A battery’s presence alone does not mean your home will stay powered. The result depends on the inverter and backup equipment, which circuits the system serves, your electricity use, and whether solar can operate while the grid is down.
What has to be in place for a battery to provide backup?
A battery can supply your home during an outage only when the overall installation can operate independently of the grid. That usually means a compatible inverter and equipment that isolates the home from utility power. The exact components and configuration vary by system.
This isolation matters for safety: conventional grid-tied solar is generally designed to shut off when the utility grid fails. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that panels alone are not enough for resilience; a properly configured inverter and storage system are needed for solar to produce power independently (DOE, Solar and Resilience Basics).
Will rooftop solar work during an outage without a battery?
Usually not. A conventional grid-connected residential solar system generally shuts off when the grid goes down, even if sunlight is available. The system must be specifically configured to operate in islanded mode—separately from the utility grid—to keep supplying electricity during the outage. Solar paired with compatible storage and backup equipment can do this; rooftop panels by themselves do not establish that capability (DOE, Solar and Resilience Basics; DOE, The Road to Resilience with Rooftop Solar).

Will a battery power the whole house?
It may, but whole-home backup is not automatic. A system can be designed to support the entire home within its capacity, or to back up selected circuits and appliances while leaving other loads off. The right design depends on both the system’s capabilities and the home’s electrical demands.
Potential loads range from lights and small appliances to air conditioners, well pumps, dryers, water heaters, and EV charging. Large or simultaneous loads can exceed what a given system can supply. Ask which specific circuits will be backed up and whether the system can handle the appliances you expect to use together (Tesla, What Can Powerwall Back Up).

- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
How long will backup power last?
There is no dependable single runtime for every home. Duration depends on how much energy is stored, the number of batteries, the amount and timing of household electricity use, and which loads are connected to backup. Solar production during the outage may also affect how long power remains available. Tesla likewise identifies system size and energy use as factors in Powerwall duration (Tesla, What Can Powerwall Back Up).
To get a useful estimate for your home, ask an installer to assess your actual loads and explain the assumptions behind the estimate. Reducing nonessential electricity use can help stretch available stored energy, but it does not turn a system into a guaranteed multi-day supply.

Can solar recharge the battery during a long outage?
Yes, if the solar-plus-storage system is configured to operate while isolated from the grid. In suitable conditions, solar can serve active household loads and recharge storage when sunlight is available; the battery can then supply power later, including at night. The amount available depends on the solar system, weather, battery state, configuration, and household demand. The U.S. Department of Energy describes solar and associated storage as a way to keep delivering power through long outages (DOE, Solar and Resilience Basics; DOE, The Road to Resilience with Rooftop Solar).
Does the system switch on automatically?
That depends on the system and its backup equipment. For example, Tesla says its Backup Gateway or Backup Switch detects grid outages and enables Powerwall backup. Do not assume another manufacturer’s battery installation works the same way; confirm the outage transition and required equipment for the system being considered (Tesla, Powerwall System Design; Tesla, Powerwall Installation Documents).

Does a home battery need internet during an outage?
For Tesla Powerwall, Tesla says the system continues operating in its last set mode and providing backup without internet, but remote app monitoring is unavailable. This is specific to Tesla’s documentation; check the manufacturer’s instructions for other systems (Tesla, Internet Connectivity).
