DJI’s First Robot Vacuum Brings Drone-Style Autonomy—But Trust Is the Problem

DJI’s ROMO brings LiDAR, binocular vision and premium vacuum-and-mop hardware to the home. But its reported 2026 cloud authorization flaw makes privacy, support and reliability more important than its 25,000 Pa headline.

DJI’s ROMO is not a cleaning drone in the literal sense. It is a premium floor-cleaning robot vacuum and mop that uses binocular vision, wide-angle solid-state LiDAR and autonomy technology DJI says is derived from its drone work. The hardware is ambitious, with advertised suction of up to 25,000 Pa, extendable cleaning arms on higher-end models and a self-cleaning dock.

But a reported 2026 backend authorization flaw exposed information associated with thousands of ROMO devices, including camera, microphone and mapping data. DJI says it fixed the issue and found no evidence of misuse. That does not prove the patched product is currently unsafe, but it does make trust—not suction or navigation—the central question for anyone considering a camera-equipped appliance inside the home.

What DJI actually launched

DJI’s first robot vacuum product family is called ROMO. It is a ground-based vacuum-and-mop system, not an airborne drone and not a robot intended for construction-site cleanup. DJI’s drone experience appears in the sensing and autonomy stack rather than in the machine’s physical form.

  • ROMO S: the standard model.
  • ROMO A: a higher-tier model with a transparent robot and base configuration.
  • ROMO P: the premium model, with additional deodorizing functionality.

DJI’s Canadian store displayed prices of USD $1,089 for the ROMO S, $1,309 for the ROMO A and $1,339 for the ROMO P when the supplied research was gathered. Those are regional store prices, not confirmed universal U.S. prices. Before buying, check local checkout eligibility, taxes, warranty coverage, shipping, replacement parts and app-region support on the official ROMO listing.

Regional listings in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia do not by themselves establish normal official U.S. availability. A marketplace import is not equivalent to local retail support: warranty, power compatibility, firmware behavior, consumables and returns may all differ.

What “drone technology” contributes

DJI says ROMO uses high-performance binocular fisheye vision sensors, wide-angle solid-state LiDAR and navigation technology derived from its flagship drones. The company also claims millimeter-level obstacle sensing. These systems can help a robot perceive its surroundings, build a map, localize itself and plan movement around objects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is useful technology, but “drone-derived” should not be confused with “drone-level autonomy.” A flying drone generally navigates through relatively open three-dimensional space. A vacuum must make reliable decisions at floor level, where it encounters cables, socks, toys, pet waste, fringe rugs, dark surfaces, transparent furniture, wet spills, thresholds and objects partly hidden beneath chairs.

The meaningful test is therefore not whether DJI can navigate autonomously. It is whether ROMO’s perception and motion-planning systems perform better than mature robot-vacuum competitors in an untidy home. A good map does not automatically mean reliable object avoidance, jam-free rollers or successful docking.

ROMO’s cleaning hardware: impressive claims, limited conclusions

DJI advertises up to 25,000 Pa of suction, dual anti-tangle roller brushes and extendable robotic arms for edge and corner coverage on relevant models. Its base station is designed to wash the mop system, manage clean and dirty water and support a claimed maintenance-free interval of up to 200 days. DJI also advertises high-pressure washboard cleaning, tailored cleaning-solution dispensing and three-stage sound suppression, including up to 80% noise filtering during dust collection.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance scores. Pa figures are not standardized consumer cleaning benchmarks and cannot establish that ROMO will pick up more dirt than a competitor with a lower advertised number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A serious comparison should measure:

  • Fine dust and large debris on hard floors.
  • Carpet pickup, including pet hair and long human hair.
  • Edge and corner coverage.
  • Mopping of dried stains.
  • Carpet-mop lifting or avoidance.
  • Threshold crossing and recovery from uneven transitions.
  • Noise during cleaning, dust emptying, washing and drying.
  • Dock footprint and water handling.
  • How often rollers, filters, sensors, trays and brushes require manual attention.

The available evidence supports calling ROMO unusually ambitious, not declaring it the best cleaner. Higher suction and a sophisticated dock may reduce some routine work, but they do not remove the need to clear hazards or maintain the machine.

Can you leave ROMO running unattended?

Only conditionally. “Autonomous” means the robot can navigate and perform a scheduled task without someone steering it. It does not mean it can safely handle every floor, object or household situation without preparation.

Before the first run

  • Remove charging cables, shoelaces, straps, socks and small toys.
  • Keep pet food and water bowls clear of the robot’s route.
  • Do not expect it to safely deal with pet waste or wet spills.
  • Secure fringe rugs and inspect high thresholds.
  • Keep the dock level, accessible and within the robot’s navigation area.
  • Check stairs, drop-offs and areas where the robot could become trapped.
  • Confirm that rooms and no-go zones are mapped correctly.

Transparent furniture, reflective surfaces, black objects, narrow gaps and chair legs can challenge any vision-based system. Hair can still wrap around rollers and side brushes. Dirt or obstruction on sensors can degrade navigation. A household with open floors and limited clutter is a much easier environment than one with toys, cables, pets and frequent layout changes.

What happens when autonomy fails?

DJI’s own support documentation shows that cleaning can pause in several ordinary failure states. If ROMO believes it is in a designated no-go zone, DJI instructs the user to move it out and press the robot’s start button. System errors may require rebuilding the map or restarting the task; motor errors can require inspection or support intervention.

See DJI’s guidance for no-go-zone errors, system errors and vacuum motor errors. The practical conclusion is straightforward: ROMO may complete routine jobs unattended, but owners should expect occasional recovery and periodic maintenance.

Software behavior is also version-dependent. DJI’s April 2026 release notes describe updated voice control that lets the robot leave the base station, along with changes intended to reduce cleaning time and water consumption. Anyone comparing reviews should record the ROMO firmware and DJI Home app versions because later updates may change navigation, controls and cleaning behavior.

The 2026 security incident

The most serious concern is digital rather than mechanical.

In early 2026, a backend authorization problem in DJI Home infrastructure reportedly allowed a researcher working with his own ROMO to access information associated with approximately 6,700 to 7,000 other vacuums. Independent reports described potential access involving live video, microphone audio, floor plans or home maps, device messages and related metadata.

(roborock was the first in the robot vacuum industry to mass-produce a product featuring a liftable chassis system with three-wheel control, officially launching this technology in Q3 2024.)

DJI says it discovered the issue during an internal review in late January. The company says the problem affected ROMO and some DJI power stations, that it deployed remediation, that no user action was required and that its investigation found no evidence of user-data misuse. DJI also says two independent researchers later reported the same vulnerability through its bug-bounty program. Its account is detailed in the company’s security and continuous-improvement statement.

Independent reporting from Hardware Busters and TechRadar Pro provides the reported scale and types of information involved.

The careful conclusion is not that DJI spied on thousands of homes, that every ROMO camera was hacked or that the flaw remains active. The evidence supports a narrower and more important point: a backend access-control failure reportedly allowed unauthorized access to data belonging to many other devices. DJI says it patched the issue and found no evidence of misuse, but that statement does not erase the significance of the original design failure or independently prove that every long-term security risk has disappeared.

Three kinds of trust

ROMO buyers should separate three questions that are often collapsed into one:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Physical trust: Will it avoid cables, toys, furniture, stairs, spills and pet hazards?
  2. Operational trust: Will it complete a cleaning job, return to its dock and recover from ordinary interruptions?
  3. Digital trust: Can you reasonably trust the app, cloud service, camera, microphone and home-map handling?

DJI may have substantial expertise in perception and motion planning, but competence in autonomous flight does not automatically establish competence in cloud authorization for a camera-equipped household appliance.

What data does ROMO require?

Before purchase, verify ROMO-specific documentation rather than assuming DJI’s drone privacy controls apply. Important questions include:

  • Does the robot contain a camera and microphone, and are both enabled by default?
  • Are maps stored locally, synchronized to DJI servers or both?
  • Can camera and microphone functions be disabled independently?
  • Is a DJI account or internet connection required for setup and core cleaning?
  • Will scheduled cleaning and local controls work during an internet outage?
  • What data can be deleted, and how long is it retained?
  • How are firmware updates delivered?
  • Does live camera access require additional confirmation?

DJI’s Trust Center and consumer privacy materials describe controls for DJI products, particularly drones. They should not be treated as proof that equivalent Local Data Mode or privacy controls exist on ROMO. Buyers need ROMO-specific permissions, terms, retention policies and settings.

Total ownership cost matters

The purchase price is only the beginning for a $1,000-plus connected appliance. Check the continuing cost and availability of dust bags, filters, mop pads, rollers, side brushes, dock components and cleaning solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One reported concern is that ROMO uses proprietary-shaped cleaning-solution bottles rather than a universally refillable solution tank. DJI recommends official ROMO solution for performance and corrosion prevention. Before substituting another liquid, check the current instructions and warranty terms; a cheaper third-party solution may not be approved.

Also confirm whether the base can operate without detergent, whether vacuum-only cleaning is possible, how often consumables must be replaced and whether parts are available in your country. A premium robot with uncertain consumable supply can become expensive or unusable even if its hardware is excellent.

Who should buy ROMO?

Buy only if

  • It is officially sold and supported in your region.
  • You value advanced sensing, edge cleaning and novelty over proven maturity.
  • Your home has relatively open floors and manageable thresholds.
  • You accept a cloud-connected appliance with cameras, microphones and home maps.
  • Local replacement parts, cleaning solution and warranty service are confirmed.
  • You are willing to pre-clear clutter despite the autonomous marketing.

Wait if

  • Privacy and security are your primary concerns.
  • You need mature firmware, broad integrations and long-term support.
  • Official availability or warranty coverage is unclear.
  • You expect reliable operation around pet waste, dense clutter or difficult carpets.
  • Independent performance testing is limited in your market.

Choose an established competitor if

  • Reliability and local service matter more than first-generation innovation.
  • You want extensive independent benchmarks and a mature app.
  • You need predictable parts and consumables.
  • You prefer established premium lines from Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs, Narwal or iRobot.

Those competitors still require privacy scrutiny—especially models with cameras and microphones—but their maturity, regional support and accessory availability may matter more than ROMO’s headline specifications. Compare obstacle avoidance, carpet cleaning, mopping, app reliability, smart-home integrations, warranty and data controls rather than suction numbers alone.

Verdict

DJI has built a promising and unusually ambitious first robot vacuum. Its binocular vision, LiDAR, edge-cleaning hardware and advanced dock could make ROMO a strong option for early adopters. But the available evidence does not yet justify treating it as a proven autonomous cleaner, and the reported 2026 backend authorization failure materially weakens confidence in its connected-home architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most buyers, the sensible recommendation is to wait or buy only through an official regional channel with clear warranty, returns, parts and privacy documentation. Choose ROMO now only if its sensing and design advantages matter more to you than first-generation software and security risk. For everyone else, an established robot-vacuum platform is likely the safer purchase—not because ROMO is proven permanently unsafe, but because a premium home robot must earn trust in the cloud as well as on the floor.
