Top 5 Greenhouse Sensors: A Practical Monitoring Guide

A practical guide to choosing greenhouse sensors by measurement need, from core temperature and humidity monitoring to CO₂, light, moisture, and commercial control systems.

The best greenhouse sensor setup depends on what you grow, how you irrigate, and whether you need readings alone or automatic climate control. Most growers start with temperature and relative humidity; add CO₂ when crop and operating conditions make it useful, then consider light and root-zone moisture for more crop-specific decisions. These five sensor categories are a selection framework—not a tested product ranking.

What sensors do you need in a greenhouse?

Indoor monitoring commonly covers temperature, relative humidity, and CO₂. Outdoor inputs can include wind speed and direction, rain, and solar radiation. DENSO’s commercial greenhouse system also lists soil moisture among its indoor measurements. Depending on the crop, substrate, and irrigation method, a dedicated root-zone moisture probe or a more specific light measurement may be useful.

Greenhouse conditions vary across the growing space and change over time. A single sensor reading may not represent every plant or zone. Placement and data processing affect what a reading means; the greenhouse measurement guideline’s search-result excerpt gives canopy-level humidity or VPD near the center of the growing area as an example and recommends continuous or at least hourly measurement. Consult the linked paper for its full methodology before applying more detailed placement rules.

Five greenhouse sensor categories to consider

1. Temperature sensor

Temperature is a foundational indoor measurement. Check the specified range and accuracy against the conditions you expect, and consider whether the sensor can be placed where it reflects the plants’ environment rather than direct sun, a heater, or a ventilation outlet.

  • Upgraded Display: This room humidity gauge is easy to read due with a 3-inch bright LCD screen with large numbers. The max/min temp humidity records and the comfort indicators (dry/comfort/wet) will keep you aware of the indoor humidity at any time.
  • Smart App Alerts: You'll receive an instant alert once the temperature or humidity is out of its preset range. Know the status of your bedroom, baby room, wine cellar, basement, plant nursery or other areas, even when you're not beside the device.
  • Free Data Storage: Make plans according to historic temp and humidity data. The 20-day curve graphs provide a clear data-changing track. You can export data from the past 2 years and convert it to a CSV format. Stay on track of your daily routine.

2. Relative-humidity sensor

Humidity readings help characterize the greenhouse air and can support humidity or VPD monitoring. Location and exposure matter: a sensor near the canopy may report different conditions from one near a wall or roof. Confirm any shielding, condensation protection, and placement guidance in the product documentation.

3. CO₂ sensor

A CO₂ sensor can support crop-specific decisions, especially in systems that manage enrichment or ventilation. Vaisala notes that optimum CO₂ conditions depend on the plant and light conditions: when light decreases, photosynthesis and CO₂ consumption fall, and excess CO₂ can increase costs and harm the crop. There is no universal target established here, and adding CO₂ is not automatically beneficial.

  • Multiple Usages: Take this thermometer and hygrometer home to monitor the temperature of your bedroom, baby room, musical instrument room, cigar room, etc and more

4. Light sensor

Light measurement can add useful context for crop monitoring and CO₂ decisions. Check what the device actually measures and whether its output is calibrated for the intended use. A lux reading is not automatically interchangeable with every crop-relevant measure of light.

5. Root-zone moisture sensor

Root-zone moisture monitoring is most relevant when the crop, substrate, and irrigation approach make a direct moisture reading useful. Verify that the probe suits the growing medium and intended placement; do not assume a general-purpose moisture specification transfers equally to every substrate.

How to compare greenhouse sensors

  • Parameters: Confirm which variables the device measures and whether additional probes are needed.
  • Range and accuracy: Compare the manufacturer’s stated range and accuracy with expected conditions. A wide range alone does not show that a sensor is suitable.
  • Placement and exposure: Check required height, location, shielding, and protection from condensation or direct radiation.
  • Logging and alerts: Distinguish live readings from stored history, notifications, and actions triggered by a controller.
  • Compatibility: Verify the required controller, gateway, software, wiring, interfaces, and power. An integrated sensor is not necessarily universal.
  • Scale and purpose: A classroom terrarium sensor, hobby greenhouse monitor, and commercial sensor network serve different requirements.

Documented sensor and system examples

The examples below illustrate different scales and integration approaches. They are not an independently tested ranking. Specifications and compatibility are manufacturer-reported; check the linked product information for current details.

Example What it measures or provides Important fit considerations
PASCO PS-3322 Greenhouse Sensor Temperature, humidity, visible light intensity, and soil moisture. PASCO lists ambient temperature accuracy of ±0.5°C, humidity accuracy of ±3%, and soil-moisture accuracy of ±5%. Its light range is approximately 600–50,000 lx and is described as not calibrated. Designed for the PASCO Greenhouse Sense and Control Kit and contained spaces such as terrariums. It has no logging and includes a two-meter soil-moisture probe cable. These are current product-page specifications accessed in 2026, not independent performance results. PASCO product page.
VIVOSUN CO₂, Temperature, Humidity & Light Sensor Temperature range −10°C to 60°C; humidity range 0–95%; CO₂ range 0–40,000 ppm, according to the manufacturer. The manufacturer’s support page lists compatibility with the GrowHub E42A+ controller, recommends hanging the sensor about 10 cm above the canopy, and describes monthly outdoor calibration near ambient CO₂ conditions. Its crop-stage reference values should not be treated as universal targets. VIVOSUN support page.
MAXMAC R4 integrated sensor Light, CO₂, temperature, and humidity; optional UART/RS485/LIN communication and IP54 protection are described by the manufacturer. Confirm the exact configuration, measurement principle, calibration, controller compatibility, and supply terms before purchase. MAXMAC product information.
DENSO Climate Control System for Greenhouse Indoor and outdoor sensor inputs and control of equipment including ventilation, curtains, heating, circulation fans, fogging, and irrigation. Its page describes recording once per minute with ten-year data retention, fail-safe behavior after sensor malfunction, and alerts. DENSO marks the information as of April 2021 and says specifications may change; verify current specifications and regional availability. DENSO system page.
Vaisala professional instruments Professional greenhouse monitoring options for CO₂, humidity, and temperature, including a CO₂ probe, transmitters, and data logger. Compare controller and integration requirements with the existing setup. Vaisala greenhouse monitoring.

Where should greenhouse sensors go?

Place sensors so that their readings correspond to the conditions you intend to monitor, and follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance. Avoid assuming one location describes the entire greenhouse: temperature, humidity, light, and moisture can vary by position and time. The greenhouse measurement guideline excerpt highlights canopy-level humidity or VPD near the center of the growing area as a placement example, with continuous or at least hourly measurement. The excerpt does not establish a universal layout for every greenhouse.

When do you need a CO₂ sensor?

Consider CO₂ monitoring when it informs a crop-specific operating decision or integrates with a climate-control system. The useful interpretation depends on crop and light conditions, and excess CO₂ can waste money or harm the crop. A sensor may therefore be valuable for observing and managing conditions without implying that every greenhouse should enrich CO₂ or use the same target.

From monitoring to automatic control

A sensor provides measurements; it does not necessarily control equipment. Hobby or educational devices may simply display readings, while commercial systems can connect sensor inputs to ventilation, heating, shading, circulation, fogging, and irrigation. Before choosing a system, determine whether you need a display, historical records, alerts, or automated actions, then verify which controller and equipment the sensor can actually operate.
