Ordinary plug-in sonic and ultrasonic devices are not a dependable way to control mice. University extension guidance says residential devices have not been shown effective in scientific studies, and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension describes ultrasound devices as almost completely useless against rodent pests. Rather than ranking five plug-ins as proven solutions, this guide explains what the evidence supports and how to address mice with exclusion, sanitation, and traps.
What the evidence says about plug-in mouse repellents
The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s guide, published with minor revisions on November 5, 2025, says sound and flashing lights have almost no effect on repelling rats and mice, ultrasound devices are almost completely useless against rodent pests, and commercial products labeled as repellents are generally ineffective. The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension’s peer-reviewed handout, revised in October 2015, says commercially available sonic pest devices for residential use have not been shown effective in scientific studies and advises against relying on them for common pest problems. These sources address the residential sonic-device category, not every model currently for sale. The reviewed guidance does not establish a current, model-by-model comparison or a market-wide success rate. Product packaging claims should not be treated as independent proof that a device will clear mice from a home.

What older studies can—and cannot—tell you
A 1995 chapter by Stephen A. Schumake of the USDA Denver Wildlife Research Center summarized controlled protocols involving six commercial ultrasonic devices. It reported a 30–50% reduction in movement activity in those bounded tests and no significant repellency effects beyond 3 to 7 days of exposure in the summarized protocols. These historical findings are not ratings of products sold today and do not establish how any particular current plug-in will perform. Read the 1995 chapter.
Regulatory concerns about unsupported efficacy claims also have a history. An Iowa State Extension article from August 24, 2001, reproduced an FTC Division of Enforcement warning that claims for ultrasonic pest-control devices should be supported by scientific evidence. It recounted FTC actions and complaints from 1985–1997, including reports of temporary rodent reactions and habituation. This is historical context, not a new enforcement action. What to do instead of buying a plug-in
For mice already inside, a practical plan combines removing easy food and hiding places, closing entry points, and trapping. A repellent does not remove an existing mouse, seal its route into the building, or deal with food and nesting opportunities.
1. Remove food and reduce hiding places
- Keep garbage covered.
- Remove uneaten pet food rather than leaving it available overnight.
- Reduce clutter and other hiding places where practical.
These sanitation and housekeeping steps are recommended by UGA as part of rodent control, rather than as a stand-alone guarantee.

2. Close openings mice can use
Mice can enter through openings as small as a dime. UGA calls closing entry holes one of the most effective ways to prevent mice and rats from becoming pests in a home. For small holes, its guide recommends stuffing them with steel wool and covering the material with caulk. It also describes quarter-inch-square hardware wire as a barrier to keep rodents outside. Choose the approach to suit the opening and location; these materials are not interchangeable fixes for every gap. See UGA’s exclusion guidance.
3. Trap mice that are already present
UGA recommends snap traps, placed along walls and where mouse activity is visible. Position a trap so its bait treadle crosses the rodent’s path at a right angle to the wall. Suggested baits include peanut butter, bacon, cooked chicken, or another strong-smelling food; cheese is unnecessary.

Place traps close to signs of activity: UGA cautions that a mouse may not travel more than 5 or 10 feet to find one. The guide recommends using plenty of traps and leaving them in place for weeks. Those are practical recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular trap will catch a mouse. Check and manage traps regularly and keep them out of reach of children and pets.

Household safety and when to get help
UGA recommends traps rather than poison baits inside houses because of risks to children and pets and because poisoned rodents may die in inaccessible places. If pesticides are used, follow all directions on the product label and keep them away from children and pets. Do not rely on a plug-in device as a safety substitute for controlling access to food, sealing openings, or keeping traps and pesticides out of reach.
