition, and barrier compatibility
Open framing or an unapproved surface Not permitted as the described substrate Provide a compatible exterior-grade substrate and obtain design approval before proceeding

Published flatness limit

For the standard substrate, the guide gives a maximum out-of-plane tolerance of the smaller of 1/4 inch in any 20-foot vertical or horizontal length, or 1/2 inch in any building-elevation direction. This is a manufacturer-guide specification, not a universal code allowance. Measure the actual wall, record deviations, and stop work if the condition falls outside the limit.

  • Check long vertical and horizontal lines with a straightedge, laser, or equivalent survey method.
  • Identify abrupt ridges, depressions, loose sheathing, damaged edges, and areas that could prevent extrusions or panels from seating correctly.
  • Document the location and magnitude of out-of-tolerance areas.
  • Notify the general contractor and/or design professional; do not shim, plane, or otherwise alter the substrate without an approved corrective detail.

Drainage, flashing, and ventilation details

A rainscreen only works when water has a path out and air can move through the cavity. The Dry Seal guide places responsibility for project-specific water controls with the design professional. The installer should review the details before panels are fabricated because flashings and vents often determine panel dimensions and return legs.

Required water-control elements

  • An established drainage plane behind the cladding.
  • A continuous air and water barrier tied into adjoining wall, roof, and opening conditions.
  • Base-wall flashings and weeps that discharge water to the exterior.
  • Flashings at roof and parapet copings, wall openings, and other changes in plane.
  • Compatible sealant and transition details at penetrations, joints, and dissimilar materials.

Minimum venting locations identified by the guide

  • Roof and parapet coping interfaces.
  • Heads and sills of wall openings.
  • Grade interfaces and the base of the wall.
  • Soffit panels.
  • Fascia-to-soffit transitions.

These locations are a minimum framework, not a substitute for project calculations and details. Keep ventilation openings clear of sealant, debris, insulation, and insects screens that have not been approved for the assembly. Confirm that vents align with the drainage cavity and that flashings do not trap water behind the panels.

Tools, materials, and fabrication controls

Required and recommended tools

  • Laminators RB 1/2 router bit: the guide requires this custom bit for fabricating panels for the Dry Seal system. A generic router bit should not be presented as an equivalent replacement.
  • Panel saw: use a sharp carbide-tipped circular or table saw blade with at least 40 teeth for panel cutting.
  • Glazing suction cups: recommended where possible for lifting and positioning panels without sliding them across the substrate.
  • Clean work gloves: use them when handling panels to reduce fingerprints, contamination, and scratches.
  • Layout and inspection tools: use accurate measuring, squaring, and flatness-checking tools appropriate to the approved shop and field details.

The 40-tooth carbide-tipped blade recommendation applies to cutting Omega-Lite panels. It does not replace the proprietary RB 1/2 router bit used to form the system’s returns.

Panel-pan fabrication

Panels are fabricated into pans with folded edges, either on site or in a shop. The preparation instructions call for leaving 1 inch of extra material on each side for the return legs before routing and folding. Because a return that is short, over-cut, or out of square can affect engagement with Dry Seal extrusions, establish a repeatable cutting and routing setup and inspect the first pan before producing the batch.

First-time fabricators are directed to contact Laminators for information about training and fabrication services. For complex elevations, shop fabrication can reduce field routing, but the shop drawings still need to show the approved joints, returns, stiffeners, fasteners, sealants, and ventilation paths.

Soffit and fascia-to-soffit fabrication

Do not use the ordinary wall-pan sequence for soffits without checking the special details. The guide identifies separate fabrication and ventilation requirements for soffit panels and fascia-to-soffit transitions. Confirm support, panel orientation, open-area venting, and water discharge before cutting material.

Installation sequence

The exact joint, extrusion, fastener, and sealant arrangement must come from the current project details. The following sequence organizes the controls that must be completed; it does not authorize a field change to the manufacturer’s details.

  1. Release the substrate. Verify that the wall is complete, dry, clean, sound, and within the published flatness tolerance. Obtain written direction for any correction or deviation.
  2. Install and inspect the air-and-water-barrier work. Confirm continuity at corners, penetrations, openings, roof interfaces, and the base of the wall before covering it with cladding.
  3. Install base flashings, weeps, and transition flashings. Ensure water can drain to the exterior and that openings remain clear.
  4. Lay out the system. Establish panel module lines, joint locations, opening returns, soffit transitions, and vent locations from the approved drawings. Coordinate with control joints and movement joints in the substrate.
  5. Verify fasteners and stiffeners. Use only the specified type, size, spacing, stiffener arrangement, and adhesive layout required for the project’s wind loads.
  6. Fabricate test pans. Cut and route sample panels using the RB 1/2 bit, leaving the required 1-inch allowance for return legs. Check dimensions, squareness, finish orientation, and fit against the approved detail before batch fabrication.
  7. Prepare the panels for handling. Keep the protective masking on the panel field. Lift panels with clean gloves and glazing suction cups where possible; do not drag them across the substrate or one another.
  8. Install panels and extrusions. Follow the current Dry Seal detail for engagement, joints, fasteners, adhesives, sealants, stiffeners, and corner conditions. Maintain the specified cavity and keep drainage and ventilation paths open.
  9. Detail openings and interfaces. Complete head, sill, jamb, roof, parapet, base, soffit, and fascia-to-soffit conditions exactly as drawn. Check that each flashing laps and discharges correctly.
  10. Inspect before closing work. Look for damaged finishes, blocked weeps, missing fasteners, incomplete sealant, inadequate returns, loose extrusions, and masking trapped in joints.
  11. Remove masking on schedule. Remove all panel masking within two weeks after installation, as stated in the September 2015 guide. Do not leave masking exposed to weather beyond that period.

Panel handling, storage, and protection

Handling in the work area

Keep the protective masking on the panel field during installation, but do not allow it to remain indefinitely. Lift panels instead of sliding them to prevent scratches. Clean gloves and suction cups help protect the finish and reduce the chance of dropping a large pan. Keep cut edges and returns protected from impact during movement through the site.

Storage requirements

  • Store panels horizontally.
  • Keep them dry and protected from weather, dirt, and site traffic.
  • Do not place loads or sharp objects on the finished panel face.
  • Keep storage temperature at or below 120°F, the maximum stated in the September 2015 guide.
  • Maintain enough support to prevent bending or distortion while panels wait for installation.

If panels become wet, contaminated, warped, or damaged in storage, isolate them and obtain direction before installation. Do not assume a damaged return or scratched finish will be hidden by an extrusion.

Common failure modes and corrective actions

Symptom Likely control that failed Action before continuing
Water appears behind the cladding Missing or discontinuous air-and-water barrier, flashing, weep, or vent path Stop covering work, trace the drainage path with the design professional, and repair the primary water-control layer and flashing detail
Panels do not sit flat Substrate outside tolerance, distorted pan, or incorrect stiffener/fastener layout Measure the wall and pan, verify the approved fabrication dimensions, and correct the substrate or panel before forcing the assembly into place
Joints or returns do not align Incorrect module layout, insufficient return allowance, or shop-to-field dimension mismatch Compare the pan to approved drawings and the test-pan record; obtain a revised detail rather than trimming ad hoc
Scratched or marked panel faces Panels were dragged, handled without protection, or stored improperly Separate damaged pieces, document them, and obtain replacement or repair instructions before removing masking
Blocked ventilation Sealant, debris, insulation, or an unapproved screen closing a vent opening Clear the opening and verify that the vent connects to the intended cavity and exterior discharge
Fastener pull-out or movement Wrong fastener, spacing, substrate, or unverified wind-load design Stop installation and have the design professional confirm the attachment schedule and substrate capacity

Do not conceal a nonconforming condition simply because the panel face looks acceptable. The rainscreen depends on concealed drainage, ventilation, and attachment details that cannot be evaluated after the work is closed.

Quality-control checklist for handover

  • Current manufacturer documents and approved project details are in the installer’s possession.
  • Substrate type, moisture condition, cleanliness, soundness, and flatness have been recorded.
  • Air-and-water-barrier continuity is documented at corners, openings, penetrations, roof interfaces, and the base.
  • Base flashings, weeps, opening flashings, coping interfaces, and soffit vents are installed and unobstructed.
  • Fastener type, size, spacing, stiffeners, and adhesive layout match the wind-load design.
  • RB 1/2 routing and the 1-inch return-leg allowance were used for fabricated pans.
  • Panels were cut with the specified sharp, carbide-tipped blade and handled without sliding.
  • Storage never exceeded 120°F and panels remained horizontal, dry, and protected.
  • Masking is removed within two weeks, and the finish is inspected after removal.
  • Photographs, inspection records, product data, and approved changes are included in the project closeout file.

Dry Seal cladding versus NPTF “Dryseal” pipe threads

The same phrase is used in two unrelated construction contexts. Searching for “dry seal installation” can therefore produce pipe-thread instructions that do not apply to Omega-Lite panels.

Characteristic Architectural Dry Seal NPTF/Dryseal pipe thread
Product Omega-Lite panel cladding, extrusions, flashings, and a drained cavity Tapered American Standard pipe threads and fittings
Purpose Pressure-equalized rainscreen for vertical wall cladding Threaded pipe connection intended to have self-sealing characteristics
Primary control Drainage plane, air-and-water barrier, flashings, weeps, and ventilation Thread condition, materials, engagement, tightening, and sealant practice
Installation reference Current Dry Seal and Omega-Lite manufacturer details plus project drawings Fitting manufacturer’s engagement or turns-from-finger-tight instructions
Important warning Not a primary water barrier or structural wall panel Parker notes that self-sealing is highly improbable in practice under varying conditions; sealant is required in applicable assemblies, and excess PTFE tape can distort or crack a port

For NPTF connections, Parker’s procedure calls for thread inspection, sealant or lubricant where not pre-applied, finger-tight assembly, and wrench tightening to the specified turns-from-finger-tight value. General NPT plug guidance likewise says to inspect threads, use an appropriate sealant, tighten finger tight, then follow the fitting manufacturer’s engagement instructions. Those procedures have no bearing on Dry Seal panel fabrication or rainscreen installation.

How to use the 2015 guide responsibly

The Laminators guide is a 16-page document effective September 2015. Its measurements—such as the substrate tolerance, two-week masking-removal period, and 120°F storage ceiling—are installation specifications from that edition. They should not be generalized into current code requirements or assumed to override a newer manufacturer bulletin, approved listing, project specification, or authority having jurisdiction.

Before mobilization, the contractor, installer, architect, envelope consultant, and general contractor should agree on which current documents govern. Resolve conflicts in writing. If a condition is outside the guide or the approved drawings, stop and obtain a project-specific direction. That process protects the warranty, preserves the intended drainage and ventilation paths, and prevents an apparently minor field adjustment from changing the wall’s water-control behavior.
